They will advertize your sale and the staff will be in every room to assist with sales. Within a few days after the sale they will send you a certified letter with a cashier’s check for 65% of the sale with an outline of the items sold and a receipt. Left over items can be kept by you, donated to Family Promise for our homeless families or given to the charity of your choice. The 35% commission to Family Promise will be used to help homeless families achieve self-sufficiency and regain a home for themselves and their children.

If you would like more details you can look for the brochure in the narthex or call the Family Promise Day Center at 443-3107. The Executive Director, Marsha Spell, will be visiting our church in September along with a successful graduate to inform us about the progress of Family Promise of Sacramento.

Pastor’s Column Senior’s Banquet Pastor Quinn Vaughn

Celebration is so beautiful, especially at the end of a long journey together. Every May for the last fifteen years the Crew Advisors and Youth Pastors (in particular Cindy Canaday and Pat Tatro) have been hosting a Senior Banquet to honor Graduating Seniors.

The vision started fifteen plus years ago with Cindy Canaday and Cheryl Finch. The details of how this all started are hazy, but the legacy is clear; to mark in the Seniors’ and Youth Workers’ lives that “God has brought us thus far” together. The Senior Banquet serves as an Ebenezer of sorts (not Ebeneezer Scrouge, rather a “stone of help”) to celebrate that “thus far the Lord has helped us”(1 Samuel 7:12). Whether the forerunners of this Senior Banquet knew they were falling in line with Samuel (who set up an Ebenezer to mark the Israelite's victory against impossible odds) or Jesus (who loved a good celebration) is beside the point. Their vision has served to mark an important time in the youth's faith journey.

At the four Senior Banquets I have attended I have eaten food prepared with love, drunk drinks chilled with care and sat at a table set with joy, but that is not what makes this night so special; it’s that Jesus is present with us. Cindy and Pat are adamant about this night being a night of program but simply a night to be together at the end of a long road traveled. Doesn’t that sound like Jesus!

As I said, celebration is so beautiful, especially at the end of a long journey together. Now, I should correct myself here. The journey with these students is not over; it is just taking a different road. These students need us just as much after graduation as they do before it. They may be graduating from high school but they are never graduating from God’s school or God's unfolding story.

We are all in God’s school and story for the rest of our lives and He is the best, most persistent, wise and good teacher of all, who in His great wisdom has given us each other. So, reach out to a high school graduate and college student. Let them know they will never graduate from our Faith Family. Ask them “what do you sense God is up to now?” Thanks Cindy and Cheryl for starting such a wonderful tradition and thanks to all those who keep it going!

Abaya Update! Faith-funded Water Project Underway In recent news from Abaya, Ethiopia, we have learned that the $20,000 water project which was funded by the generous donations of a few Faith individuals earlier this year is underway. This photo shows a portion of the project. When completed, the project will provide clean drinking water to nearly 5000 people in the village of Odomka. This is a project which, no doubt, will save countless lives in the days to come!

As we continue our partnership with Abaya through World Vision, one of the best ways we can be of support is through prayer. Recently Aynalem Mekuria, the director from the Abaya Area Development Project e- mailed us these prayer requests:

1. Pray for the continued health of our World Vision staff in Abaya 2. Pray that the Abaya community would be receptive and understanding of our efforts for development 3. Pray for the successful accomplishment of our development activites, including this water project.

How exciting it is to see that God is uniting us as partners with these faithful brothers and sisters to work towards the elimination of extreme poverty among children and families in this area of our world.

Hope Sunday Coming in July By: Rudy Buehler

More than 8,000 miles separate Faith Church and the people of Abaya, Ethiopia. But in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. Since we began our relationship and ministry with Abaya in the summer of 2010, our congregation has sponsored more than 75 children and sent more than $20,000 to help improve their lives, both physically and spiritually. At the same time, we have grown in our understanding of what God calls us to do for our brothers and sisters around the world.

Join us on Sunday, July 31st to celebrate our ongoing relationship and ministry with the people of Abaya, Ethiopia. The service – called Hope Sunday – will devote time to celebrate what God has done in the past year, pray for our community and Abaya’s, and honor those who are working for Abaya through child sponsorships.

On Hope Sunday, we will also kick off a new fundraising effort to help build a school for the children of the Abaya region. We already have $20,000 donated to the school and we are hoping to triple, even quadruple, that number by the end of August. Please consider contributing to the building of this school. It could bring much- needed education to hundreds of children.

For questions about the school effort or Hope Sunday, contact Mission Elder Rudy Buehler at (916) 376-7079 or [email protected].

Greetings from Albania! By Natalie Reyes

The Chapman family and I arrived in Albania on June 21st and took a 6 hour taxi ride from Tirana, the capital city, to Erseke which is in Southern Albania near the Greek Border. In Erseke is the Crossroads summer camp which is run by Torchbearers International, a Christian organization, and is directed by Mark Stocher, a childhood friend of Jeff. The camp serves over 1,000 Albanian children and kids from surrounding countries like Kosovo and Macedonia in the summer, and is a Bible School for young adults in the fall and spring. I have a German roommate named Anna who attended the Bible school in the spring and is now a summer camp counselor, so she has been here for 6 months! Other counselors have also attended the Bible school in the past and have returned to be counselors for the summer. About half of the camp staff speak English while the other half only speak Albanian, so I have begun to learn some important Albanian words like "shume mire" meaning "very good" and "faleminderit" meaning "thank you". The young campers will most likely only speak Albanian, so hopefully I will know full phrases very soon.

At the moment the Peace Corps is using the camp for their Outdoor Ambassadors program which serves teens all over Albania. Since the campers are in their teens and have Peace Corps volunteers as their counselors, us Crossroads counselors don't have much to do. We have been helping with the ropes course and washing dishes after meals. The Christian summer camps begin on Sunday, June 26th and go through August. I hope to soon find out what activities I will be doing with the kids, whether it be archery or crafts or the ropes course. I am excited to be working with the kids, and have been working hard to adjust to my new surroundings. There is so much poverty in the Albanian towns, yet the people who live here are so friendly and welcoming. They truly put everything they have into God and know he will provide for them. I greatly admire the faith these Albanian Christians have in God and hope to learn from it.

The country of Albania itself is beautiful, covered with mountains and valleys coming in all shades of green. There are so many cows, horses and sheep, since most Albanians live agricultural lives and depend on animals for resources like food and transportation. I have wanted to come to Albania ever since I found out my grandmother's family is from here. This summer I finally had the time to go and sent an application to the mission committee requesting funds from the Conney Willis Memorial Scholarship to pay for my airfare and expenses. I had it approved and got the word out about my trip to the congregation through my Albania Craft Supplies project during Compassion Weekend. I will be here in Albania for a month, with my mom and aunt coming for my last week to visit the villages where our family is from. There is so much I hope to experience and learn on this trip, yet I know it will be over in a blink of an eye. Thank you so much for your support; the faith community is always in my thoughts and prayers. I can't wait to come back and share my experience with you all! If you would like a daily update about my trip, visit my blog at nmrey.Tumblr.com.

Peace and Love, Natalie Reyes

2011 Summer Mission Trip By Rudy Buehler

Recently, I drove by a neighborhood where just two years ago, 25 members of Faith and I spent a week helping families who had never owned a home before build their first homes in the Central Valley. When we arrived, the lots had nothing more than wooden frames and concrete. Today, that neighborhood in Reedley, California is full of life, with kids’ bicycles on driveways, flowers and lawns grown in, and people sitting on front porches.

This summer, Faith church has an opportunity to once again help families in the Central Valley. Starting on July 31st and ending on August 6th, our 2011 Summer Mission Trip team will head to Goshen, California (near Visalia) to again work with Self-Help Enterprises. We will have the opportunity to work directly with the families who will eventually move into the homes. There will be plenty of work for people of all ages; the minimum age is 14 but there is no maximum age. Each morning, we will work at the construction site and in the evening we will have different activities and speakers to help us learn more about the effects of poverty in our state and what we can do to help. Along with the construction work, we also are looking for a few volunteers who would like to be our “kitchen crew” for the week.

Faith’s congregation has always had an amazing heart for service ad mission. Our mission trips have been a part of that for more than 15 years now. It is my hope that you will seriously consider joining us on this trip. So mark your calendar now for July 31st through August 6th, and join us for this amazing experience!!

For more information, please contact Mission Elder Rudy Buehler.

Get Your Fireworks & Help the Faith Mission Team!

Save the dates! The Faith fireworks booth opens its doors again Tuesday, June 28 – Monday, July 4, at the corner of Florin Road and South Land Park Drive, in the California Bank of Trust parking lot. The booth will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Firework sales have helped support the Faith Summer Mission Trip team for more than 10 years, and proceeds this year will help the team of 25-30 people travel to Goshen, California (near Visalia) to help families build their first homes. Team members are proud to sell Phantom Fireworks and hope you will come by the booth for all your Fourth of July fun.

The team is also looking for volunteers to work at the booth. Please consider signing up for a 2- hour shift. The booth is especially busy in the final days before the 4th of July. Contact Mission Elder Rudy Buehler at [email protected] or (916) 376-7079 to sign up for a shift – or two – or for any questions about the booth.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to helping make your 4th of July spectacular!

Plan on Pathways this Fall! This fall we will again be holding a series of classes we call “Pathways to Discipleship.” These classes, which will be held on Sunday Mornings, Wednesday evenings or both and will cover the spectrum of the Christian life, will include: • Beginning With The Bible (An Introduction to Scripture) • Simply Christian (Core Christian Beliefs) • Making Space for God (Spiritual Practices) • Becoming a Contagious Christian (Sharing Your Faith) • Following God to Financial Freedom This class may be held in a weekend setting

These classes are specifically designed for those who want to grow in the fundamentals of his or her faith. They are great for a person new to the Christian faith or for someone who feels like they need to refresh some of the basics. You may choose to do one or all of the classes – you may even choose to take some classes more than once. Most of these classes have been revised or refreshed based on our two years of experience with them.

If this opportunity has any interest for you and you would like to know more, please talk to Pastor Jim by phone: 428- 3439 or email: [email protected]. Class session will begin in mid-September, but plan now to make this part of your life of faith this year.

Faith At the Movies Mark your calendar for our summer tradition of movies at Faith. Beginning Wednesday July 6th at 7pm and continuing for four weeks we will have to opportunity to see these four films about redemption, hope, and meaning in life.

Get Low: A movie spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable and real-life legend about the mysterious, 1930s Tennessee hermit who famously threw his own rollicking funeral party... while he was still alive.

Like Dandelion Dust: A compelling drama that explores the different meanings of being a parent through the gritty, realistic lives of the struggling, blue-collar Porters, and the privileged Campbell family.

Toy Story 3: A modern classic in animation! The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.

Of Gods & Men: Under threat by fundamentalist terrorists, a group of Trappist monks stationed with an impoverished Algerian community must decide whether to leave or stay.

We look forward to seeing you in July!!!

Men & Boys’ Retreat: June 10-12, 2011 at Westminster Woods Fifty-two men and boys signed up for a fun-filled, eventful time at Westminster Woods in Occidental during the second weekend in June. The special speaker was Del Burnett, whose topic, “So What’s Your Story?” was found to be inspirational, thought-provoking, and universally appealing. Men and boys from eight to eighty were encouraged and challenged to examine how we are living out our own stories in our lives, and to make them ever more in line with His- story, and to be the blessings that God wants us to be.

Friday night began with an outdoor Bar-B-Que prepared by Mike Hankey and Lee Bush in the Meadow, followed by a session calling our attention to how much we are bombarded by societal messages telling us that, in order to be happy, we need to buy and have stuff and more stuff. That was followed by free time in God’s own woods where we could take a night swim, play games, sing, or talk together – a practical demonstration that we have, in community, a better way to happiness.

Jeff Fisher headed up a team that led us in music the whole weekend. Rudy Bueler and Pat Tatro provided us a chance to play softball, volleyball, participate in a “Man Olympics” football extravaganza, sing songs and eat s’mores around a campfire. Pastor Jim Zazzera led us on a climb up to a hilltop cross on Saturday morning before our morning session with Del, and on Saturday afternoon, several went for a hike on coastal Blind Beach, or swam in or read by the pool, or had a chance to chat with our speaker informally in Hilltop House.

Sunday morning saw us gather on benches in a forest cathedral, singing amidst the morning rays of sun that were graciously sprinkled amongst the trees, and listening to Del’s leading in God’s message for us to become more a part of His-story. The Westminster Woods staff made sure we got a steady diet of good food, and Jim Tracy got it all on camera. Friendships were deepened, broadened, and begun – a perfect preface to next year’s retreat.

Care * Pray * Love Adopt a Faith College Student

As our youth transition into adulthood they need to be: reminded that they belong, held before their Savior, and known.

How do we do this and how could you play a part? Be a College Care Giver!

These students are our youth. They grew up under the wing of Faith Church and now are spreading their wings to fly. In the midst of such a time filled with learning, falling, discovering and searching they need to be reminded that they are dearly loved, remembered and always a part of God’s family! You get to be that small (but potentially very significant) reminder!

We have male and female students that are either away from home living on or near campus or living at home going to a local community or State college. What does this mean?

For at least two years... • Care by quarterly sending letters and/or care packages • Pray by regularly holding them in prayer before Jesus • Love by knowing them (this can be as simple as sending them letters or as much as taking them out to coffee when they are in town.

If you feel led to say yes, please let Pastor Quinn know by emailing or calling. I will send you a College Care Giver Interest Sheet and a more detailed explanation & instructions sheet. Contact me at [email protected] 916-428-3439

Sign Up Now – September 9th – 11th: Faith Fall Retreat – Zephyr Point, Lake Tahoe “In Feast or Fallow: Experiencing Jesus in Story and Song” with Sandra McCracken Come and spend the weekend with us as we consider how Jesus breaks through our music and Scripture and into our lives—offering us grace, listening to our stories, calling us to justice, and empowering all our actions. Sandra will lead us with hymns and songs new and old, thoughts about God’s call and presence, and stories from her own life of faith.

Sandra McCracken is an independent singer- songwriter whose smart, soulful blend of folk, pop, and gospel is as progressive as it is timeless. A founding contributor of the Indelible Grace projects, McCracken's contemporary settings of classic hymns are sung in congregations across the country. Drawing inspiration from , , , and U2, McCracken crafts songs wedding razor-sharp hooks to incisive, confessional lyrics to create a transcendent portrait of the human spirit. McCracken currently lives, writes, and records at her home in East Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, , and their two children.

Come and see all that God has planned for you and family and friends this fall!

The Fall Retreat: Is it Only About Music? Some of you have asked about whether our fall retreat with Sandra McCracken is “just music” and whether someone for whom music isn’t primary in his or her faith would find encouragement and growth at the retreat. The answer is: “There will absolutely be music, but there will be a lot more!”

There will be times for: • telling our own faith stories to each other • listening to Sandra’s story • exploring the role of creativity (of all kinds) in our faith • wondering about things that “bring us together” as God’s people • considering Jesus’ call to justice and his life of compassion • playing and rejoicing together as a family of Faith

There will also be musical times when: • we will hear reflections on faith and life through Sandra’s music • we will consider old hymns (many which you may not know) sung in new forms • we will have a panel discussion about the role of music in the church • we will celebrate with a concert

We encourage you to come with an open heart. When the people of God gather and seek God’s presence – “new wonders” are always revealed!

Update from the Stewardship Team Faith's Stewardship Team is so grateful for the congregation's generous support of all the efforts of our church. While many other churches are struggling financially, Faith continues to grow (in membership, financial resources and, of course, spiritually). While members may think of the Stewardship Ministry as being responsible for our annual pledge program (and that is indeed a big part of what we do) we also want to remind everyone that Stewardship is a year round effort. Beginning on March 20, 2011 and continuing on the third Sunday of every month, your Stewardship Ministry will have a table in the Narthex after each service to answer your questions about additional avenues for charitable giving to Faith. Issue of Wills & Trusts can be confusing, but we can help. We will have many printed resources that will help you not only with planned giving, but also how to simply organize your day-to-day finances. We look forward to serving you.

Peace, Jon Coupal (Stewardship Elder)

Protecting our Seniors from Scams Lately the news reports have been focusing on scams targeting older people — who are distracted by ‘would be repair people or handymen’. In this scam, folks are lured out of their homes into their yards or other areas while another person sneaks into the home and steals property.

In another tactic sometimes used in neighborhoods where there are homes up for sale — a person will approach a homeowner, introduce himself as a new neighbor and distract the owner by asking about a lot line while another person enters the home and steals property. “If anyone you don’t know comes to your door or approaches you in your yard or garage asking to go somewhere else around your house, do not go with them. If you can, get a description of person, the vehicle and/or license plate, but never put yourself in danger by opening the door!

Emergency Phone Call Scam Another very popular scam "the emergency phone call" is when a suspect phones pretending to be a grandchild, friend or third party such as police officer, attorney or border agent, with an urgent need for money possibly due to a situation occurring in another country. Typically in the scam, the caller claims they need funds wired immediately to cover a vehicle crash, an arrest, border taxes or medical needs. Stressing embarrassment, the caller urges the grandparent not to inform their parents or friends.

In today’s technological world, information is readily available on Facebook and other social networking sites enabling a criminal to obtain enough personal information about the victim to make the story sound plausible. Criminals have made millions of dollars from this type of scam.

Here are some tips to avoid getting ripped off: • Make sure of the caller’s identity. Don’t provide names or other information. Ask something that only the grandchild would know. •Verify the location of the family member by calling another family member or friend. • Resist the pressure to act quickly. Scammers depend on immediacy and will emotionally leverage love and embarrassment to induce their targets to wire funds quickly.

Disaster Relief Scams The recent tornados and flooding here in the states, as well as the earthquake/tsunami in Japan, have brought forth emails and calls from individuals claiming to be from reputable relief organizations. These scams follow disasters as relief groups ramp up their response efforts. Many well-known responders, including the Red Cross, do not proactively solicit funds.

If you wish to donate to disaster relief, call the organization’s phone number or visit their website. If you are solicited by phone or on the Web, you should be wary — do not give out your Social Security number, credit card or bank account information.

The best way to keep safe is communicate! Take some time to discuss these (and other) situations and talk to your relatives. Be skeptical! Do not allow access to your home and money! For those who are blessed to have seniors in your lives, be sure to make them aware. This is a good way to honor some very precious folks!

With love to all the seniors out there,
