Guest speakers included Director of Athletics Merritt Norvell, Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Izzo, former All-American Gregory Kelser, for- mer Athletic Director Joe Kearney, and former Coach Jud Heathcote. Also honored at the reception and during the game were members of the 1979 team and the national championship cheerleading squad. Play- ers returning included Magic Johnson, Kelser, and Jay Vincent, whose jersey was retired during a halftime celebration with his team.     SPARTAN BASKETBALL HISTORY AND TRADITION 1979 NCAA CHAMPIONS The 1978-79 season was truly a magical one for Coach Jud Heathcote and his Michigan State Spartans. Blending a perfect combination of individual ability, enthu- siasm and teamwork, Heathcote formed a cohesive unit that captivated the nation and sellout crowds at Jenison Field House. The Spartans compiled a 26-6 overall record and went 13-5 in the Big Ten to share the league crown with Purdue and Iowa. State steamrolled through the NCAA Tournament, ending the season on top of the college basketball world with a 75-64 victory over Larry Bird and unbeaten Indi- ana State. The 1978-79 squad gathered at Jenison Field House on Aug. 12, 1989, to play one more game against a team of former Spartan All-Stars. On a hot, sweltering night, the National Champi- onship squad, led by Earvin Johnson’s 25 points and 17 rebounds, topped the All-Stars, 95-93, before a sellout crowd of 10,004. 126 MICHIGAN STATE MEN’S BASKETBALL 2000 NCAA CHAMPIONS Tom Izzo repeatedly talked to his team about leaving its mark on the program. The 1999-2000 Spartans did more than leave their mark; they set the standard by which all future Michigan State teams would be measured. Part of being a champion is winning titles, which the Spartans accomplished in winning the Na- tional Championship, a third straight Big Ten Championship and a second consecutive Big Ten Tourna- ment title. Michigan State’s three consecutive conference crowns marked only the eighth time in league history that a team has won three straight titles.

    Chapter 15 - Red Cedar Rebounds You cannot step twice into the same river. Heraclitus (circa 535 BC – 475 BC) While Heraclitus posited that “you cannot step twice into the same river,” the question is whether one tries a first time step into life’s river of challenges. For centuries the Red Cedar River has flowed from points east of Okemos, through Okemos and the campus of Michigan State University, and onward to points west. But, over the past half-century, only a select group of Okemos High Chieftain basketball players realized their dream of grabbing a rebound on the Chieftains home court and moving the basketball from the Chieftains O-ZONE to the Spartans IZZONE to become a Michigan State Spartan. Yet one Chieftain-cum-Spartan – Kristen Rasmussen – did step twice into the Red Cedar to return to the basketball court on which she once played Chieftain basketball and serve as head coach of the Okemos High girls’ basketball program. Over the past 60 seasons of Spartans basketball (‘60-61 to ’19-‘20), only 14 Chieftain basketball players traveled down the Red Cedar to change their uniforms from Maroon and White of the Chieftains to the Green and White of the Spartans, this happening when they stepped onto the court of Jenison Field House or the Breslin Center The “Time Line” graphics on the next two pages show the seasons in which Okemos High Chieftains were members of a Michigan State University Spartans basketball squad, with the second graphic showing the seasons (maroon) in which a Spartans basketball squad had no Chieftain.
