Rocky Bleier Field on the Knights of Columbus Sports Complex dedicated: Oct. 12, 2007 Xavier’s home football field was dedicated in honor of Rocky Bleier on Oct. 12, 2007. A 1964 graduate of Xavier, Bleier went on to play at the University of Notre Dame and then for 12 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After winning a national championship at Notre Dame, he recovered from severe injuries in the Vietnam War to earn a spot as a starter on the first team to win four Super Bowls – which the Steelers accomplished during a 6-year span... 1975, ’76, ’79 and ’80. Rocky Bleier Field at Xavier was dedicated Friday night, Oct. 12, 2007 in a special ceremony prior to the XHS football game at the Knights of Columbus Sports Complex behind XHS. The gate was manufactured by Metalist Laserfab of Oshkosh as a gift to Xavier High School. Note how there are 23 spindles at the bottom of the gates, the same number as Rocky's football jersey number for the Hawks when he played for Coach Gene ‘Torchy’ Clark. Below, the Fox Valley Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard presents the colors and the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard awaits to escort Rocky & the dignitaries into the facility for the dedication ceremony.

Rocky, captains & game officials meet before the game for the coin toss. 3 Rocky Bleier, left, and Tim Hanna, the mayor of the City of Appleton, during a ceremony on Saturday morning, Oct. 13, 2007, when the City of Appleton dedicated Rocky Bleier Run. The street is near Jones Park in downtown Appleton, close to where Bleier grew up back in the 1950's and 60's. He used to run the steps and hills of the park as part of his athletic training and then his rehab from injuries suffered in 1969 during the Vietnam War.

The entire plan includes making the area a gateway from downtown through Jones Park to the city’s new Waterfront Riverwalk.

4 FACILITY TID-BITS - ROCKY MAKEOVER Rocky Bleier Field on the Knights of Columbus Sports Complex

Xavier Football

The former Knights of Columbus Athletic Field at Xavier has undergone a major makeover, and there now is a new name for the Hawks’ home turf. The facility received:

1. a new grass playing surface, 2. a new 8-lane running track which has a top- of-the line rubberized surface, 3. a new 4-foot high permanent fence entirely around the outside lane of the track, 4. new & huge aluminum bleachers -- with fully- enclosed, increased seating and a specially designed sight-line... which enables spectators to better see all of the lanes for a track meet when runners go in front of the seating area, plus it gives significantly better visibility for the football field, 5. new, much larger 2-level press box to accommodate news media and coaches, 6. new, double-wide runway for the jumping Aerial view, 2005 events & pole vault, 7. new, larger high jump area, 8. new, handicap access ramp and wheelchair seating areas in the bleachers, 9. new, pro-model 30-foot-high, arched football goal posts, with an 8-foot offset, 10. new underground, automatic watering system and drainage tile, 11. new main ticket entrance area, spectator walkway and engraved brick area, 12. new, larger scoreboard – in memory of the late Bradley Williams, the Xavier football player who in September, 2005 collapsed and died on the XHS football practice field from a congenital heart problem completely unrelated to football, 13. new, brick concession stand with storage & restrooms, and, 14. new, 485-foot deep well to pump water from an underground river deep below the game field. It enables water to be put on all of the athletic fields at Xavier without expensive city water.

Most of the work was done in 2004, when Xavier played its home games at the St. Joseph Middle School field in Appleton. The huge KofC field project was spearheaded by the Xavier Booster Club, which also recently helped with the installation of 4 new tennis courts on the St. Joe’s grounds as well as a complete renovation of the Xavier football practice field, located adjacent to the game field. Considerable work has been headed by the XBC since that major makeover.

Xavier Coach David Hinkens e 2014 Football Season

 2014 = 14th season as head football coach at Xavier.

 He is only the 10th head varsity football coach in school history, as XHS begins its 55th season of Xavier Football. Hinkens is the first to coach a Hawk team in the WIAA Football Playoffs. He has coached Xavier in the Playoffs during 11 of the past 12 seasons – his first XHS team missed out of the Playoffs via an obscure, since-eliminated tiebreaker. And, 2012 was the first time XHS did not qualify for the Playoffs after 10 straight appearances.

– Six of the Xavier teams coached by Hinkens won a conference championship (2011, ’10, ’09, ’05, ’04, ’02) and 3 times his Hawks finished just one game out of the top spot in league play while taking second in ’06 and ’13, and third in ’07. Eleven of his 12 previous Xavier squads never had more than 3 losses in a regular season. All of the losses in 2008 were to eventual Playoff teams, including 2 to eventual state champs. The 2010 team was his second team to go undefeated in a regular season and his third one to win the conference crown with an unbeaten record. That team was also the second team coached by Hinkens to make it to Level 4 of the Playoffs, one game shy of the WIAA State championship game in Madison; that was a feat his XHS team duplicated in 2013 when Hinkens coached the Hawks for the third tine in a Level 4 game.

– Hinkens is now the all-time leader in career football coaching wins at XHS. With a 2009 Playoff win on the Hawks' home turf, Hinkens surpassed the late Gene ‘Torchy’ Clark, the first football coach at Xavier. Clark, in his 9 seasons (from 1960-1968), had a record of 69-9-2. Hinkens recorded his 70th win in that Level 1 WIAA post-season game on 10-27-09 against Oconto, in his 9th season at the Hawks’ helm.

– Hinkens previously was an assistant coach at Kaukauna High School for 10 years... under his dad, Glen Hinkens. His father, affectionately called Grandpa Glen, was an assistant coach for years for the Hawks. In 2000, David was an assistant coach at in Appleton under Dave Brown.

– A 1984 graduate of Kaukauna High School, Hinkens is employed for an athletic information and technology company called Hudl. He is a Territory Manager – covering the states of , Minnesota and Iowa. David and his wife, Julie, have two sons... Drew, 17, and Darren, 15. They live in Darboy, just east of Appleton.

– A 1988 graduate of UW-Oshkosh, Hinkens was an assistant for the 1992 Kaukauna football team which finished as the state runners-up in the WIAA Championship Game at in Madison. He also was an assistant basketball coach at Kaukauna High School when the Ghosts won their first Fox Valley Association basketball title in their school history.

PLAYOFF HISTORY [ M2-C9---XAVIER--MEDIA-PACKS—PLAYOFF HISTORY ] Text on THIS page of the file was updated 10-26-2014 16 TID-BITS – Xavier in WIAA Playoffs

2014 Football Season  Level 2 vs. West De Pere on 10-31-2014

Ø PLAYOFFS MOVE TO LEVEL 2 Xavier will be at West De Pere for Level 2 of the 2014 WIAA Division 3 Playoffs, as the Hawks beat Seymour 43-16 at home last Friday night in Level 1... while West De Pere defeated Waupaca 56-14 also on Friday at West De Pere. The complete brackets are in this Info Pack.

Ù XHS IN PLAYOFFS FOR 15th SEASON, 12th TIME IN WIAA On 10-31-14, the Hawks will compete in the 31st Playoff game in all-time school history, and, 2014 marks the12th season in which Xavier has advanced to WIAA post-season play after 3 appearances in WISAA competition. A complete look at the Playoff History for Xavier Football is on another page in this pack.

Ú HINKENS-COACHED XHS TEAM ONCE AGAIN IN THE PLAYOFFS Xavier will participate in the WIAA Playoffs for the 12th season in the past 13 years under head coach David Hinkens, who is in his14th season guiding the Hawks. It will be the first time Hinkens coaches against Jack Batten, the West De Pere head coach who is in his first year... as the long-time WDP assistant and defensive coordinator replaced Bill Turnquist. He retired after the 2013 season following 39 years as the West De Pere head coach and 45 years of coaching prep football.

Û BRACKETS PUT HAWKS IN GROUP B The 2014 Playoff brackets have Xavier assigned to what the WIAA calls Group B, and, it’s the 4th year that XHS is in Division 3 of the WIAA post-season. From 2002 thru 2009, Xavier was in Division 4... based on the enrollment number of qualifiers in those seasons. XHS ranks 24th by enrollment of the 32-team, 2014 Division 3 field. Opponent enrollment info is on their AT A GLANCE page in this pack.

Ü HAWKS TRAVEL TO WEST DE PERE AGAIN For the 2nd straight year, Xavier will travel to West De Pere for Level 2 of the Playoffs. It is the 3rd time they will meet in the Playoffs, and 4th time the teams meet in Football. A complete look at the History-Series with West De Pere is also in this Info Pack.

Ý LEVEL 3 SITE / OPPONENT With a change in 2012 in the WIAA Playoff Procedures, Level 3 games will be hosted by the higher seed, unless the WIAA determines a neutral site is needed. Xavier is the # 3 seed while West De Pere is the # 2 seed in Division 3, Group B. The winner of Xavier vs. West De Pere will advance to play in and host Level 3 against the winner of 5-seed Luxemburg-Casco vs. 8-seed Berlin, who play Friday in Level 2 at Luxemburg-Casco.

Þ FEELIN’ BLUE & COIN TOSS Each year the WIAA alternates which team wears which color uniforms in the Football Playoffs. Xavier will always be the second team alphabetically... so... the Hawks will always be decked out in blue for each game they play in 2014. The coin toss is also associated with the color of uniforms, and the team wearing dark jerseys will always be “heads.”

P Home Field: Rocky Bleier Field on the Knights of Columbus Sports Complex – behind Xavier H.S. The facility was renamed in a special ceremony on Oct. 12, 2007. Rocky is a 1964 graduate of XHS. A major renovation project took place in 2004 at the Hawks’ regular home field. Work included a new playing surface, bleachers, 2-level press box, underground watering system, drain tile, goal posts, and rubberized track.

P In 2007, Xavier played for the first time in the Eastern Valley Conference: now 9 Teams: Xavier, Berlin, Clintonville, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Ripon, Waupaca and Winneconne.

P In 2013, 9-game regular season... after 8-game max in 2012: Last year, the WIAA ‘returned’ to a 9-game regular season maximum after an 8-game max in 2012 because of the early start to the 2012 season. The WIAA eliminated the 3-games-in-10-days scenario in the Playoffs.

P In 2014, the final season of Xavier in the Eastern Valley Conference: Starting in the 2014-15 school year, the WIAA has determined that Xavier will be moved to a newly-revamped Bay Conference. The new-look 9-team Bay Conference for football only, as determined by the WIAA, includes Xavier, Green Bay East, Green Bay West, Menasha, New London, Seymour, Shawano, Waupaca and West De Pere. For all other sports, the WIAA placed Xavier in an 8-team Bay with the same schools listed above, minus Waupaca.
