Anglo Irish Jump Classification.Indd 1 SUPPLEMENT TO THE RACING CALENDAR ANGLO-IRISH JUMP CLASSIFICATIONS 2019-2020 This is the twenty first full Anglo-Irish Jump Classification. It classifies the best steeplechasers and hurdlers that were trained in either Britain or Ireland during the 2019-2020 season, or in France if that performance was achieved in Britain or Ireland. It is not a handicap but a retrospective measurement of best sustainable performances during the recent season so there may be differences from current handicap marks. The classifications are for all chasers and hurdlers down to a rating of 140. Both the steeplechasers and hurdlers are divided into distance categories of 2 miles to 2 miles 2.5 furlongs, 2 miles 3 furlongs to 2 miles 6.5 furlongs and 2 miles 7 furlongs plus. They are included in the list in which the handicappers believe they have put up their best performance. This is the second season that the hurdlers has been divided into three categories to match the steeplechasing division. There is a separate classification identifying Novices rated 140 and above. Juvenile Hurdlers are included in the Novice Hurdle section. Horses trained in Ireland have * appended after their name. Horses trained in France but have a performance at 140+ in Great Britain or Ireland have ** appended after their name. Mares are in italics, Hunter Chasers underscored. The ratings were agreed and compiled by; Andrew Shaw Ireland Martin Greenwood Great Britain Andrew Mealor Great Britain David Dickinson Great Britain Chris Nash Great Britain Michael Harris Great Britain Shay Quinn Ireland Gordan Markham Great Britain The Handicappers are grateful for the assistance provided by Dominic Gardiner-Hill Great Britain Eric Castela France-Galop Andrew Dutton Weatherbys 2 SUPPLEMENT TO THE RACING CALENDAR ANGLO-IRISH STEEPLECHASE CLASSIFICATION 2019-2020 RATING 2 MILES 7F+ 2 MILES 3F - • Bulletin Book Extracts
Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.
