Portugal begin their bid for a place at UEFA EURO 2016 with a first UEFA meeting against Albania at senior level, the visitors eager to make a positive start in Aveiro after drawing their last game in Portugal. Match background • The countries have met five times with Portugal boasting the record W4 D1 L0 (W2 D1 L0 at home – W2 D0 L0 in Albania). They are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition. • The sides first met in 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying. Artur Jorge's Portugal won 3-0 in Tirana on 9 October 1996, with goals from Luís Figo (11), Hélder Cristóvão (77) and Rui Costa (89). João Pinto (14) and Figo (70) were on target as Portugal won the return fixture 2-0 in Porto. • The sides next met in an action-packed friendly in Lisbon on 11 October 2003: Luiz Felipe Scolari's side took a seventh-minute lead through Figo, but it was 2-1 to Albania by the break, Ardian Aliaj (13) and Igli Tare (44) on target. Simão (51) Rui Costa (57), Pauleta (59) and Miguel (65) all scored for Portugal after the break, Aliaj (61) replying as the game ended 5-3. • Their last meetings, in 2010 World Cup qualifying, were closer, Arie Haan's Albania holding Carlos Queiroz's Portugal to a 0-0 draw in Braga on 15 October 2008. Under Josip Kuže, they came within seconds of earning another draw in Tirana, Erjon Bogdani (28) cancelling out Hugo Almeida's opener (27), only for Bruno Alves to score a 90th- minute winner. • Portuguese and Albanian clubs have met in four UEFA competition games: the Portuguese teams' record is W3 D1 L0 (W2 D0 L0 at home – W1 D1 L0 in Albania) with eight goals scored and none conceded. • The nations' most recent competitive meetings came in 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification. Albania twice came from behind to draw 2-2 in Durres in the first meeting on 14 November 2011 – despite ending the game with ten men – but lost the return fixture 3-1 in Marinha Grande on 6 June 2012. • In the 20 UEFA games between Albanian and Portuguese sides – including club games, youth games, women's matches and futsal – there has been just one Albanian victory. Rigels Qosa (68) scored the only goal in Tirana as Albania beat Portugal 1-0 in a UEFA European Under-16 Championship qualifier on 3 March 1993. Of the remaining 19 games, 15 have been Portuguese wins.

5 Portugal - Albania Sunday 7 September 2014 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Estádio Municipal de Aveiro, Aveiro Head coach Paulo Bento Date of birth: 20 June 1969 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: CF Benfica, CF Estrela da Amadora, Vitória SC, SL Benfica, Real Oviedo CF, Sporting Clube de Portugal Coaching career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, Portugal • A former international midfielder who made an instant impact upon rising to the top job at Sporting in October 2005, Paulo Bento has enjoyed success throughout his football life. He began his playing career at Estrela da Amadora, lifting the Portuguese Cup in 1989/90. • Moved on to Vitória Guimarães before a switch to Benfica brought another cup triumph in 1995/96, prior to four seasons in Spain with Real Oviedo. Joined Sporting ahead of 2000/01, winning the Portuguese double the following campaign. Retired from playing in summer 2004 and quickly accepted a role in the Sporting coaching set-up where he guided the youth team to the national title in 2004/05. • In October 2005 was promoted to head coach after the sacking of José Peseiro and quickly improved the side's fortunes, leading Sporting on a run of ten straight victories between January and April 2006 and winning the Portuguese Cup in 2007 and 2008, adding the Super Cup in 2007/08. • Started 2008/09 with another Super Cup triumph against FC Porto yet failed to add to that and left the post midway through the next term after a series of poor results. In September 2010 was appointed Carlos Queiroz's successor as Portugal coach after the team had taken only one point from their first two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers; oversaw a revival that culminated in a play-off victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. • Bento's Portugal lost to Spain on penalties in the UEFA EURO 2012 semi-finals but dusted themselves down to reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup, once more via the play-offs, although they failed to survive the group stage in Brazil. He agreed a two-year extension in 2014, committing to coach Portugal for the duration of their UEFA EURO 2016 campaign. Gianni De Biasi Date of birth: 16 June 1956 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Treviso FC, FC Internazionale Milano, AC Reggiana 1919, Pescara Calcio, Brescia Calcio, US Città di Palermo, Vicenza Calcio, Bassano Virtus 55 ST Coaching career: FC Pro Vasto, Carpi FC 1909, Cosenza Calcio, SPAL 1907, Modena FC, Brescia Calcio, Torino FC (three times), Levante UD, Udinese Calcio, Albania • Served apprenticeship as an academy coach and on the lower rungs of the Italian football ladder before making his name overseeing back-to-back promotions at Modena – guiding them from the third division to Serie A in 2002. It ended a 38-year absence from the top flight. • Helped Modena survive first season among the elite before moving to Brescia, where he stayed two years before embarking on a tumultuous spell at Torino in 2005. • Arrived with Torino picking up the pieces after bankruptcy and exceeded expectations by steering them back to Serie A in his first campaign, only to be replaced by Alberto Zaccheroni three days before the start of the next term. He was reappointed within seven months, leading the Granata to safety. • Spent 2007/08 at Levante, winning plaudits despite relegation, then returned for a third stint at Torino with five games of the season remaining and saved them from relegation again. Sacked that December, he had a two-month reign at Udinese in 2009/10 before finding more constancy as Albania boss. • A one-time midfielder with a handful of top-flight playing campaigns under his belt, De Biasi was installed in December 2011 as successor to Josip Kuže. He signed a new deal running until the end of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying in November 2013.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).
From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.
Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
