Barber Bill Osterbuhr was ready to retire.

“I thought I was old enough. There were certain things I wanted to do yet when I’m still in good health,” he says.

So Bill’s customers had to say goodbye to him. His last day was Sept. 22. He held a reception on the second floor of the Wells’ Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor on Oct. 29 and was surprised at the number of people who attended.

But how could he be surprised when he treated his customers so well? Rosanne & Bill at Bill’s retirement party. “I considered everybody a VIP,” he notes. Being a barber seemed to be the perfect fit for Bill. But he didn’t always know wha t he wanted to do for a living. While attending Westmar he still hadn’t decided. Then a family member made a suggestion.

“My uncle Bud said, ‘Why don’t you go to barber college?’ So that’s what I did.”

After graduating from Sioux City Barber College in 1965, Bill worked until going into the army in 1966. After completing his service in 1968, he didn’t go back into barber work because it was the time of the hippies and long hair was popular. In fact, the customers are what he misses most.

One customer Bill will never forget is the Sioux County man who got his hair cut at 3 p.m. , mentioning to Bill he Tessa Owners: Michelle & Tom Jones was going to play cards that night. By 10 p.m. the man was dead. A couple of days later Bill read in the paper that the man died while playing cards. Movies Ceil Recommends Bill has completed one of his retirement plans already.
