Resumo Esta pesquisa é uma introdução à obra do poeta inglês William Wordsworth (1770-1850). Ela se estrutura em seis capítulos, divididos em dois eixos paralelos. Os capítulos de número par são voltados exclusivamente a obras do poeta: o primeiro é sobre o livro Baladas líricas (1798), analisado em contraponto com o cenário da poesia inglesa da época. O segundo é sobre o poema conhecido como “Tintern Abbey”, e se volta mais detalhadamente à singularidade do autor, passando por questões teóricas sobre a representação do pensamento na poesia e a invenção do “eu” no poema. O último capítulo da série é sobre o livro O prelúdio (1805/1850), autobiografa do poeta; o capítulo é uma breve discussão sobre o que são livros. O segundo eixo — o dos capítulos de número ímpar —, compõe um ambiente para a leitura do poeta: são retratos de pessoas que participaram de seu círculo íntimo. O primeiro é sobre sua irmã, Dorothy Wordsworth, e os diários que escrevia; o segundo, sobre o poeta S.T. Abstract This dissertation is an introduction to the works of William Wordsworth (1770-1850). It is divided into six chapters, organized under two main lines. Chapters 2, 4 and 6 focus exclusively on William Wordsworth’s poems: chapter 2 discussing the Lyrical Ballads (1798) in comparison to the different literatures of the period; chapter 4 focusing on “Tintern Abbey” and the poet’s uniqueness, while at the same time researching the modes of thought that occur in poetry, and the invention of the poetic “I”. The last chapter of this triad focuses on the author’s autobiography, The prelude (1805/1850); it is a short text, concerned with the notion of what books are. The second triad — chapters 1, 3 and 5 — creates an environment for the reading of the poems: three portraits of people who were part of the poet’s circle of friends and infuences. The frst one is on the poet’s sister, Dorothy Wordsworth, and on her diary-writing. The second one is on S.T. Coleridge, who co-wrote the Lyrical Ballads. Pois inúmeras causas, antes desconhecidas, estão agora unindo forças para embotar os poderes discriminatórios da mente, tornando-a inapta para qualquer esforço voluntário, de modo a reduzi-la a um estado de entorpecimento quase bestial. De todas as causas, as mais efcazes são os grandes eventos nacionais que ocorrem diariamente e o crescente acúmulo de homens nas cidades, onde a uniformidade de suas ocupações produz um anseio por incidentes extraordinários, incidentes que a velocidade da troca de informações gratifca de hora em hora.1 Olhando agora, fca muito claro para nós que, se o problema das pessoas era o torpor provocado pelo avanço da urbanização, pelos trabalhos ingratos e a midiatização da vida, o problema não foi remediado.2 Wordsworth escrevia poemas como quem sussurra: fazia parte de seu projeto poético e político não se exaltar. Havia, como veremos, um ímpeto redentor nisso. Mas num sentido muito literalista o projeto de Wordsworth fracassou, e nós não fomos redimidos. Como, afnal, parece ter acontecido com tantos projetos de sua época — ele viveu a Revolução Francesa e nós hoje nos perguntamos se a democracia não estaria chegando ao fm. Mas essa leitura de Wordsworth é muito redutora e, no fundo, descabida diante da função e do poder dos poetas. Na juventude, Wordsworth envolveu-se com o pensamento político da França e acreditou na Revolução: [...] foi uma época em que a Europa celebrava: […] ’twas a time when Europe was rejoiced, A França estava no ápice de suas horas de ouro

Introduction ‘At the close of the year 1794, a clever young man, of the Society of Friends, of the name of Robert Lovell, who had married a Miss Fricker, informed me that a few friends of his from Oxford and Cambridge, with himself, were about to sail to America, and, on the banks of the Susquehannah, to form a Social Colony, in which there was to be a community of property, and where all that was selfish was to be proscribed.’1 Thus wrote Bristol publisher Joseph Cottle in his Reminiscences published in 1847. As any serious student of Romanticism knows, the most important of those ‘few friends’ mentioned by Cottle were Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who were then gathering support for a small-scale transatlantic emigration scheme founded on radical egalitarian or so-called ‘Pantisocratic’ principles. It is chiefly in connection with this utopian venture that the ‘clever young man’ described by Cottle has, until now, typically featured in Romantic criticism, very much in a supporting if not peripheral role. But how much do we know about Robert Lovell? What kind of person was he? Why did Southey, and subsequently Coleridge, embrace him enthusiastically on first acquaintance and later downgrade their estimate of his qualities? What was Lovell’s achievement as a poet, and what was his place in the early history of Romanticism in the South West? In this essay I attempt to answer these questions by re- examining established ‘facts’, gathering fresh evidence, and treating Lovell and his poetry as valid subjects in their own right rather than as a footnote to the budding careers of Coleridge and Southey.

My concern here is not only with some examples of that oblique reaction but with language generally, and with the manner in which the growing questioning of authority during the period reflected a more profound alteration, taking place over a much longer period – a movement from what might be termed the language of fidelity to the cultivation of dialects that could be regarded as more critically oriented. To put the matter another way, whereas in medieval times writers had been so close to the religion of their surrounding culture that they did not need to think about the possible religious implications of their language, by the middle of the twentieth century, they would have become so self-conscious and self-critical that they could not write anything containing such implications and not be aware of possible commenting voices ranging from the harshly critical to the warmly favourable. The 1790s, I shall maintain, provided a crucial juncture for this development. In addition, however, attention may be drawn to recent emphases in the writing of history by which the possibility of concentrating on a small and particular detail and expanding one’s attention from there can be explored, or, alternately, one may begin by proceeding to the widest possible extreme and moving inward.

He is the author of numerous articles in the field of Constitutional and Administrative law and Employment law and of the leading monograph Street Trading and Markets and Fairs (Boston, UK, 1994). Barry Hough is also a contributor to four editions of J. Alder, Constitutional and Administrative Law (Basingstoke and New York) and to William Blake Odgers (ed.), High Court Pleading & Practice (London, 1991). Howard Davis is Reader in Public Law at Bournemouth University. As well as law and literature his other research and teaching interests relate to constitutional law and human rights, in particular the reception of European human rights law through the Human Rights Act 1998. His textbook, Human Rights Law Directions (Oxford, 2009) is now in its second edition. Michael John Kooy is Associate Professor at the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at Warwick University. His main research interests lie in British and European Romanticism, especially Coleridge, and in the relationship between philosophy and literature. Kooy is the author of Coleridge, Schiller and Aesthetic Education (Basingstoke and New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2002) and he is currently completing a book called Coleridge and War, which assesses Coleridge’s wartime activities as a journalist and poet in relation to his political theology. Lydia Davis took her degree in Latin and Ancient History at Edinburgh University.

    Saving Sarah Fricker: Accurately Representing the Realities of the Coleridges’ Marriage Saving Sarah Fricker: Accurately Representing the Realities of the Coleridges’ Marriage Cori Mathis Abstract The Lake Poets circle was prolific; they wrote letters to each other constantly, leaving a clear picture of the beginning and eventual decline of the marriage between Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Sarah Fricker Coleridge. Coleridge also was fond of chronicling his personal life in his work. Coleridge’s poetry and prose clearly show that, though he may have come to regret it, he originally married Sarah Fricker for love and was very happy in the beginning of their relationship. The problem with their marriage was that they were just fundamentally incompatible, something that was not Sarah Fricker’s fault—she was a product of her society and simply unprepared to be a wife to someone like Coleridge. Unfortunately, scholars have taken Coleridge’s letters as pure truth and seem to have forgotten that every marriage has two partners, both with their own perspectives. This reflects a deliberate ignorance of Coleridge’s tendency to see situations quite differently from how they actually were. Because of this tradition, Sarah Fricker Coleridge is often portrayed as difficult at best and a harridan at worst. It does not help that she attempted to help her husband’s reputation by the majority of their letters that she possessed—one cannot see her side as clearly. In this essay, I hope to prove that she was simply an unhappy wife, married to a poetic genius who had decided she was the impediment to his happiness while she only wanted to keep their family together and safe.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the role of women at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in its first decade and contributes to the field by writing more women into the history of science. Using the method of prosopography, 844 women have been identified as subscribers to the Royal Institution from its founding on 7 March 1799, until 10 April 1812, the date of the last lecture given by the chemist Humphry Davy (1778- 1829). Evidence suggests that around half of Davy’s audience at the Royal Institution were women from the upper and middle classes. This female audience was gathered by the Royal Institution’s distinguished patronesses, who included Mary Mee, Viscountess Palmerston (1752-1805) and the chemist Elizabeth Anne, Lady Hippisley (1762/3-1843). A further original contribution of this thesis is to explain why women subscribed to the Royal Institution from the audience perspective. First, Linda Colley’s concept of the “service élite” is used to explain why an institution that aimed to apply science to the “common purposes of life” appealed to fashionable women like the distinguished patronesses. These women were “rulers of opinion,” women who could influence their peers and transform the image of a degenerate ruling class to that of an élite that served the nation.

    ABSTRACT Genius, Heredity, and Family Dynamics. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his Children: A Literary Biography Yolanda J. Gonzalez, Ph.D. Chairperson: Stephen Prickett, Ph.D. The children of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Hartley, Derwent, and Sara, have received limited scholarly attention, though all were important nineteenth century figures. Lack of scholarly attention on them can be blamed on their father, who has so overshadowed his children that their value has been relegated to what they can reveal about him, the literary genius. Scholars who have studied the children for these purposes all assume familial ties justify their basic premise, that Coleridge can be understood by examining the children he raised. But in this case, the assumption is false; Coleridge had little interaction with his children overall, and the task of raising them was left to their mother, Sara, her sister Edith, and Edith’s husband, Robert Southey. While studies of S. T. C.’s children that seek to provide information about him are fruitless, more productive scholarly work can be done examining the lives and contributions of Hartley, Derwent, and Sara to their age. This dissertation is a starting point for reinvestigating Coleridge’s children and analyzes their life and work. Taken out from under the shadow of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, we find that Hartley was not doomed to be a “child of romanticism” as a result of his father’s experimental approach to his education; rather, he chose this persona for himself. Conversely, Derwent is the black sheep of the family and consciously chooses not to undertake the family profession, writing poetry.

    Essay title: Romantic Poetry and Victorian Nonsense Poetry: Some Directions of Travel Name: Peter Swaab Email: [email protected] Postal address: Dept of English, UCL, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT Abstract: This essay explores links between Victorian nonsense poetry and poetry of the Romantic period, with a focus on narratives of quest, voyaging and escape. It discusses brief instances from various writers of the two periods and moves on to a more developed comparison between Wordsworth and Edward Lear, centring on ‘The Blind Highland Boy’. The comparison between periods leads to an argument that self- critique and scepticism were quite robustly in place from the start in the romantic period, and that obstacles to sense could at times be experienced not just as perplexity but as enjoyment shared with an audience. It also points to a further appreciation of some of the less canonical works by the most canonical writers, and suggests a tradition in which romantic aspiration was often coolly linked to a sense of absurdity. Keywords: romanticism, nonsense poetry, quests, voyages, romantic Victorianism 1 Romantic Poetry and Victorian Nonsense Poetry: Some Directions of Travel Peter Swaab We are used to asking what was Victorian about nonsense writing, but this essay takes the slightly different approach of asking what was Romantic about it. Various thematic and generic links suggest themselves as possible approaches. First, we might say that nonsense brings a cooling comic self-consciousness to many of the dramas of romanticism – for instance those involving childhood, isolation, utopian dreams, travel and imperialism. In exploring sublimity, nonsense always grounds it in absurdity, chiefly the absurdity of love in Edward Lear, and of meaning in Lewis Carroll.

The three men embarked on a tour of Wordsworth’s beloved Lake Country, but on October 30, at Greta Bridge, Cottle left the party and travelled south. ‘It was a tactful departure’, notes Mary Moorman, ‘Wordsworth and Coleridge wanted to be by themselves’.1 That leave-taking has a symbolic value: it marks the birth of the Lake School of Romantic poetry, and yet Joseph Cottle, the man so brusquely dismissed by Moorman, staked a claim to have originated that school himself, and not in the Lake District but some 250 miles to the South, in Bristol: Many might think it no small honour (without the slightest tincture of vanity) to have been the friend, in early life, of such men as Southey, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Lamb: to have encouraged them in their first productions, and to have published, as it respects each of them, his first Volume of Poems. Typically, this is not quite accurate,2 but it was, as Cottle rightly insisted, ‘a distinction that might never occur again to a Provincial bookseller.’3 It seemed to Cottle an ‘extraordinary circumstance that Mr. Coleridge in his “Biographia Literaria” should have passed over in silence, all distinct reference to Bristol, the cradle of his literature, and for many years his favourite abode.’4 He was moved to publish his Early Recollections to correct Coleridge’s omission, to celebrate a period in the life of his city when ‘so many men of genius were there congregated, as to justify the designation, ‘The Augustan Age of Bristol,”5 and, with pardonable egotism, to remind the reading public of his own status as the provincial west-country Maecenas.

Poems is . to make those events which in real or imagined History move in a strait [sic] Line, assume to our Understandings a circular motion” (CL 4: 545). Coleridge’s so-called “Conversation” poems seem to conform most conspicuously to this aesthetic theory, structured as they are to return to their starting points at their conclusions. The assumption, however, that this comforting circular structure is commensurate with the sense of these poems can be questioned, for the conclusions of the “Conversation” poems are rarely, if ever, reassuring. The formal circularity of these poems is frequently achieved more by persuasive rhetoric than by any cohesion of elements. The circular structure encourages the reader’s expectations of unity and synthesis, but ultimately these expectations are disappointed, and instead the reader is surprised by an ending more troubling than the rhetoric of return and reassurance would suggest. Taking three “Conversation” poems as case studies (“The Eolian Harp,” “This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison,” and “Frost at Midnight”), this thesis attempts to explicate those tensions which exist in the “Conversation” poems between form and effect, between structure and sense.

    1 17 September 2019 Gas and Poetry: Humphry Davy in Bristol, 1798-1801 Frank A.J.L. James University College London* http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0499-9291 This paper is a contribution, historically grounded, to current discussions about how best to understand the relations of science and literature as cultural and social practices. It examines, in some detail, Humphry Davy’s activities during the two and a half years, from the autumn of 1798 to the spring of 1801, that he worked at Thomas Beddoes’s Medical Pneumatic Institution in Bristol. The loose and ever- changing circle of creative individuals who formed around Beddoes and his Institution involved a formidable array of savants including members of the Watt and Wedgwood families as well as Romantics such as Southey, Coleridge and Wordsworth. The micro-chronological approach adopted here reveals the importance of print culture and sociability in the production of texts and knowledge, as well as the striking number and variety of projects proposed by the circle that never came to fruition. Nevertheless, those successful projects, such as Davy’s work on nitrous oxide and the second edition of Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads, contributed to making this period one of the key moments in English cultural history.
