On Conservation and Development: The Role of Traditional Mud Brick Firms in Southern Yemen* Deepa Mehta Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation** Columbia University in the City of New York New York, NY 10027, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT A study of small and medium enterprises that make up the highly specialized mud brick construction industry in southern Yemen reveals how the practice has been sustained through closely-linked regional production chains and strong firm inter-relationships. Yemen, as it struggles to grow as a nation, has the potential to gain from examining the contribution that these institutions make to an ancient building practice that still continues to provide jobs and train new skilled workers. The impact of these firms can be bolstered through formal recognition and capacity development. UNESCO, ICOMOS, and other conservation agencies active in the region provide a model that emphasizes architectural conservation as well as the concurrent development of the existing socioeconomic linkages. The primary challenge is that mud brick construction is considered obsolete, but evidence shows that the underlying institutions are resilient and sustainable, and can potentially provide positive regional policy implications. 2014 -15 YEMEN HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE PLAN 2015 Revision Photo: WFP/Barry Came February 2015 Prepared on behalf of the Yemen Humanitarian Country Team PERIOD SUMMARY Jan 2015 – Dec 2015 This document revises the 2014-15 Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan (YHRP) in order to reflect changes in need identified in the 2015 Yemen 100% Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO) and changes in the operational context. According to the HNO, 15.9 million people – 8 per cent more than 25.9 million last year – currently require some kind of humanitarian assistance in total population Yemen. Humanitarian partners attribute this increase mainly to a rise in localized conflict, improved data collection and deteriorating socio- 61% of total population economic conditions. In 2015, partners aim to assist 8.2 million people – 8 per cent more than last year – with a range of life-saving, protection and 15.9 million resilience-building programmes. MSF internal investigation of the 15 August attack on Abs hospital Yemen Summary of findings 27 September 2016 About the investigation This document summarises the findings from the internal investigation of the attack on the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)-supported Abs rural hospital in the Hajjah governorate in Yemen. A more detailed report will be released shortly. The objective of the investigation is to ascertain the facts surrounding the attack on the hospital and to establish whether the safety and security of staff and operations can be assured on the ground in Yemen. The investigation was carried out by an MSF humanitarian affairs adviser based at the organisation’s headquarters (HQ) in Barcelona, with critical support from past and present MSF staff involved in the Yemen operations at HQ and field level. For the purpose of this internal review, 35 interviews were conducted with key MSF staff from the Yemen mission and the Abs hospital project, including direct eyewitnesses of the attack, and with patients who were at the hospital at the time of the airstrike. Additionally, relevant internal and external documentation, Yemen context analyses and photographic material were reviewed. Introduction On Monday 15 August at 3.40pm local time, the Abs rural hospital in Hajjah governorate in northwestern Yemen was hit by an airstrike killing 19 people, including one MSF staff member, and injuring 24 others. At the time of the attack, there were 23 patients in surgery, 25 in the maternity ward, 12 in paediatrics and 13 newborns at Abs hospital. The airstrike constituted the fifth and deadliest attack on an MSF-supported medical service in Yemen in the past year, amidst countless attacks on other health facilities and services all over the country. -

YEMEN Food Security Outlook Update April 2020 Reductions to humanitarian assistance and rising food prices expected to worsen food insecurity KEY MESSAGES • Despite the announcement of a unilateral ceasefire by Saudi Projected food security outcomes, April to May 2020 Arabia, high levels of conflict continue to disrupt livelihoods and restrict access to income in Yemen, with prices of food and non-food commodities substantially higher than pre-conflict levels. Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes are widespread, with a growing number of people – increasing within the range of 17 to 19 million – expected to be in urgent need of humanitarian assistance through September. The severity of acute food insecurity within the population already facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse outcomes is expected to increase, with some households across Yemen expected to deteriorate to Emergency (IPC Phase 4) and Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5). • Persistent conflict and deteriorating macroeconomic conditions – as well as some COVID-19 related disruptions – are resulting in further food price increases and restricted income-earning opportunities. Archaeology, architecture and technology are highly essential sciences to preserve this heritage as they help to study the history of mankind. These sciences constitute the main pillar of protecting this heritage through validating it rather than copying or replacing its specificities. The people of Yemen have witnessed one of the oldest civilisations known to humankind in the Middle East. -
