Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality. -

Teresa Obolevitch The Pontifical University of John Paul II, Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (Krakow, Poland) Faith and Knowledge in the Thought of Georges Florovsky Georges Vasil’evich Florovsky was one of the most prominent theo- logians and philosophers of the 20th century . He is known not only in Russia, but also abroad (in Western Europe and USA), primarily as an author of the neopatristic synthesis – a project of renewing of thought of the Church Fathers in the 20th century and its adaptation to mod- ern philosophico-theological issues. In this article we will discuss the question of the relationship between knowledge and faith, philoso- phy (and science) and theology that was the integral part of the afore- mentioned synthesis . Science and religion Florovsky had been interested in philosophy and theology as well as in science since his youth . During his studies at the Historico-philo- logical Faculty of Novorossiysk University in Odessa he strove, on the one hand, to achieve the mystical unity with God, and, on the other, he undertook rational and empirical research . Amongst his professors was the positivist Nikolai Lange, and it was under his in- fluence that Florovsky criticized the speculative metaphysics deve- loped by Russian philosophers of the so-called Silver Age, such as Vladimir Solovyov, Paul Florensky, Sergey Bulgakov and others un- til the end of his days, having the opinion that philosophy “begins 198 Teresa Obolevitch with experience and explains experience.”1 His student work entitled On the Mechanism of Reflex Salivary Secretion was appreciated by professor Ivan Pavlov who recommended publishing it in English in 1917 .2 For his other work (A Critical Analysis of the Modern Con- cepts of Inferences, 1916), written under the influence of the Mar- burg School of Neo-Kantianism (H . -

Quotations from the Greek have here been transliterated. I. Revelation There are two aspects of religious knowledge: Revelation and Experience. Revelation is the voice of God speaking to man. And man hears this voice, listens to it, accepts the Word of God and understands it. It is precisely for this purpose that God speaks; that man should hear him. By Revelation in the proper sense, we understand precisely this word of God as it is heard. Holy Scripture is the written record of the Revelation which has been heard. And however one may interpret the inspired character of Scripture, it must be acknowledged that Scripture preserves for us and presents to us the voice of God in the language of man. It presents to us the word of God Just as it resounded in the receptive soul of man. Revelation is theophany. God descends to man and reveals himself to man. And man sees and beholds God. And he describes what he sees and hears; he testifies to what has been revealed to him. The greatest mystery and miracle of the Bible consists of the fact that it is the Word of God in the language of man. Quite properly the early Christian exegetes saw in the Old Testamental Scriptures an anticipa- 22 tion and prototype of the coming Incarnation of God. Father Georges Florovsky’S “The Slyness of Reason”
An Introduction to Father Georges Florovsky’s “The Slyness of Reason” I In 1920 Florovsky with other members of his family left Odessa and settled in Sophia, Bulgaria. There he along with Prince Nicholas Trubetskoy, George Vernadsky, Semeon Frank, Anton Kartashev and others became part of a group known as the Eurasians. Unlike the Slavophiles and Westerners, this small group of intellectuals sought to recover an appreciation for the contributions made by the Tatars to the Russian peoples and culture. For them Asia was a significant contributor to the “building up of a multi- national state with religious and racial tolerance as its basis.”1 Florovsky presented “The Slyness of Reason” to the Eurasians in 1921. His association with the group was brief. Not only did he reject the Eurasian acceptance of the Communist Revolution as an “organic event in the evolution” of the Eurasian people but his concern lay with the inheritance of Byzantine Orthodoxy on Russian life and culture. For Florovsky the return to an authentic Orthodoxy manifested in the life and writings of the Greek Fathers was the greatest legacy of the Russian peoples. Here it should be stressed that Florovsky’s interest and passion for the Greek Fathers provided the escape from pre-determined and closed philosophical systems that deprived the human person of ultimate freedom and sobornost within the context of history and eschatology. book reviews 403 Ambrose Mong Purification of Memory: A Study of Orthodox Theologians from a Catholic Perspective (Cambridge: James Clarke, 2015), 212 pp. isbn 97890227175132 (pbk). £25.00/ $50.00. Many Western theologians have been fascinated by Orthodox theology since the 1920s, after the arrival of leading Russian intellectuals in Western Europe and the establishment of the Saint Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. Ambrose Mong’s study of eight major Orthodox theological figures of the twen- tieth century is thus situated in a long tradition. Mong, a Asian Dominican, follows in the footsteps of another Dominican, Aidan Nichols, a well-known British theologian, who published a similar book, studying eleven Orthodox theologians, under the title Light from the East: Authors and Themes in Ortho- dox Theology (1995). Inevitably, the books overlap in the theologians studied: both tackle Nicholas Afanasiev, Sergius Bulgakov, Georges Florovsky, Vladimir Lossky and John Meyendorff. Mong also considers Nicholas Berdiaev, John Zizioulas and Jaroslav Pelikan; and Nichols includes Paul Evdokimov, Panay- iotis Nellas, John Romanides, Alexander Schmemann, Panayiotis Trembelas and Christos Yannaras. Nichols’ book is now somewhat dated, but is still a valu- able reference work on the authors and themes studied. The perspectives of the two Dominicans is different. Nichols limits his study to one judiciously selected major theme for each author, for example apopha- tism in Lossky, neo-Palamism in Meyendorff, sophiology in Bulgakov, and tra- dition in Florovsky. Nichols thus manages to cover most of the main themes in modern Orthodox theology. Mong covers several issues for each author and compares the thinking of Orthodox and Roman Catholic or Protestant theo- logians on certain issues. -

The Life and Mission of St. Paisius Velichkovsky. 1722–1794. An Early Mod- ern Master of the Orthodox Spiritual Life John A. MCGuckin Many people today have become familiar with the figure of the Russian Pilgrim. The book, The Way of a Pilgrim purports to have been written as the 157 autobiographical record of a poor and barely educated Russian peasant of the 19th century. Treading his way across the Steppes, enduring countless hardships and adventures as he persevered, gripped only with the reading of his beloved book of the spiritual writers of the Early Church, he directed all his mental energies around the countless recitation: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” This famous story is designed to advocate how the prayer of the heart can happen if one wills it: a mystical transitioning from prayer on the lips, to prayer in the mind, to prayer of the heart: namely, prayer in the deepest levels of the human spirit’s personal communion with the Risen Christ. The work in its English translation had a remarkable resonance in 20th century Europe and America; so much so, that nowadays if one asks about the spirituality of the pilgrim, most would think first of Russia and its mystical tra- dition of the Jesus Prayer, and perhaps hardly at all of the Puritans! The book’s popularity was helped along, doubtless, by its starred appearance in J.D. Salin- ger’s Franny and Zooey in 1961. It first came out in 1884 in a Russian version entitled: “Candid Tales of a Pilgrim to His Spiritual Father.” In all likelihood it emanated originally from the St. -
