A single hard shard compressed since December, waiting to drop down with ninja skill and pierce the skull of a passerby – then melt! December 2012 Leaving no evidence! I think that was an Alfred Hitchcock episode. Or, it’s November 2012 someone’s job to take the sign away, and he hasn’t gotten the order yet, October 2012 because the person in charge of telling him to take the sign away hasn’t September 2012 gotten around to asking building maintenance if it’s safe to stop warning people about falling ice. You know, what with it being seventy degrees this August 2012 week. So the sign stays, because even though there’s someone who works in July 2012 the building who could pick it up and bring it in, there’s no reason for him to June 2012 do it. May 2012 Imagine the trouble a man could get into if he took that sign back inside April 2012 without approval. November 2011 I am unusually sensitive to the subject, because there’s a traffic warning October 2011 signal outside my house, if that’s the term. No, that’s the right term; a September 2011 http://lileks.com/bleat/?p=6423 Page 2 of 13 Thursday, April 1! | The Bleat. 11/15/13, 9:09 AM dwelling is a house. And a traffic warning signal is one of those folding August 2011 orange things with a flashing light on top, placed over a particularly July 2011 egregious pothole or a dead body or some other road obstruction. It’s been June 2011 sitting in the gutter since September, and I have no idea what it’s supposed to warn us about. If I put it in the middle of the street and spray-painted an May 2011 orange circle on the ground and added some words that suggested utility April 2011 work – BURIED COPTIC CATACOMBS – it would cause great confusion to the March 2011 city workers: we don’t have any work orders on this. Well, catacombs, that’s February 2011 the Archeology Department’s problem. January 2011 It has company: last year we requested, and received, a big orange piece of December 2010 wood with an orange metal bracket to block off a street for a party; we do this every year, and a few days later they come by, pick it up. November 2010 October 2010 That’s still sitting there. Granted, on public property, but it’s there. Big ugly September 2010 orange wood the city should have picked up five months ago. And in one sense it’s not public property. August 2010 July 2010 It’s mine. June 2010 MINE, I tell you. Or would have been, if not for some decision made decades May 2010 ago for the greater good; the original property description of Jasperwood April 2010 includes the small grassy island, but a street was cut through it. Sensible: makes for better traffic flow. But I still find myself standing on the tip of what March 2010 one was the farthest reach of the Jasperwood property, considering ways to February 2010 annex it, if only to give the dog more territory to call his one. 1 “50% Laughter, 50% Despair: A Dialogue with Jarett Kobek” Jarett Kobek and Rita Raley Published in ASAP/Journal 5.3 (2020): 469–487 When Jarett Kobek says he writes garbage, he is not to be believed. The self-laceration is ubiquitous—“this is a bad novel,” the narrator of I Hate the Internet (2016) says in so many words, throughout the text—but it should not be understood as false modesty, an anxious plea for affirmation, or as stylistic affectation. Such pronouncements are instead aspirational. “I try to make everything a little shitty,” Kobek explains in an interview, because, the argument goes, truly holding a mirror up to the surreal horror that is post-9/11 America necessitates a self- conscious abandonment of the figure of the romanticized writer, as well as the aesthetic project of literary realism.1 Writers of “good novels,” his narrator protests, have “missed the only important story in American life,” “the world of hidden persuaders, of the developing communications landscape”—in other words, the internet.2 It may be that the new idioms and genres of self-expression and the accelerated temporal rhythms of multichannel communication are ill-suited to the mode of the good novel. But Kobek’s argument is not about literary form or language, so one cannot point to Flarf, uncreative writing, Alt-Lit, or even Emoji Dick as counterexamples. Kobek’s indictment is more fundamental and his outrage more overtly, unreservedly, political. What US writers in particular have missed, his work suggests, is the extent to which life itself has been altered by an industry that has broken its utopian promise; that captures and capitalizes on every utterance; that rewards extremity, cruelty, and, yes, stupidity— in other words, the internet.

AUSTRALIA APRIL 2019 The True Story of Maddie Bright Mary-Rose MacColl The bestselling author of In Falling Snow returns with a spellbinding tale of friendship, love and loyalty Description 'This book has it all: an unforgettable first chapter, a fascinating insight into the Prince of Wales' visit to Australia in 1920 through the eyes of two women who worked for him, and a compelling mystery set in contemporary times, against the backdrop of Princess Diana's death. Truly wonderful storytelling.' - Natasha Lester, bestselling author of The Paris Seamstress In 1920, at seventeen years of age, Maddie Bright takes a job as a serving girl on the Royal Tour of Australia by Edward, Prince of Wales. She meets the prince's young staff - his vivacious press secretary Helen Burns, his most loyal man Rupert Waters - and the prince himself - beautiful, boyish, godlike. Maddie might be on the adventure of a lifetime. Sixty-one years later, Maddie Bright is living a small life in a ramshackle house in Paddington, Brisbane. But an unlooked- for letter has arrived in the mail and there's news on the television from Buckingham Palace that makes her shout back at the screen. Maddie Bright's true story may change. In August 1997, London journalist Victoria Byrd is tasked by her editor with the job of finding the elusive M.A. Bright, author of the classic war novel of ill-fated love, Autumn Leaves. It seems Bright has written a second novel, and Victoria has been handed the scoop. Recently engaged to an American film star, Victoria is horrified by her own sudden celebrity and keen to escape to Australia to follow the story.

Being among the first video games, these retro games are like the Shakespeare of video games. Most of the ideas and tactics have already been tried and are now being placed in a new context. For example, the multi-player Retro Resurgence? fighting style of Sega’s Heavyweight Champ from 1976 is similar to the objectives of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. from 2018. Retro games have mapped out the path and created a blueprint for other games to follow. A major charm of classic retro games is the simplicity. These straightforward objectives allow for mindless gameplay and appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Wyatt Steere (12) pointed out that the “simplicity of these games is entertaining, and the repetition is fun to try and master.” By having a seemingly easy task, it is not difficult to imagine an hour passing by while trying to achieve a Pixels: the Monet of Gaming? new high score.
