A. Mozart’s opera and concert arias for tenor are among the first music written specifically for this voice type as it is understood today, and they form an essential pillar of the pedagogy and repertoire for the modern tenor voice. Yet while the opera arias have received a great deal of attention from scholars of the vocal literature, the concert arias have been comparatively overlooked; they are neglected also in relation to their counterparts for soprano, about which a great deal has been written. There has been some pedagogical discussion of the tenor concert arias in relation to the correction of vocal faults, but otherwise they have received little scrutiny. This is surprising, not least because in most cases Mozart’s concert arias were composed for singers with whom he also worked in the opera house, and Mozart always paid close attention to the particular capabilities of the musicians for whom he wrote: these arias offer us unusually intimate insights into how a first-rank composer explored and shaped the potential of the newly-emerging voice type of the modern tenor voice. -

Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Transcriptions of Beethoven´s Symphony No. 2, Op. 36: A Comparison of the Solo Piano and the Piano Quartet Versions. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2012, 30 pp., 2 figures, 13 musical examples, references, 19 titles. Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a noted Austrian composer and piano virtuoso who not only wrote substantially for the instrument, but also transcribed a series of important orchestral pieces. Among them are two transcriptions of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36- the first a version for piano solo and the second a work for piano quartet, with flute substituting for the traditional viola part. This study will examine Hummel’s treatment of the symphony in both transcriptions, looking at a variety of pianistic devices in the solo piano version and his particular instrumentation choices in the quartet version. Each of these transcriptions can serve a particular purpose for performers. The solo piano version is an obvious virtuoso vehicle, whereas the quartet version can be a refreshing program alternative in a piano quartet concert. -

5th Annual Classical Meets Pop Concert and Fireworks Display featuring NPR From the Top Alumni Musicians Mount Vernon Community Center th Saturday, July 4 On Saturday, July 4th at 7:30pm, four of America's most exciting musicians will perform a free concert in the Mount Vernon Community Center. Following the concert, there will be a fireworks display over Minnehonk Lake. Seating in the hall is on a first come, first serve basis. Guests are also encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and sit outside on the lawn to listen. Donations will be accepted in support of the 30 Mile River Watershed Association and the Parker Pond Association. Flutist Emi Ferguson, a faculty member at Julliard, has performed as concerto soloist in concerts and festivals around the world and was a featured performer alongside Yo-Yo Ma, Paul Simon, and James Taylor at the 10th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony of 9/11 at Ground Zero, where her performance of Amazing Grace was televised worldwide. -

Anadolu University, Turkey https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5792-2100 [email protected] ABSTRACT The piano, which is a solo instrument that takes part in educational process, can take role not only in instrumental education but also in chamber music education as well with the 6-hands pieces for three players that perform same composition on a single instrument. According to the international 6-hands piano literature, although the works of Alfred Schnittke's Hommage, Carl Czerny's Op.17 and 741, Paul Robinson's Pensees and Montmartre and many more are included, the Turkish piano literature has been found to have a limited number of compositions. The aim of the work is to contribute to the field by presenting musical analysis about the place and the importance of the educational use of the works composed for 6-hands which are extremely rare in the Turkish piano literature. As an example, the piece named Sky composed by Hasan Barış Gemici is considered. Analysis is supported by comparative methods in form, structuralism, rhythm, theoretical applications and performance; it also gives information about basic playing techniques. It is thought that this study carries importance in contributing to the limited number of Turkish 6-hands piano literature and researchers who will conduct research in this regard, in terms of creating resources for performers and composers who will interpret the literature. -

HANNAH TARLEY, violin Biography American violinist Hannah Tarley began playing the violin at age two. A winner of the 2018 Astral National Auditions, Ms. Tarley has soloed with orchestras including the San Francisco Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Academy of Conducting at Aspen Orchestra, Kiev Soloists, Lynn Philharmonia Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. The Pedagogical Legacy of Johann Nepomuk Hummel
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE PEDAGOGICAL LEGACY OF JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL. Jarl Olaf Hulbert, Doctor of Philosophy, 2006 Directed By: Professor Shelley G. Davis School of Music, Division of Musicology & Ethnomusicology Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), a student of Mozart and Haydn, and colleague of Beethoven, made a spectacular ascent from child-prodigy to pianist- superstar. A composer with considerable output, he garnered enormous recognition as piano virtuoso and teacher. Acclaimed for his dazzling, beautifully clean, and elegant legato playing, his superb pedagogical skills made him a much sought after and highly paid teacher. This dissertation examines Hummel’s eminent role as piano pedagogue reassessing his legacy. Furthering previous research (e.g. Karl Benyovszky, Marion Barnum, Joel Sachs) with newly consulted archival material, this study focuses on the impact of Hummel on his students. Part One deals with Hummel’s biography and his seminal piano treatise, Ausführliche theoretisch-practische Anweisung zum Piano- Forte-Spiel, vom ersten Elementar-Unterrichte an, bis zur vollkommensten Ausbildung, 1828 (published in German, English, French, and Italian). Part Two discusses Hummel, the pedagogue; the impact on his star-students, notably Adolph Henselt, Ferdinand Hiller, and Sigismond Thalberg; his influence on musicians such as Chopin and Mendelssohn; and the spreading of his method throughout Europe and the US. Part Three deals with the precipitous decline of Hummel’s reputation, particularly after severe attacks by Robert Schumann. His recent resurgence as a musician of note is exemplified in a case study of the changes in the appreciation of the Septet in D Minor, one of Hummel’s most celebrated compositions. -

Rob Nairn worked as Associate Professor of Double Bass at Melbourne Conservatorium and Head of the Early Music Department for the past three years. He previous taught on the faculty of the Juilliard School for 11 years and Penn State University for 18 years where he was a Distinguished Professor. A Past-president of the International Society of Bassists he hosted the Society’s 2009 Convention at Penn State. Rob received his Bachelor of Music with distinction from the Canberra School of Music and a post-graduate diploma from the Berlin Musikhochschule by courtesy of a two-year DAAD German Government Scholarship. His teachers have included Klaus Stoll, Tom Martin, and Max McBride. In 2008 he was awarded a Howard Foundation Fellowship from Brown University. Rob has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the English, Scottish and Australian Chamber Orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, The Oslo Philharmonic, The Gothenburg Symphony, The Baltimore Symphony, The Halle Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, and the Sydney, Adelaide, Queensland and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, the Australia Ensemble, The Australian World Orchestra and the Australian String Quartet. Rob has recorded for Deutsche Grammaphon, Sony Classical , EMI, Naxos, Tall Poppies, RCA and ABC Classics. In Historical Performance he is currently principal bass with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the Handel Haydn Society of Boston and has worked with the Boston Early Music Festival, Juilliard Baroque, Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, English Baroque Soloists, Smithsonian Chamber Players, Concerto Caledonia, Ironwood, Washington Bach Consort, the Aulos Ensemble, Rebel, Florilegium and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. -
