8Th Grade Commencement
ELA GRADE LEVEL OVERVIEWS GRADE 8 INTRODUCTION | GRADE 8 The Grade 8 Core ELA Units take students through literary and nonfiction texts that explore how individuals are affected by their choices, their relationships, and the world around them. In Unit 1, Everyone Loves a Mystery, students will try to determine what attracts us to stories of suspense. Unit 2, Past and Present, asks the Essential Question: What makes you, you? Unit 3, No Risk, No Reward, asks students to consider why we take chances, while Unit 4, Hear Me Out, asks students to consider the unit’s driving question—How do you choose the right words?—by providing a range of texts that allow students to consider how a person’s words can affect an audience. Next, Unit 5’s Trying Times asks students to think about who they are in a crisis. Finally, students finish up the year with an examination of science fiction and fantasy texts as they think about the question “What do other worlds teach us about our own?” in Unit 6, Beyond Reality. 2 ELA Grade Level Overview | GRADE 8 ELA Grade Level Overview Grade 8 Text Complexity 3 ELA Grade Level Overview | GRADE 8 UNIT 1 TEXT COMPLEXITY UNIT 1: EVERYONE LOVES A MYSTERY Unit Title: Everyone Loves a Mystery Essential Question: What attracts us to the mysterious? Genre Focus: Fiction Overview Hairs rising on the back of your neck? Lips curling up into a wince? Palms a little sweaty? These are tell-tale signs that you are in the grips of suspense. But what attracts us to mystery and suspense? We may have wondered what keeps us from closing the book or changing the channel when confronted with something scary, or compels us to experience in stories the very things we spend our lives trying to avoid. -
1 Themes of Nature: Body, Spirit, Place and a Collection of Poems
1 Themes of Nature: Body, Spirit, Place and a collection of poems Finding The Room William Henry Searle Royal Holloway University of London English Department PhD Creative Writing 2 Declaration of Authorship I …William Searle…………………. (please insert name) hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: __William Searle____________________ Date: ___29/08/12_____________________ 3 Abstract The thesis explores three themes, - Body, Spirit, Place, – that are fundamental to my own poetry collection, Finding The Room. Taken together, my poetry and the thesis form a comprehensive understanding of the human subject’s relation to the natural world, and aim towards a redifintion of human subjectivity. In chapter one, through a phenomenological inquiry into the poetry of Ted Hughes, the primordial unity between the body and the natural world is explored. Born out of the intercorporeal rapport between body and world is the Natural Self which perceives itself to be interwoven into its sensuous surroundings, sharing its flesh with the flesh of the world. Out of the primordial coherence between the human body and the body of the earth, occurs the genesis of sacredness, leading on to chapter two which explores the nature-mysticism of R.S. Thomas whose spirituality is presented as being enrooted in an incorporeal bond between body and world. In chapter two it is argued that spirituality is grounded in the actuality of the intercorporeal fusion between body and world, and that the numinous reveals itself through the earth to those that, like R.S. -

(HeLa cells are examined) PLEASE... HAVE A GLIMPSE OF IMMORTALITY A HeLa cell is a cell type in an immortal cell line used in scientific research. It is the oldest and most commonly used human cell line. The line was derived from cervical cancer cells taken on February 8, 1951 from Henrietta Lacks, a patient who eventually died of her cancer on October 4, 1951. The cell line was found to be remarkably durable and prolific as illustrated by its contamination of many other cell lines used in research. The cells were propagated by George Otto Gey shortly before Lacks died of her cancer in 1951. This was the first human cell line to prove successful in vitro, which was a scientific achievement with profound future benefit to medical research. This means HeLa were the first cells to reproduce themselves outside the human body. Gey freely donated both the cells and the tools and processes his lab developed to any scientist requesting them, simply for the benefit of science. Neither Lacks nor her family gave Lacks's physician permission to harvest the cells, but, at that time, permission was neither required nor customarily sought. HeLa cells, are termed "immortal" in that they can divide an unlimited number of times in a laboratory cell culture plate as long as fundamental cell survival conditions are met (i.e. -

Abstract Atuire, Martin Anbegwon (M.F.A. English, Creative Writing) Broken Horn Bull A Collection of Essays Thesis directed by Associate Professor Marcia Douglas I am a native Buli speaker and belong to the second generation of Bulsa who had the chance to obtain formal education in English. None of my grandparents, and hardly anyone from their generation had the opportunity to go to school. The first schools were established by the British beginning with my father’s generation. My mother never had the opportunity to go to school. She was therefore non-literate in English and Buli. During the colonial era, schools were mostly in the southern part of Ghana while the north, where I come from, was mostly left alone to its native ways and native forms of education. With such background I find myself as a writer working at a very interesting and exciting time in the history of our language and narrative forms. -

Come with me. A generation ago, the astronomer Carl Sagan stood here and launched hundreds of millions of us on a great adventure: the exploration of the universe revealed by science. It's time to get going again. We're about to begin a journey that will take us from the infinitesimal to the infinite, from the dawn of time to the distant future. We'll explore galaxies and suns and worlds, surf the gravity waves of space-time, encounter beings that live in fire and ice, explore the planets of stars that never die, discover atoms as massive as suns and universes smaller than atoms. Cosmos is also a story about us. It's the saga of how wandering bands of hunters and gatherers found their way to the stars, one adventure with many heroes. -

Greetings! David Cross J. Cameron My name is Naomi! Fryer much of a pleasure it has been to William Chaplar John Lee Bodessa spend my summer reading your Chris Lockridge Chad Lawson poetry! I am currently a Cornell Robert Hambrick William Chaplair student, and back in May I was Paul Washburn Lysander White clueless on what I would spend my A Story That Should Be Told.4-8 Tim Hampton summer doing. However, I am so glad Tim Hampton Billy Lively I literally stumbled upon the Prisoner Jackey R. Sollars Ansen Stowers Express program. This program Robert Hambrick Santos Peña introduced me to a community of Eric Bederson Lucio Urenda people whose voices are silenced, William Miles Frank Johnson III whose humanity is often forgotten, James E. This program allowed me Eric Benderson Entrapment……………17-19 to hear your voices, to see your Eric Remerowski Vincent Garcia humanity. In particular, working with Ryan Collier Ray Charles Gary the poetry program renewed my love Ted Eason Tom Stone and respect for the art of poetry.
