The Palace Cultural Arts Association First Citizens National Bank and Marion OB/GYN Dr. David & Jude Foulk Proudly Present FRI, MAY 3, 2019 MARION OB/GYN DR. DAVID & JUDE FOULK ince 2016, brothers Zachary and Dylan Zmed, along with their partner and drummer Burleigh Drummond, have celebrated the pivotal music and history of The Everly Brothers legacy with enthusiastic crowds all across the US and over seas in prestigious venues. SAbout the show’s material, Dylan shares, “The music of the 50’s and 60’s are nostalgic for us. Our parents raised us on it, and we feel that the Everly’s contribution is greatly overlooked, especially by younger generations. Our aim is not to impersonate but to do our best in honoring the aesthetics of their iconic sound and in honoring the important role they played in pioneering the rock n’ roll movement, all while having a little fun sharing our own personal story.” With a father (Adrian Zmed) as a traveling singer/dancer/actor (Grease 2, Bachelor Party, T.J. Hooker), and a mother (Barbara) as a second grade teacher in a suburb of Los Angeles, the Zmed Brothers continuously strive to pay homage to their personal roots by always infusing an instinctual blend of entertainment (a la Smothers Brothers) and contextual education in their performance. The Everly Brothers career lasted over half a century, they recorded 21 studio albums, sold more than 60 million records world wide, had over 30 billboard top 100 singles (which still to this day is the record for most billboard charting hits of any sibling rock duo ever), received numerous accolades in their later career, and influenced countless legendary artists who came after them including The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Bee Gees, Neil Young....and the list goes on. The Zmed brothers are absolutely thrilled to be able to contribute to a cause that supports the recognition and preservation of the intimate and singular origins of America’s greatest Rock n’ Roll singing sibling duo. The Everly Brothers Experience 5 piece band consists of drums (Burleigh Drummond), electric guitar (rotating members), bass (rotating members), and the two singing brothers (Zachary and Dylan Zmed) up front with the signature Everly acoustic guitars. Would you place a bet on your partner’s faithfulness? And would you disguise yourself in order to test it? That’s exactly what Ferrando and Guglielmo do, and the surprising results are spelled out in the opera’s title: Così fan tutte (‘Women Are Like That’). As the innocent trick veers off-course, boisterous hijinks ensue, souls are searched, and true love is born – at some cost. Chock full of sublime Mozartean melodies and dazzling singing, Così fan tutte is the third and last of the brilliant operas Mozart wrote with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte (alongside Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni). It has variously been described as ‘a glorious soap-bubble’, ‘a deep and unsettling masterpiece’, ‘a musical lark’, and ‘a profound and terrifying tragicomedy’. All of those qualities and more shine through in Glyndebourne’s gorgeous period production by Nicholas Hytner, former longtime director of the National Theatre. Malone All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Cynthia Baron, Advisor With the end of the Hollywood studio era, big budget blockbuster musicals had to find ways to compete in the economic and cultural marketplace. Historical events such as the rise of television, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal influenced the way American audiences saw, and continue to see, the world. Film, theatre, and other artistic disciplines helped audiences understand, cope, and criticize societal changes. As audience perceptions changed, the film musical faced a crisis. In an attempt to maximize profits, Hollywood business practices forced an evolutionary branch in the development of the musical. One fork took the genre towards the embodiment of capitalistic and cultural excess as pointed to by Altman, Dyer, and others. These film musicals attempt to present Utopia. Film musicals such as Grease (1978), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Evita (1996) are large spectacles that utilize the high concept business model, as outlined by Justin Wyatt, to please audience expectations by managing conflict at the expense of presenting the story world as a utopia. The other branch of film musical exemplified in the films of Cabaret (1972) and All That Jazz (1979) criticize the price paid by an individual in pursuit of ideals that lie beyond dominant social values.
