From The Rector:

Dear Friends, I want to begin with some words from the late David Watson describing the cross on which Jesus died.

It’s the picture of violence – yet the key to peace A picture of suffering – yet the key to healing A picture of death – yet the key to life A picture of weakness – yet the key to power A picture of punishment – yet the key forgiveness A picture of vicious hatred – yet the key to love A picture of supreme shame… ...yet the Christian’s supreme boast!

For many people the Christian faith, or religion as some like to say, covers many things. It brings comfort and peace, meaning and purpose. It teaches us to be kind and compassionate, patient and good. It has for several centuries been at the very core of English society, so much so that many people call themselves Christian without really understanding what that means.

The stories of Good Friday and Easter Day lie at the very heart of the Christian faith. Here in the cross and the empty tomb we come face to face with what human life is fundamentally about – God’s love. That love however is not presented in a free and easy ‘sugar daddy’ style, for not only is God love, but he is also holy and just. That is why Easter Day must be preceded by Good Friday. You cannot bypass the cross of Christ.

St Paul speaks of this in the opening chapter of his first letter to the church at Corinth. We preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called … Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Cor. 1:23-24). Today we can read in place of the Jews the religious establishment, and that includes much of the church, for whom the death of Jesus on the cross is an unwelcome intrusion into an otherwise comfortable system of moral teaching and comforting words. For the Gentiles we can see the secular, non-Christian society in which we live, for whom the story of Jesus death is literally a foolish notion.

But the truth of the matter is this – there is no eternal life without the forgiveness of the cross, no place in heaven without receiving the mercy of God at Calvary. There is not reconciliation between man and God, unless we first unite ourselves with Jesus Christ at the cross. For it is the cross of Christ, and no other place, where we find the power and wisdom of God at work.

5

So forget the chocolate eggs, fluffy bunnies, spring flowers and newborn lambs. If you do not recognise your need for forgiveness and come to the cross of Christ seeking God’s mercy and love then Easter will be an empty, meaningless experience. As the old saying goes – No pain, no gain!

Yours in Christ Simon Drew All For Christ + Christ For All A five year strategy for St Michael and All Angels’ Church, Middlewich

Back in November of last year the PCC and the staff team spent some time thinking about a longer term strategy for St Michael’s Church. The overall desire was to see growth both physical and spiritual. Since then our prayers, reflections and discussions have led us to develop a five year strategy based around the five areas of discipleship, mission and resources. Over the next few months we will seek to share that in a short series of articles. The strategy strap line & mission statement are:

All For Christ + Christ For All Committed to Discipleship, effective in Mission, and faithful in Stewardship

So what do we mean by committed to discipleship? To be a disciple of Jesus is different to being a believer in Jesus. There is more to it than being part of a Sunday congregation. It is best illustrated by looking at Jesus and his 12 disciples. For three years Jesus went around Palestine, teaching, healing, and performing miracles. Great crowds followed him (see the feeding of the 5,000 for example). But he only chose 12 disciples in those three years. Men who put aside businesses and family duties to follow him, to be with him, to witness the great events and to learn from him. There were good times and bad times on the road but they stuck with him (well 11 of them did!). After his death and resurrection Jesus sent the remaining 11 out to ‘make disciples of all nations’ (Matthew 28:19). Not converts, not believers but disciples! So they did. It took perseverance, sacrifice and effort, but they went and made new disciples. They were committed to the process because they knew and loved Jesus Christ. We are still called to become disciples of Jesus today. Discipleship is about relationships, about a relationship with Jesus, and a relationship with others. It is through relationships that we learn and grow in our Christian faith. With that in mind we have a 5 year discipleship aim: 1) A minimum of 50% of the active adult worshipping congregation to be engaged in discipleship groups.

2) As Christians we need to encourage one another in our daily lives, read the bible together, and support each other in prayer. Will you join us as together we commit ourselves to being disciples of Jesus Christ?

When you die, 10 things GOD won't ask you:

1..... God won't ask what kind of car you drove. He'll ask how many people you drove who didn't have transportation.

.2..... God won't ask the square footage of your house, He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.

3..... God won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet. He'll ask how many you helped to clothe.

4..... God won't ask what your highest salary was. He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

5..... God won't ask what your job title was. He'll ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.

6..... God won't ask how many friends you had. He'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend.

7..... God won't ask in what neighbourhood you lived. He'll ask how you treated your neighbours.

8..... God won't ask about the colour of your skin. He'll ask about the content of your character.

9..... God won't ask why it took you so long to find Him and ask Him into your house. He'll lovingly take you to heaven and not to the gates of Hell.

10..... God won't have to ask how many people you passed this on to. He already knows your decision.

Easter Flowers

St Michael’s and St John’s always look lovely at Easter, thanks to the generosity of those who donate towards the cost in memory of loved ones.

If you would like to make this very special gesture this year, then please complete the form on the facing page and pass it with your donation to Celia Wilkinson (for Byley) or into Number 28 (for Middlewich). Please note, this is a change from previous years– Gladys is having a rest!

A list of those remembered in such a lovely way will be printed in the magazine.

A Letter from the Mothers’ union in Diocese

We acknowledge receipt of, and thank you for, your generous donation of £80.00 from the proceeds of your Christmas card charity board towards our mosquito nets Fund. This is a crucial charity which is often overlooked.

Malaria disproportionately affects poor people who cannot afford treatment, or have limited access to health care, trapping families and communities in a downward spiral of poverty. Mosquito nets create a protective barrier against deadly malaria-carrying mosquitos that bite at night. A family of four can sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net, safe from malaria, for three years. The benefits of mosquito nets extend even further than protecting those who sleep under them. The insecticide woven into each net makes entire communities safer– killing and repelling mosquitos so that they can’t go on to bite others who may not be protected by a net.

At the price of £5.00 per net, the cost is out of the reach of most people at risk of malaria, many of whom survive on less than 50p per day. Nets are a simple, life-saving solution.

Please pass on our sincere appreciation to all who contributed

Yours sincerely, Helen Elsley Assistant Diocesan Secretary.

Future branch events:

Friday, 1st March Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held at 1.30pm at the United Reform Church, Queen Street. Joan Colwell, who is known to us all very well will be the speaker at this service. Please join the ladies of Middlewich for this worldwide service.

Sunday, 10th March Mothering Sunday. As an alternative to previous years, when we gave flower arrangements to our Indoor Members or local hospitals and residential homes, we will be supporting the MU initiative, “Make a Mother’s Day”. A gift, however small, can make a real difference to a mother’s life. The aim is to empower people by sharing the skills they need to create a better life for themselves and their families. They support each other and create a better life for future generations. If you would like to make a donation, please speak to Pauline Davies.

Wednesday, 13th March There will not be a branch meeting on Tuesday, 12th but we will hold the “Wave of Prayer” on Wednesday 13th at 11.40am in church. This short service will be followed by coffee in Number 28, when we will have an opportunity to discuss our new banner and make some decisions. Please let us know what you would really like to see on our new banner – this must be a joint effort and reflect our feelings and devotions about our branch. Please remember the order of service for “Wave of Prayer” is in the winter edition of MU Matters.

Thursday, 21st March The Hot Cross Bun coffee morning will be held in Number 28 at 10.30am following mid-week Communion at 9.30am. Tickets: £1.00 each. The proceeds will go to the Mothers’ Union charities and “Save the Family”, the nominated charity for church support in the first quarter of this year. If you have any items for the raffle or table top sale, please let Miriam know.

Tuesday, 9th April We are so pleased to welcome Glenys Richardson to our April meeting. We all know Glenys so very well, ……………………or do we? She will be talking about her ‘Life and Faith in Byley’. We are in the same parish and benefit

12 from the ministry of the same clergy, so let’s get together, share our lunch and our faith. If you enjoyed making a Christmas wreath with Glenys in December, you will definitely want more of that superb experience.

Tuesday, 14th May Chester Cathedral, Diocesan Festival Eucharist at 2.00pm. Please let Miriam know if you need transport.

Middlewich Deanery Mothers’ Union

Monday, 25th March The Deanery Festival Service is to be held at Weaverham Church at 7.00pm. The transport list is now open; please phone Susan ( 01606 832148) or Miriam (01606 832583) if you would like to attend.

Each branch has contributed photographs and contact details. Please call in and view the displays when you are in the area, and try to spot Middlewich church, recent weddings and some familiar faces.

From The Middlewich Guardian January 2013

Street pastors celebrate two years of helping the Middlewich community

A GROUP of volunteers who give up part of their weekend to make sure the community is safe are celebrating their second birthday. Middlewich Street Pastors patrol the streets and pop into the town’s pubs and takeaways once a week to offer a helping hand and listening ear. During the past year, the volunteers from St Michael’s Church and Middlewich Community Church, have helped around 300 people.

“People trust us now,” said coordinator Ruth Speed. “They were a bit unsure at the beginning but they’ve realised that what they say to us is confidential. We get people coming to us now.” People are helped by street pastors for all kinds of reasons. Some may have missed the last bus or need first aid while others might need someone to talk to about loneliness or family problems. Flipflops have been donated to girls struggling to walk in their high heels and silver blankets have been wrapped around those shivering with cold. Ruth added: “Every night is different and sometimes very challenging. But it’s been really satisfying.

“We get a lot out of serving the community and we’re really well recognised now with our blue jackets.” Sixteen volunteers take it in turns to patrol the streets on three Fridays a month and one Saturday a month. Middlewich was the first town in East to pioneer the street pastor scheme and Ruth has recently helped set up a new group in which launched on December 4. By David Morgan

A modern parable

A man fell into a pit and he couldn't get out.

Buddha said: "Your pit is only a state of mind."

A Hindu said: "This pit is for purging you and making you more perfect."

Confucius said: "If you would have listened to me, you would never have fallen into that pit."

A new ager said: "Maybe you should network with some other pit dwellers."

A self-pitying person said: "You haven't seen anything until you've seen my pit."

A reporter said: "Could I have the exclusive story on your pit?"

A Tax Inspector said "Have you paid your taxes on that pit?"

A Local Authority Officer said: "Do you have a permit for that pit?"

A realist said: "That's a pit."

An idealist said: "The world shouldn't have pits."

An optimist said: "Things could be worse."

A pessimist said: "Things will get worse."

Jesus, seeing the man, took him by the hand and lifted him out of the pit, because a pit is an awful place to be -particularly the pit created by the power of sin and temptation. A Middlewich Mother

Have you noticed, outside the lady chapel door is a special tomb. The epitaph reads: “Some have children, some have none. But here lies the mother of twenty- one”. It is the tomb of Anne Barker, who died in 1778, something for the Smilers mums to think about!
