2006 TRASH Regionals Round 15 Tossups
2006 TRASH Regionals Round 15 Tossups 1. Homer Simpson has mentioned this game twice on the The Simpsons; it also got a shout out in the film Donnie Darko. Two to four people can play, assuming the role of Henry, Harry, Homer or Happy. The object is to fight against the other players to remove as many marbles from the board as possible. For ten points, name this game transformed by The Simpsons into “Ravenous Revenous Rhinos.” Answer: Hungry Hungry Hippos 2. The title object is stolen by Kara, a member of the Eymorgs, an all-female group that lives underground on Sigma Draconis 6. The Eymorgs figured out how to steal it thanks to “The Great Teacher,” a device left on the planet to help the Eymorgs understand and use technology. It was stolen to act as a controller for the central systems used by the Eymorgs, but is recovered an put back into its original owner when McCoy uses The Great Teacher to learn how. This is the basic plot of, for ten points, what notable Star Trek episode named for an organ from a certain Vulcan. Answer: “Spock’s Brain” 3. Stephen King wrote an addendum to this song and provided a cameo on Bronson Arroyo’s Covering the Bases. In the black-and-white video of the original – a parody of the Evil Dead films – the lead singer appears as a superhero with a gigantic hand. Though the band has never confirmed who the subject of the song is, many fans cite lines like “I’m over my head, out of my head” as proof that the song is about the lead singer’s former bandmate Kurt Cobain. -

KAHN* This paper reviews studies of racial and ethnic discrimination in professional sports and briefly examines gender differences in pay among professional tennis players. Many of these studies include far more extensive controls for individual ability and performance than typical studies of discrimination that use labor force data. The cited studies show evidence of salary discrimination and customer discrimina- tion against blacks in basketball, and positional segregation on the basis of race or ethnicity in baseball, football, and hockey. More limited evidence is found for the existence of salary discrimination and fan discrimination against French-Canadian hockey players and fan prefer- ences for white baseball players. -
Open Summary
Open Summary By Andre Agassi How do you muster enough determination to persevere with something that you loathe? Does passion fuel success? And, when is it too late to get off the path that's been laid out in front of you? Open is the captivating autobiography by tennis legend Andre Agassi. It's an insightful look into the life of one of the most beloved athletes of a generation, his battle with secret dragons, and his crippling identity crisis. Andre Agassi was dubbed a "punk," and the rebel of the tennis scene. Fans copied his signature look, and he made tennis "cool." However, as Agassi says, 'I'm flattered by the imitators, embarrassed, thoroughly confused. I can't imagine all these people trying to be like Andre Agassi, since I don't want to be Andre Agassi.' We'll briefly delve into Andre Agassi's fascinating story, and how he became a tennis legend that defined a generation. We'll also look at some of the book's lessons about success, determination, and true grit. Slaying the Dragon 'I hate tennis, hate it with all my heart, and still I keep playing, keep hitting all morning, and all afternoon, because I have no choice. No matter how much I want to stop, I don't. I keep begging myself to stop, and I keep playing, and this gap, this contradiction between what I want to do and what I actually do, feels like the core of my life.' Andre Agassi was born with spondylolisthesis, which is a back condition that can cause severe pain. -
