The Life of George Brooks Artist in Stone by Juanita Brooks 1965 Chapter 1 BACKGROUND AND EARLY LIFE For ages the rocky promitory on the north extremity of Wales has jutted out into the sea, to be known by the early inhabitants of the area as “The Point of Ayr.” Surrounded on three sides by water, with a low, gravelly beach at low tide, it became inundated up to several feet at high tide, and a boiling, foaming torrent in storms. It was such a hazard to seafaring men that by 1700 it was marked with a small lighthouse, erected for and supported by the merchants of Chester, far down at the end of the bay, As the city of Liverpool grew in importance, this danger spot became their concern also, for their commerce was constantly threatened by the submerged rocks. During the summer of 1963, the author, her husband, William Brooks, and her daughter, Mrs. Thales A. Derrick, visited the lighthouse here at the point of Ayr and became acquainted with a man who gave them the address of the present owner of the property, Mr. H. F. Lewis. In a letter dated August 27, 1963, he said: “. The Elder Brethren of Trinity House, who did not like privately owned lighthouses, heard of the defaulting of the Port of Chester Authority & petitioned the King in 1815 to have the jurisdiction of the L. H. Placed under their auspices. This was granted by King George III. I have this document as the first of the L. H. Deeds . “Originally the keeper lived ashore at the house still known as the Lighthouse cottage.

1413 JS&Restoratoin Sperry live 9/8/05 3:13 PM Page 109 CHAPTER SEVEN JOSEPH SMITH AND THE RESTORATION OF TEMPLE SERVICE RICHARD O. COWAN President Gordon B. Hinckley declared that “no member of the Church has received the ultimate which this Church has to give until he or she has received his or her temple blessings in the house of the Lord.”1 President Thomas S. Monson, in like spirit, affirmed that the construction of temples “is the ultimate mark of maturity” of the Church in a given area.2 In former dispensations, sacred temples had at least two major functions. First, they were regarded as places of contact between heaven and earth, or of communication between God and man (see, for example, Exodus 25:8, 22). Second, these sacred structures were also places for performing holy priesthood ordinances (see D&C 124:38). Both of these significant functions would need to be a part of the “restitution of all things” (Acts 3:21) when the Lord would “gather together in one all things” during “the dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10). Joseph Smith would be intimately involved in this restoration of temple service, and it would constitute a major contribution of his ministry. In 1823 the angel Moroni anticipated the restoration of temple service when he told Joseph Smith about the existence of the Book of Mormon record. The angelic visitor emphasized that the gospel needed to go forth so that a people might be prepared for Christ’s millennial reign.3 The angel then cited several biblical prophecies Richard O.

  • The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: a Working Hypothesis*
ORIGINAL ARTICLE Journal of Psychedelic Studies 3(2), pp. 212–260 (2019) DOI: 10.1556/2054.2019.020 The entheogenic origins of Mormonism: A working hypothesis* ROBERT BECKSTEAD1, BRYCE BLANKENAGEL2, CODY NOCONI3 and MICHAEL WINKELMAN4** 1Retired, Department of Emergency Medicine, Pocatello, ID, USA 2Naked Mormonism Podcast, Seattle, WA, USA 3Independent Researcher, Portland, OR, USA 4Retired, School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA (Received: March 19, 2019; accepted: June 8, 2019) Historical documents relating to early Mormonism suggest that Joseph Smith (1805–1844) employed entheogen- infused sacraments to fulfill his promise that every Mormon convert would experience visions of God and spiritual ecstasies. Early Mormon scriptures and Smith’s teachings contain descriptions consistent with using entheogenic material. Compiled descriptions of Joseph Smith’s earliest visions and early Mormon convert visions reveal the internal symptomology and outward bodily manifestations consistent with using an anticholinergic entheogen. Due to embarrassing symptomology associated with these manifestations, Smith sought for psychoactives with fewer associated outward manifestations. The visionary period of early Mormonism fueled by entheogens played a significant role in the spectacular rise of this American-born religion. The death of Joseph Smith marked the end of visionary Mormonism and the failure or refusal of his successor to utilize entheogens as a part of religious worship. The implications of an entheogenic origin of Mormonism may contribute to the broader discussion of the major world religions with evidence of entheogen use at their foundation and illustrate the value of entheogens in religious experience. Keywords: Joseph Smith, Mormonism, entheogen, psychedelic, spirituality INTRODUCTION early Mormon converts.

Index for Journals, Volumes 1–3 In addition to the journals themselves, introductory essays, annotation, and most refer- ence materials have been indexed. Most maps are not indexed; map coordinates for specific locations are given in the Geographical Directory. Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization of quotations have been standardized. Personal names are listed by their correct spellings, not by variant spellings that may be found in the journals, unless correct spelling is unknown. Entries for women are generally listed under their final married names, with appropriate cross-references under maiden names or earlier married names. Unidentified individuals, such as “Mr. Brown,” are included in the index. In subentry text, Joseph Smith (JS) and Emma Smith (ES) are referred to by their initials. Because JS is the implied subject of the index, the entry for his name does not report all JS-related events in the volumes. Rather, it records important events and highlights. When found in an entry, “id.” generally indicates an entry in the Biographical Directory or Geographical Directory, “def.” usually refers to a definition in the Glossary, and “hand- writing of” identifies ranges of pages on which an individual inscribed text in the journals. Other documents recorded in the journals, such as letters or revelations, are identified under the Journal entry. A of, 1:231, 1:271, 1:274, 1:275, 1:284n184; JS travels Aaronic priesthood. 22 What Old Testament Temples Can Teach Us about Our Own Temple Activity Richard O. Cowan emple worship is not unique to the present dispensation. The Lord di- Trected his people in Old Testament times to construct these holy struc- tures, and even from the beginning of this earth’s history, mortals have felt the need of establishing sacred sanctuaries where they can get away from worldly concerns and receive instruction pertaining to the eternities. Elder John A. Widtsoe believed that “all people of all ages have had temples in one form or another.” There is ample evidence, he was convinced, that from the days of Adam “there was the equivalent of temples,” that in patriarchal times “temple worship was in operation,” and that even after the Flood “in sacred places, the ordinances of the temple were given to those entitled to receive them.”1 Elder Joseph Fielding Smith likewise explained that the Lord taught the full- ness of the gospel to Adam and his posterity and gave them the law of sacrifice as a means of pointing their attention forward to his own infinite Atonement. An understanding of temple worship in Old Testament times can broaden our perspective and thus help us appreciate our own temple service even more. Richard O. Cowan is a professor of Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. 384 What Old Testament Temples Can Teach Us 385 Specifically, temples have two essential functions: “A temple . is charac- terized not alone as the place where God reveals Himself to man, but also as the House wherein prescribed ordinances of the Priesthood are solemnized.”2 The Lord Revealed Detailed Specifications for His Sacred Sanctuaries Moses’ tabernacle.
