................................................................................................... 79 II Chapter I General 1.1 Project Background Qiandongnan Prefecture is located in southeastern Guizhou Province. Densely covered by mountains, it is very suitable for plant growth with a warm and humid climate and good soil conditions. Having long been known as “a mountinuous suitable land for forest”, it is a major collective forest area in south China with eight of the ten key forestry counties in Guizhou Province. Located at the upper reaches of the two water systems of the Yangtze River and the Pearl River, Qian Southease Prefecture has the Qingshui River and Douliu River which are important tributaries in the upstream of the two water systems, so that its forest ecological situation is directly related to the downstream ecological security and the forest here is an important ecological barrier. Previous Qiandongnan Prefecture party committees and governments have attached great importance to forestry development and made arrangements and deployments for the vigorous forestry development at the level of safeguarding the national ecological security and promoting the economic and social development across the Prefecture. Since 1980s, remarkable results have been achieved in forest cultivation and protection with funds raised through afforestation project loans and major forest projects. Qiandongnan Prefecture has a land of 3,033,710.0 hectares, including 1,910,327.2 hectares of forest, with a forest coverage of 62.97% and forest stock of 119.243 million square meters, both being the best historical level since the founding of new China. However, due to historical, natural and socio-economic conditions, problems such as the not high forest resource quality, low forest productivity, single structure of tree species, fragile ecology in some areas, lack of funds for forest resource cultivation, and low proportion of forestry of forestry farmers’ income still exist currently in the ecological construction of the Prefecture. How to properly handle the relationship between the protection, use and cultivation of forest resources and to promote coordinated economic and social development across the Prefecture is a new major issue facing the Prefecture’s ecological construction now. Since 2008, Guizhou Province has been listed as a national advance demonstration area of ecological cultivation and the Prefecture has been listed as national demonstration area of ecological compensation, and the Prefecture party committee and government has actively accelerated the construction of the three systems of “a complete forest ecological system, a developed forestry industry system and a prosperous eco-cultural system” based on the Prefecture’s conditions. In 2012, to support the economic and social development in Guizhou, the Central Party Committee and the State Council issued the Several Opinions on Further Promoting Sound and Rapid Economic and Social Development in Guizhou (Guo Fa (2012) No. 2) (hereinafter referred to as “Guo Fa No. 2” document) which clearly proposed the strategic position of an important ecological security barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and Pearl River for Guizhou. The morphology and ontogeny of the trilobite Changaspis elongata based on 216 specimens collected from the Lazizhai section of the Balang Formation (Stage 4, Series 2 of the Cambrian) in Guizhou Province, South China are described. The relatively continuous ontogenetic series reveals morphological changes, and shows that the species has seventeen thoracic segments in the holaspid period, instead of the sixteen as previously suggested. The development of the pygid- ial segments shows that their number gradually decreases during ontogeny. A new dataset of well-preserved specimens offers a unique opportunity to investigate developmental traits after segment addition is completed. The ontogenetic size progressions for the lengths of cephalon and trunk show overall compliance with Dyar’s rule. As a result of different average growth rates for the lengths of cephalon, trunk and pygidium, the length of the thorax relative to the body shows a gradually increasing trend; however, the cephalon and pygidium follow the opposite trend. Morphometric analysis across fourteen post-embryonic stages reveals growth gradients with increasing values for each thoracic segment from anterior to posterior. The reconstruction of the development traits shows visualization of the changes in relative growth and segmentation for the different body parts.

In June 1992, more than 150 countries including China had jointly signed the "Pact of Biological Diversity". Domestic animal genetic resources are an important component of biological diversity, precious resources formed through long-term evolution, and also the closest and most direct part of relation with human beings. Therefore, in order to realize a sustainable, stable and high-efficient animal production, it is of great significance to meet even higher demand for animal and poultry product varieties and quality by human society, strengthen conservation, and effective, rational and sustainable utilization of animal and poultry genetic resources. On the basis of a field survey, this paper makes an investigation as to whether Dong Ka Lau will continue to manifest Dong minority people’s aesthetic consciousness and pursuits amid today’s rapidly developing local tourism eco- nomy. In addition, the influence on contemporary young people is also of great concern. The study found that commercial performance of Dong Ka Lau heritage in some Dong villages has lost its original cultural significance, while in other villages it has been a vital and inspirational tourism product, of which forms and cultural essence can still exist over a prolonged period of time. This research asserts that cultural ecological self-sustainability and identity can be strengthened and nourished by both external regulations on cultural displays as well as the endogenous power of ethnic minority villages.     ‘If You Don’t Sing, Friends Will Say You are Proud’: How and Why Kam People Learn to Sing Kam Big Song * Catherine Ingram The 2.5 million Kam people, known in Chinese as dong zu 侗族 (the character zu, meaning ‘group,’ is appended to the names of all Chinese ethnic groups), are a southern Chinese people designated by the majority Han Chinese as one of China’s fifty-five so-called ‘minorities’.1 Most Kam people live in small towns and villages in the mountainous region of southwestern China that constitutes the borders of Guizhou, Guangxi and Hunan provinces (see Figures 1a and 1b). Life in these villages is based around subsistence agriculture, and many of the tall mountain slopes—as well as the valleys—are covered with terraced rice fields. The research presented in this article was undertaken mostly in Sheeam (in Chinese, Sanlong 三龙), a Kam region about 35 kilometres south-southwest of the centre of Liping county (黎平县) in southeastern Guizhou Province, and one of the most important areas where Kam ‘big song’ is still sung. Jai Lao, one of the two large villages in Sheeam, was my home and fieldwork base from December 2004 to March 2006 and from February to July 2008.2 The residents of Sheeam speak a version * I was privileged to be invited to participate in, research and record Kam music-making, and would like to thank once again the many Kam people who generously shared their knowledge of Kam culture and their remarkable singing traditions. Here, a geographic information system was used to analyze digital elevation model data and to define the extent of mountainous land and types of mountain areas in Guizhou province. Exploratory spatial data analysis was used to study the spatial coupling relation between the type of mountain area and land use degree in Guizhou province at the county level. The results were as follows: (1) Guizhou province has a high proportion of mountainous land, with a ratio of mountainous land to non-mountainous land of 88:11. The county-level administrative units in Guizhou province were exclusively mountainous, consisting of eight semi mountainous counties, nine quasi mountainous counties, 35 apparently mountainous counties, 13 type I completely mountainous counties, and 23 type II completely mountainous counties; (2) The land use degree at the county level in Guizhou province have remarkable spatial differentiation characteristics.
