This reviewer participated in a conference in Milan almost ten years ago that bore the name … Lucrezio e la modernità; Catherine Wilson, a contributor to the volume under review, published a book around the same time entitled Epicureanism at the origins of modernity.1 Several important edited volumes on the reception of Epicureanism have appeared since then, some with a more exclusively scholarly focus,2 some more receptive to the inflections of ‘Theory’. The latter trend is not monolithic either, since some projects bear the mark of the late Althusser’s idiosyncratic re- imagining of a Lucretian ‘aleatory materialism’,3 while others locate themselves in the territory of Deleuze’s or Michel Serres’s revival of Lucretius,4 the latter being perhaps the first of a series of studies fixated on the clinamen, culminating with S. Greenblatt’s The Swerve.5 These interpretive trends are touched on in David Norbrook’s elegant introduction to this volume. The present volume is less concerned with subterranean, counter-histories of philosophy (or politics, or literature); it focuses on De rerum natura (hereafter DRN)’s ‘language and material circulation, as a means of refining generalizations about Epicurean philosophy’ (2), on ‘the specific material and cultural contexts in which the DRN was interpreted’ in early modern culture (12). -

Author considered R-Synthesis as a method for the evaluation of the philosophy, philosophy of science, sciences and branches of science. -

ABSTRACT To Teach, Move, Meditate, and Oppose: Lucy Hutchinson’s Rhetoric in Order and Disorder Christina Iluzada, B.A., Ph.D. Mentor: Phillip J. Donnelly, Ph.D. Lucy Hutchinson’s biblical poetic paraphrase, Order and Disorder, employs rhetorical strategies that enable her to teach and move her audience, meditate for her own spiritual benefit, and oppose the atomistic doctrine of Lucretius. In this dissertation, I begin to examine the poem using a rhetorical analysis that draws upon the Aristotelian causes as a framework. The poem’s final cause is to persuade Dissenting readers to trust and praise divine Providence and to pursue virtue; its formal cause is a type of plain style that relies upon tropes and sparingly employs schemes; and its material cause is the biblical story that the poem paraphrases, while weaving other biblical texts, images, and ideas into the Genesis narrative. This analysis of Hutchinson’s Non-Conformist rhetoric sheds light on the Calvinist Dissenter plain style, demonstrating how her interpretive strategies align with her Biblicism and distinguish her writing from Enlightenment rationalist notions of “plain.” It also reads the poem as a meditation, showing that Hutchinson’s rhetoric functions both to persuade herself as well as her Dissenting readers in the midst of difficult political and personal circumstances in the aftermath of the Restoration. This analysis of the character of Non-Conformist rhetoric highlights the various ways in which Hutchinson’s poem contests Lucretius’s atomism and epistemology. This study sketches a more thorough picture of Hutchinson’s rhetorical aesthetic than scholars have yet completed. It demonstrates that this seventeenth-century woman’s biblical epic poem places her in the position of not only a poet but also a teacher of doctrine, a rhetorician who moves her audience, a private Christian meditating on Scripture for the sake of her own soul, and an intellectual who directly counters Lucretian philosophy. -

I expend the first chapter carefully reconstructing Spinoza's position on infinity and time. We see that Spinoza developed a threefold definition ofinfinity to explain the difference between active substance and its passive modes. Spinoza advances a syncategorematic interpretation ofinfinity, and founds a causal theory oftime directly on this conception ofinfinity. In the second chapter, I examine the changes Leibniz's understanding ofthe continuum problem underwent during 1676 and immediately thereafter. During this period, Leibniz's interacted extensively with Spinoza's ideas. We see that several fundamental features ofLeibniz's philosophy oftime take shape at this time. Leibniz adopts a Spinozistic definition ofdivine eternity and immensity, he reevaluates several analogies in an attempt to understand how the attributes ofa substance interrelate, and he develops the notion ofthe law of the series that will become an essential feature ofmonadic appetition. Leibniz synthesizes several ofthese discoveries into a first philosophy ofmotion. -

Embodied Female Authorship in Early Modern English Literature
SHOOK, LAUREN, Ph.D. Embodied Female Authorship in Early Modern English Literature. (2015) Directed by Dr. Michelle M. Dowd. 247 pp. Although early modern scholars often believe the female body to hinder women’s authorship, my dissertation, Embodied Female Authorship in Early Modern English Literature, argues that the female body enables authorship. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, authorship and its related terms, “author” and “authority,” were never static. Such malleability resonated with early modern perceptions of the female body as inherently shifty, a troubling notion to patriarchal ideologies that desired authority over women. Constituting male authorship through the female body was a way to stabilize masculine authority. Men became authors while women remained passive texts. My project, however, disrupts this patriarchal narrative of authorship. Drawing upon scholarship by Jeffrey Masten, Wendy Wall, and Margaret Ezell that rethinks early modern authorship as gendered, collaborative, and social, I shift focus away from the physical production of texts to consider authorship in terms of the generation of narratives--textual, historical, political, and theological. I examine common tropes of the female body (maternal body, female martyr, wife’s corpse, and female ghost) to restore “author” as a verb rather than a noun. Doing so historicizes female authorship as integral to gender, political, and religious hierarchies. Covering a wide generic breadth of texts ranging from the early Reformation to the Restoration (1546-1664), my project provides nuanced close-readings of women’s and men’s writing to illuminate the ubiquitous nature of embodied female authorship throughout early modern culture. My first chapter uses the metaphor of the pregnant male wit who labors to birth literary creations to re-read representations of the maternal body as producers of theological narratives in midwife manuals, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Dorothy Leigh’s The Mother’s Blessing. -

Materialism and “the soft substance of the brain”: the case of Diderot Charles T. Wolfe Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences Sarton Centre for History of Science Ghent University Longer draft (2015) of paper forthcoming in British Journal of History of Philosophy (a number of additional citations appear in published version) Abstract Materialism is the view that everything that is real, is material or is the product of material processes. It tends to take either a ‘cosmological’ form, as a claim about the ultimate nature of the world, or a more specific ‘psychological’ form, detailing how mental processes are brain processes. I focus on the second, psychological or cerebral form of materialism. In the mid-to-late eighteenth century, the French materialist philosopher Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was one of the first to notice that any self-respecting materialist had to address the question of the status and functional role of the brain, and its relation to our mental, affective, intellectual life. After this the topic grew stale, with knee-jerk reiterations of ‘psychophysical identity’ in the nineteenth-century, and equally rigid assertions of anti-materialism. In 1960s philosophy of mind, brain-mind materialism reemerged as ‘identity theory’, focusing on the identity between mental processes and cerebral processes. In contrast, Diderot’s cerebral materialism allows for a more culturally sedimented sense of the brain, which he describes in his late Elements of Physiology as a “book – except it is a book which reads itself”. Diderot thus provides a lesson for materialism as it reflects on the status of the brain, science and culture. -

Philosophy of film has been in upheaval since the early days of digital post- production effects and manipulation in the 1980s. Although shot and released on celluloid, many feature films of the 1990s were transferred to video in a process known as telecine. Telecine effectively turned the film image into an analog video image which could then be digitized and ingested into a computer for post-production editing and visual effects. Concurrent rapid innovations in non-linear editing software and hardware dramatically accelerated the post-production editing process, while decreasing costs and increasing profits for film studios. End-to-end digital filmmaking gained industry credibility when George Lucas embraced digital for his 1999 release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The film was partially recorded on digital cameras, edited and composited on computers and distributed digitally to select movie theaters.1 ! ! As technologies continued to mature and cinema became increasingly digital, film philosophy entered a crisis. Classical film theories that depend upon the acknowledged indexical relationship of an analog photo to its referent in reality were unable to accommodate the move to digital. This quandary has renewed interest in these classical theories, returning them to the forefront of film philosophy.! ! Lev Manovich, a preeminent digital media philosopher, has posited that cinema has been fundamentally changed by cinema’s digital revolution.
