    FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2020 TALKING 2-YEAR-OLD FATALITY RATE DROPS FOR 2019 IN JOCKEY CLUB EQUINE INJURY DATABASE SALES WITH MIKE RYAN In data released by The Jockey Club=s Equine Injury Database for 2019, the rate of fatal injury for Thoroughbreds last year dropped to 1.53 per 1,000 starts from a rate of 1.68 in 2018. It was the first time the rate has decreased since 2016, and overall the fatality rate is down 23.5% from the 10-year high of 2.0 per 1,000 starts in 2009. Based on the data, 99.84% of flat racing starts at racetracks that participated in the EID occurred without a fatality. A graph depicting all updated statistical data pertaining to surface, distance and age is available here. Per surface, the fatality rates in 2019 were 1.60 per 1,000 starts for dirt races, 1.53 for turf races and 0.93 for synthetic races. On dirt, there was a 14.2% drop in the rate from 2018 and overall there has been a 24.1% drop in dirt racing since 2009. Fatalities in turf races increased by 30%, while overall there has been a 19.6% drop in the fatality rate for turf races since 2009.     Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Daniel Watkins www.lapoftheodds.com Cheltenham Festival Guide 2021 Introduction The annual quest for winners sees me routinely holed up in a back bedroom, hunched over a keyboard and monitor for interminable weeks on end, hardly seeing a soul and rarely out of my pyjamas. What was a nerdy niche is now pretty much the working mainstream. Welcome to my world, one and all… With such trying external circumstances, and so little to look forward to in the short term, it seems that the pull of the Cheltenham Festival has grown exponentially greater again this year. This humble guide started for a few friends in 2004 and is now in edition number 18. If you are looking for views and predictions, they are now myriad over social media. There are some very insightful nuggets amongst the deafening cacophony of “this can’t be beaten” over-confidence. It is great to see such interest stimulated, and whilst hearing many views has the dangers of being dragged towards consensus (and there’s rarely profit there), it also helps temper the unfounded runaway confidence that can come from being in too much of a bubble. Thanks as always to the long-suffering Tanya, whose annual support for my selfish Springtime obsession is only partly offset by the knowledge that she is my obsession throughout the year. No-one should have had to witness the petulant tantrums when the Novice handicap chase was dropped for the mares chase, and I can only plead forgiveness!!     SUPPLEMENT TO THE RACING CALENDAR MAY23rd 2019 1 ANGLO-IRISH JUMP CLASSIFICATIONS 2018-2019 This is the twentieth full Anglo-Irish Jump Classification. It classifiesthe beststeeplechasers and hurdlers that were trained in either Britain or Ireland during the 2018-2019 season, or in France if that performance was achieved in Britain or Ireland. It is not ahandicap but aretrospective measurement of best sustainable performances during the recent season so there may be differences from current handicap marks. The classifications are for all chasers and hurdlers down to aratingof140. Both the steeplechasers and hurdlers are divided into distance categories of 2miles to 2miles 2.5 furlongs, 2miles 3furlongs to 2miles 6.5 furlongs and 2miles 7furlongs plus. They areincluded in the list in which the handicappers believe they have put up their best performance. This is the first season that the hurdlers has been divided into three categories to match the steeplechasing division. There is aseparateclassification identifying Novices rated 140 and above. Juvenile Hurdlers are included in the Novice Hurdle section. Horses trained in Ireland have *appended after their name. Horses trained in France but have aperformance at 140+ in Great Britain or Ireland have ** appended after their name. Mares are in italics, Hunter Chasers underscored.
