Reynolds Arno GIMBER European Romantic Prose: A Book Review Article of Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages The International Comparative Literature Association / Association Internationale de Littérature Comparée launched the series Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages / Histoire comparée des littératures de langues européennes (CHLEL/HCLLE) in 1967, an ambitious and unprecedented project that over the years has earned respect and recognition among scholars world wide (for volumes published see the Works Cited). The five volumes on Romanticism, like other groups of volumes in the series, contribute a dense and extensive web of connections and parallels, unusually multidimensional. Editors Gerald Gillespie, Manfred Engel, and Bernard Dieterle avoid defining Romanticism itself and treat it, instead, as a phenomenon whose meaning continues to resonate in a transnational perspective, crossing "linguistic, cultural, and geopolitical boundaries" ("Introduction" xx). They show how Romanticism developed and spread in its principal European homelands and the New World, revealing also the ways in which the contribution of the Romantic period lead to a redefinition of Modernism. Volumes on the Romantic period in CHLEL/HCLLE began in 1988 with Romantic Irony , edited by Frederick Garber. Romantic Prose Fiction , edited by Gillespie, Engel, and Dieterle, is the last part of the sub- series, which involves a total of five volumes: Romantic Irony (Garber), Romantic Drama (Gillespie), Romantic Poetry (Esterhammer), Non-fictional Romantic Prose: Expanding Borders (Sondrup and Nemoianu), and Romantic Prose Fiction . In the review at hand I focus on Romantic Prose Fiction in particular, a volume that addresses basic Romantic themes and story types — the romance, novel, novella, short story, etc. — and considers the Romantic impact not just in Europe, but across the Atlantic and in the light of its influence on later generations. While it is possible to write a history of literature in national categories without a single non-German reference — as Rüdiger Safranski did in 2007 in Romantik. Eine deutsche Affäre — the Romantic period marks a wide network of connections and supranational influences which extend towards the beginning of European modernity and that have been neglected for too long. Without this premise, the Romantic era cannot be understood within the context of single national literatures. Contributors to Romantic Prose Fiction discuss the impact of Romanticism not just in literary history and theory, but also across disciplines including philosophy, cultural studies, gender studies, the other arts, the social sciences, etc. Since the twentieth century, one of the most important issues in Western literary scholarship has been the question of the heterogeneity of the Romantic movement that occurred more or less at the same time in various ways across Europe and not just in specific national literatures. In "The Concept of Romanticism in Literary history" René Wellek approached this issue and concluded that Romanticism could be contemplated as an artistic period, since it appeared with identical or at least similar characteristics throughout Europe and across the Atlantic. Romanticism is commonly seen as the beginning of modernity, and it is, of course, obvious its importance in Great Britain, France, and Germany with regards to the avant-garde position of these cultures in Western Art. In this sense, Romantic Prose Fiction does not go beyond Wellek's approach and remains within Eurocentrism. It does, however, focus on Romanticism in a comprehensive manner including new readings from cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives all of which add value. The view beyond national borders is the other strong point of the CHLEL/HCLLE Romanticism volumes, although it might also imply some dangers. For example, if we accept that Romantic literature might stretch from 1760 to 1890 — i.e., from the publication in 1760 of The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole, to Herman Melville's Billy Budd Sailor , almost a 130 years later — and thus the time-span is so wide that is no longer operative. (Aristotle according to Dante)2 ABSTRACT: In the Penderecki oeuvre, symphonic music has been pivotal, with eight symphonies written over the span of forty years, including Symphony No. 6, which remains in the sketch stage. As he admits, the sequence of symphonies constitutes a sort of musical autobiography. In the life and work of Penderecki his interests in nature and culture have long run parallel, and in both spheres the moment of creation has been particularly signifi­ cant. Penderecki’s artistic work has clearly focused on two domains: composing music and moulding the nature which surrounds his Luslawice house - the space of the gar­ den and park. The latter type of art concerns nature not in its primeval form, but rather in the shape imposed on it by man. Over the last decade, the composer’s two passions have tended to drift closer to­ gether and intertwine. During this time, he has written his Eighth Symphony (‘Lieder der Vergänglichkeit’), devoted to trees, and Three Chinese Songs, permeated by his enchantment with the beauty of nature. In his Eighth Symphony, Penderecki employs poetic and musical images to show the beauty and diversity of the forms of the surrounding world of nature, in which it is given to man to live the successive phases of his life.

    The Philhellenic Horizon: Homeric Prolegomena to the Greek War of Independence Constanze Güthenke Based on what Armstrong and Dué, in the invitation to this conference, have termed the Wolfian paradigm of Homeric research and its intersection with the preoccupations of the Romantic period (ballads; nature; language; nation; nostalgia; modernity), this paper examines the role of Homer within the horizon of European Philhellenism (in the sense of a partisan position favorable towards Modern Greece), as much as the impetus of this Philhellenism on approaches to Homer. I will first focus on the case of Wilhelm Müller, who achieved prominence in his own time mainly for his several volumes of Griechenlieder, written in support of the Greek War of Independence. In a second part, I want to speculate about the fate of Homeric knowledge and its use in post-independence Greece, whose writers were very highly aware of the Homeric features of the Western philhellenic endeavor. The overarching research framework behind this paper is the triangle between antiquity, the modern West and modern Greece, and its resulting tensions. The representation of modern Greece by way of a nature discourse is one example; the position of Greece vis-à-vis Europe, trying to reformulate conceptually the refractions and (mis-)representations arising from mutual perception, is another. This is also a question of comparativism, which is currently strongly exercising the Humanities again. Comparative literature is discussing again the notion of “world literature” and its imbalanced axes (see, e.g., Prendergast 2004), while history and the social sciences are continuously looking for new concepts of exchange and interplay as a heuristic method.

    Eger Journal of English Studies VIII (2008) 13–21 Notes on the Sublime Experience in Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea Kamila Vrankova The notion of endless space reflected in the title of Jean Rhys’s novel includes the possibility of hidden meanings as well as the intense feeling of the unknown and the inexpressible, which permeates through the whole story and becomes an important source of the sublime 1. This feeling, in fact, arises from the paradox inherent in Charlotte Brontë´s novel Jane Eyre (1847): one of its most important characters is given only a marginal and scant attention. It is Rochester´s first wife Bertha who enables the author to develop the plot, evoke a mysterious atmosphere and create an “objective correlative” for the main heroine´s anxiety of otherness. Nevertheless, the characterization of this disquieting figure is reduced to the unconvincing description of an evil inhuman monster. The incongruity between the intensity of the suggested mystery and the incompleteness of explanation (“…she came of a mad family; – idiots and maniacs through three generations!”, Brontë 270) has resulted in innumerative discussions of this figure in literary criticism (e.g. Richard Chase, Elaine Showalter, Judith Weissman, Peter Grudin, S.M.Gilbert and Susan Gubar, Thelma J. Shinn, Adrienne Rich, Barbara Hill Rigney, Sylvie Maurel etc) and has inspired a strong echo in creative literature (Jean Rhys). Both the critics and Jean Rhys have striven to find a more satisfactory interpretation of the questions arising from the tension between Brontë’s schematic image of a madwoman, the 1 Contemporary concepts of the sublime follow the ideas of Longinus (the experience of transcendence as an effort to express and to share intense feelings) as well as of Edmund Burke, in particular, his analysis developed in The Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and the Beautiful (1756).
