Dieses Mal kommt ihm alles anders vor. Düstere Vorahnungen plagen ihn; warum ist er hier, was hält ihn fest? Pierre sucht die Antwort. Wie ein Pathologe beobachtet er Menschen, Straßen, verborgene Orte. Und dann verschwindet John. Hängt das mit dem Mysterium von uralten buddhistischen Schriften zusam- men? Pierre geht mit einer jungen Indologin den Spuren nach. Was als Spiel beginnt, wird bald zum tödlichen Ernst. Stille Tage in Bangkok ist ein Roman über eine Stadt, die ihre dunklen und hellen Seiten hinter leuchtenden Fassaden verbirgt, wo Besucher den eigenen Illusionen erliegen, in der westliches Denken und Fühlen zerfließen. Warnung: Manchmal rutscht das Skalpell ab, schneidet zu tief und berührt Samsara, den ewigen Kreislauf des Lebens: Leser mit festen Weltbildern, strikten moralischen Grundsätzen, unabänderlichen Lebenskonzepten könnten Schaden nehmen. 6 Autor Steve Casal ist ein Pseudonym. Steve studierte Rechts- wissenschaft und Philosophie, durchlief mehrere Lebens- entwürfe, bereist seit vielen Jahren Südostasien, lebt abwechselnd als digitaler Nomade in Bangkok und als sesshafter Nomade in Prag. Daneben schreibt er als freier Autor Essays über Reiseorte, asiatische Kulturen und die Menschen in Südostasien. Steve ist Gründer der Internet- Plattform „Bangkok von Insidern“. 7 „Every man dies, not every man really lives.” — Randall Wallace 8 Soi 22 Regentropfen trommeln in einem nicht endenden Stakkato auf den Fenstersims des benachbarten Balkons, springen hoch, zerfallen zu feinem Nebel. Keine Form gleicht der anderen, ein unablässiges Schauspiel des Entstehens und Vergehens. Es ist Regenzeit, der Himmel grau; quellende Regenwolken aquarellieren immer neue Grautöne, die in den Fensterflächen der Hochhäuser zu abstrakten Gemäl- den zerfließen. Durch das Fenster dringen dumpfe Stra- ßengeräusche, die unverwechselbare Kakofonie der Groß- stadt. Nur langsam weicht der oberflächliche Schlaf nach einem langen, ereignislosen Flug. Missmutig beobachte ich die Kaskaden der nicht endenden Wasserströme. Wieder Liberty Place. Das Zimmer blickt auf den Hof wie beim letzten Mal. Alles ist an seinem Platz: Bett, Schrank, Tresor, Kühlschrank, Mikrowelle, Schreibtisch. Die Klimaanlage schnaubt kalte Luft in den Raum. Liberty Place, das Serviced Apartment in der Soi 22, beherbergt viele Männer, zumeist ältere Männer. Es sind Männer, die ihre Familie, Karriere und Vergangenheit hinter sich ließen; Männer, die in ihrer früheren Welt keiner vermisst, niemand mehr liebt. Hier wohnen auch die Alleinsamen, die einen anderen Menschen zum Leben nicht brauchen, das Leben nur mit sich selbst teilen. Die Einsamen fühlen sich in dieser Stadt nicht wohl, Bangkok duldet keine Einsamkeit. Die Zweisamen reißt die Energie der Stadt auseinander, saugt sie auf und spuckt sie einzeln wieder aus. Die Bewohner des Liberty kennen einander kaum, wollen einander nicht kennen. Jeder atmet sein 9 STEVE CASAL eigenes Leben, dringt nicht in das Leben des anderen, behält seine Geschichte, Träume und Ängste für sich. Soi 22, eine Seitenstraße der Sukhumvit, ist ein bequemes Asyl: Restaurants, Straßenküchen, Hotels, Bars, 7/11 und Family-Mart Läden, 24-Stunden geöffnet. Die Düfte der Straßenküchen wabern durch die Abgase der Taxikorsos. Jede Bar spielt ihre eigene Musik. Barmädchen locken die Gäste mit „once more söör, you handsam, söör“. Pai nai, wohin gehst du, hauchen die Schönen der Nacht. Sogar Schulmädchen schenken einem Farang, dem Fremden, ihr Lächeln. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite erwuchs ein neues Gebäude. Ich kann mich an das alte nicht erinnern. Den Eingang zum Restaurant daneben versperren Bretter; ein unendlicher Kreislauf des Sterbens und der Wieder- geburt. An der mobilen Suppenküche begrüßt mich die Eigentümerin mit einem Lächeln. Sie ergreift einen Schöpf- löffel, stopft dünne weiße Nudeln, Sojasprossen und frische Gewürzblätter hinein. Aus einem ungekühlten Gefäß wandern Fleischstreifen hinzu, Guay teow, eine Straßensuppe. Maa wan nii, heute angekommen, sage ich zu der hellhäutigen Frau aus Chiang Mai. In einem Verschlag aus Holz und Blech, eingezwängt in einer Häusernische, wäscht ihr Mann die Teller. Er bringt die Suppe, beachtet mich kaum. Er beachtete mich noch nie. Mittags bauen sie auf und gegen zwei Uhr nachts wieder ab. Wahrscheinlich leben sie auch in dem Verschlag. Feuchtwarme Luft erschwert das Atmen. Der Himmel verschandelte sein Antlitz zu einem tiefen Schwarz. Feiner Regen schleicht durch die Straßen. Fremd und bedrohlich wirkt die Soi. Düstere Vorahnungen bedrängen mein Gehirn. Ja, wieder in Bangkok, wieder für lange Monate in einer Stadt, die mich empfängt wie eine Geliebte, nach der 10 STILLE TAGE IN BANGKOK man sich sehnte, an die man sich gewöhnte und nicht mehr weiß, ob man sie noch liebt. Ich eile zurück ins Liberty. Nur wenige Meter vor dem Eingang erfasst mich eine mächtige Regenbö. Es ist kein guter Anfang dieses Mal. Die Agonie meines Tages, aller Tage, endet abends am Hinterausgang. Der Haupteingang ist bereits verschlossen. Tagsüber arbeite ich als digitaler Nomade. Der Kunde oder Kandidat merken nicht, dass der Headhunter, weit weg, von einem unbequemen Holzstuhl mit ihnen spricht. Ich mag die Dämmerung und die Nacht. Am Tage gebärdet sich die Stadt heiß und schwül, verschwimmt in einer polyfonen Symphonie aus Grau und Hässlichkeit. Erst in der Nacht wird sie zur Grand Dame; grell geschminkt im Glitzerkleid erschaut sie die Träume der Entschlossenen, tröstet die Einsamen, lotst die Schüchter- nen. Wie ferngesteuert quäle ich mich ich aus dem Raum. Die Erwartung des Bekannten lähmt die Energie. Der Tür- öffner grüßt mit leisem Summen. Die Tür springt auf. Sofort schlägt mir der unverwechselbare Duft ins Gesicht, den Bangkok aus unsichtbaren Nüstern Tag und Nacht verströmt. „Massage söör, welcome“, es sind andere Mädchen als vor sechs Monaten. Vor dem New Cowboy sitzt ein abgemagerter alter Amerikaner vor einem Bier und beschweigt einen anderen alten Mann. Der Ameri- kaner sitzt immer vor dem New Cowboy, meistens allein, immer vor einem Bier, meistens schon am Vormittag. Er wohnt seit vielen Jahren im exklusiven Ballys Serviced Apartment in der angrenzenden Quer-Soi. Im Danny’s Corner harren nur wenige Gäste. Diese offene Eckbar im Westernstil ist mein Wohnzimmer, die nächtliche Theater- loge und Bühne. Von hieraus beobachte ich die Straße, die 11 STEVE CASAL Schauspieler, das Publikum und spiele gelegentlich mit. Die Bar schließt erst, wenn keine Gäste mehr auf das „once more söör“ antworten. Die Barbesitzerin hält auch die Polizei, die Herren im Braun, gut bei Laune. Am Ende der Soi 22 tost die breite Sukhumvit, das moderne Bangkok: Apartments, Büros, Shopping-Malls, Hotels, Restaurants. Das schillernde Nachtleben ist hier zu Hause. Die Glitzerwelt spielt Fassade, darunter, darüber, dahinter brodelt es und zischt. Viele Nächte durchstreifte ich bereits die Sukhumvit, streunte in den kleinen Sois, den Seitengassen, wie Dalis Apotheker von Ampurias auf der Suche nach absolut Nichts. Nie dasselbe; ständig wechseln die Sois ihr Gewand, zeigen jede Nacht ein anderes Gesicht. Hochhäuser fressen die alte Bebauung wie Krebsgeschwüre. Nur wenige Fenster der modernen Wohnmaschinen wagen zu leuchten, starren mit dunklen Augen in die engen Sois hinab.

This thesis examines the organization Empower and their members, who consist of sex working women in Thailand. The purpose is to explore the more liberal point of view of prostitution and how the female members perceive Empower. Furthermore the study investigates if the organization can improve the sex workers empowerment. The study also delineates how these women reflect on their professional role as a sex working woman and whether the women relate to feminine discourses. The study is implemented in Chiang Mai, Thailand during the fall of the year 2010 and is based on qualitative methods like interview, focus group, observations and text analysis. The empiric material is interpreted from theoretical perspectives such as empowerment, queer theory and postcolonial theory. The thesis show how female sex workers in Empower collectively fight for their rights to avoid being labeled as victims. By the basic ideologies of Empower and the women’s abilities to work on their own conditions this can perceive as a statement to increase their empowerment. The study also exemplifies the difficulties with considering sex work as a professional occupation when hierarchy of values and normativity limit the freedom of action.

    November 1998 Cheryll and I arrived in Bangkok after 32 hours of travelling. We took a cab to our hotel and then a short walk to the river. I noticed during the cab ride that the speedometer was not working (probably disconnected to keep the odometer from accumulating miles; throughout our trip, 90% of the speedometers were inoperative). The walk was a cultural experience. The Thais apparently don’t feel a need for crosswalks. Crossing a busy street seems to be a test of wills. Who will stop first? The car or the pedestrian? Bangkok is a polluted, noisy, crowded place where everyone is in a hurry. Many people were wearing surgical masks to filter out some of the pollution. We took a ferry ride up the river to the center of town and then decided to see some of the sights. We were reading our tour book when a nicely dressed Thai gentleman approached and asked if he could help. We said no; we were on our way to look at the palace. He said we were out of luck. It was Buddha’s day and they were closed. We said we might just take the ferry back. He said on Saturday the ferries stopped running early. Instead, he showed us on our map a wat (Buddhist Temple) which was open only one day each year. Nearby was a factory where we could see some local craftsmen. We said we weren’t interested in the factory (drivers get a commission on what you buy and prices are increased accordingly), but the wat sounded interesting.

Thailand shares borders with Myanmar to the west and north, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south. The country is divided geographically into six regions: the North, the Northeast, the West, the South, the East, and the Central Plain (Royal Institute of Thailand, 1982). Sunny and rainy tropical climate is prevalent throughout the whole country. The total population is currently about 67.2 million, with a population growth rate of 0.60 percent. Thai-speaking Buddhists make up about 95 percent of the population, and Thai is also the official language of the country. The size of the work force (in 2009) exceeds 39 million, with the majority of workers under 35 years of age. Each year about 800,000 people join this force (National Statistical Office, Bank of Thailand, and CIA World Fact, 2010).
