Ectoparasites of Pine Voles, Microtus pinetorum, from Clark County, Illinois D. David Pascal, Jr. and John O. Whitaker, Jr. Department of Life Sciences Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana 47809 Introduction In studies on pine voles, only Hamilton (1938) and Benton (1955), both working in New York, attempted to collect and identify external parasites. Hamilton noted the mite, Laelaps kochi Oudemans, 1936 and lice of the genus Hoplopleura to be par- ticularly numerous. Benton reported Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burmeister, 1839) and Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 191 1) as the most abundant pine vole ectoparasites. Ferris (1921) reported H. acanthopus from pine voles in New York and Iowa. Another louse, Polyplax spinulosa (Burmeister, 1839), was found to infest pine voles in Georgia (Morlan, 1952), although Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus are the true hosts for this louse (Pratt and Karp, 1953; Wilson, 1961). The occurrence on pine voles was accidental. Mite records (other than chiggers) on Microtus pinetorum have been summarized by Whitaker and Wilson (1974), but include LAELAPIDAE: Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 1911), Laelaps kochi Oudemans, 1936, Haemogamasus longitarsus (Banks, 1910), H. liponyssoides Ewing, 1925, H. ambulans (Thorell, 1872), Laelaps alaskensis Grant, 1947, and Eulaelaps stabularis (Koch, 1836); GLYCYPHAGIDAE: Glycyphagus hypudaei (Koch, 1841) and Orycteroxenus soricis (Oudemans, 1915) LISTROPHORIDAE: Listrophorus pitymys Fain and Hyland, 1972; MYOBIIDAE Radfordia ensifera (Poppe, 1896) and R. lemnina (Koch, 1841); CHEYLETIDAE Eucheyletia bishoppi Baker, 1949. In addition, Smiley and Whitaker (1979) reported the following pygmephorid mites from Microtus pinetorum from Indiana: Pygmephorus equitrichosus Mahunka, 1975, P. hastatus Mahunka, 1973, P. scalopi Mahunka, 1973 and P. whitakeri Mahunka, 1973. -

Belozerov St. Petersburg State University, Biological Research Institute, Stary Peterhof, 198504, RUSSIA, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: The paper presents a review of available data on some aspects of calyptostasy, i.e. the alternation of active (normal) and calyptostasic (regressive) stages that is characteristic of the life cycles in the parasitengone mites. There are two different, non- synonymous approaches to ontogenetic and ecological peculiarities of calyptostasy in the evaluation of this phenomenon and its significance for the development and life histories of Parasitengona. The majority of acarologists suggests the analogy between the alternating calyptostasy in Acari and the metamorphic development in holometabolous insects, and considers the calyptostase as a pupa-like stage. This is controversial with the opposite view emphasizing the differences between calyptostases and pupae in regard to peculiarities of moulting events at these stages. However both approaches imply the similar, all-level organismal reorganization at them. The same twofold approach concerns the ecological importance of calyptostasy, i.e. its organizing role in the parasitengone life cycles. The main (parasitological) approach is based on an affirmation of optimizing role of calyptostasy through acceleration of development for synchronization of hatching periods in the parasitic parasitengone larvae and their hosts, while the opposite (ecophysiological) approach considers the calyptostasy as an adaptation to climate seasonality itself through retaining the ability for developmental arrests at special calyptostasic stages evoked from normal active stages as a result of the life cycle oligomerization. -

In pristine natural springs with permanent flow, water mites are nearly always present and usually display high diversity. This study aimed to determine whether significant differences in water mite assemblages between rheocrene (river-forming springs with dominant riffle habitats) and limnocrene (lake-forming springs with dominant pool habitats) karst springs could be detected in terms of species richness, diversity and abundance, but also in different ratios of specific synecological groups: crenobiont (exclusively found in springs), crenophilous (associated with springs) and stygophilous (associated with groundwater) water mite taxa. Our research was carried out on four limnocrenes and four rheocrenes in the Dinaric karst region of Croatia. Seasonal samples (20 sub-samples per sampling) were taken at each spring with a 200-µm net, taking into consideration all microhabitat types with coverage of at least 5%. -

Food and Ectoparasites of Shrews of South Central Indiana with Emphasis on Sorex fumeus and Sorex hoyi John O. Whitaker, Jr. and Wynn W. Cudmore' Department of Life Sciences Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana 47809 Introduction Although information on shrews of Indiana was summarized by Mumford and Whitaker (1982), the pygmy shrew, Sorex hoyi, and smoky shrew, Sorex fumeus, were not discovered in Harrison County in southern Indiana (Caldwell, Smith & Whitaker, 1982) until the former work was in press. Cudmore and Whitaker (1984) used pitfall trapping to determine the distributions of these two species in the state. The two had similar ranges, occurring from Perry, Harrison and Clark counties along the Ohio River north to Monroe, Brown and Bartholomew counties (5. hoyi ranging into extreme SE Owen County). This is essentially the unglaciated "hill country" of south central In- diana where S. fumeus and S. hoyi occur on wooded slopes whereas S. longirostris in- habits bottomland woods (Whitaker & Cudmore, in preparation). Information on food and ectoparasites of Blarina brevicauda, S. cinereus and S. longirostris from Indiana was summarized by Mumford and Whitaker (1982), and more data on the latter two species were presented by French (1982, 1984). Additional infor- mation on ectoparasites of these species, other than for Sorex longirostris, was reported from New Brunswick, Canada, by Whitaker and French (1982). The purpose of this paper is to present information on the food and ectoparasites of shrews of south central Indiana. Materials and Methods Pitfall traps (1000 ml plastic beakers) were used to collect shrews. The traps were sunk under or alongside logs in woods so that their rims were at ground level. -

There is relatively little information on ectoparasites of the long-tailed shrew, Sorex dispar, and the rock vole, Microtus chrotorrhinus (Whitaker and Wilson 1974).
