Dedication

We at Colby High School have been provided with a magnificent educational system. We have been endowed with a complex of buildings and a faculty that rival those of much larger cities. But just as a nation cal'! be no greater than its people, Colby High School would be an empty, meaningless thing if it were not for its students. The students of a school lend life, meaning, and an identity to what otherwise would be a dark, empty shell with no purpose for existence. There fore, the annual staff of Colby High School dedicates this 1968 edition of Hillcrest to you, the student body. One that has, through its participation in all phases of chool activities and its demonstration of school spirit, helped make Colby High School the great institution of learning that it is.

A Year Is a Long Time - Too Long to Forget. ..

MRS. WILDE

Mrs. Wilde is the voice you most often hear coming over the P.A. system with the announcements. She has worked here at CHS for two years and she handles many jobs such as taking care of locker keys, schedules, and lunch tickets. When asked if there was any comment she had about her work, she quickly replied, "There's never a dull moment."

MISS MILLER

Following her graduation from Colby High School, Chris became a secretary in the Colby School District. Among her varied duties as district secretary to Mr. Boettcher are: paying bills, taking care of the payroll, filling out state reports, sending district letters, and preparing a report for the school board each month. Chris has a beautiful new office this year and says she likes it very much.

MISS CLINE

Starting her first full year as secretary at Colby High School, Miss Cline's duties include checking attendance records, selling lunch tickets, taking care of insurance, and making announcements. Miss Cline has previously worked at the Elementary School, the Marshfield Clinic, and the Radke Insurance Agency. Maintenance Engineers

Alex Hilber, Gramps Schultz, and Royal Awe are the men that keep our school building in smooth running order. Always ready with a quick smile or a good word, they are among the most liked people on the Colby High School staff.

Culinary Wizards

With this year's new kitchen facilities, cooking should be simplified; but then feeding 700 hungry students is never easy. The cooks that serve us so faith fully are Mrs. Ida Faming, Mrs. Helen Brehm, Mrs. Laura Lenhard, Mrs. Evelyn Herman, and Mrs. Marjorie Brehm.

CLASS OF '68 Mr. Noma(ly, Mrs. Caskey, Mr. Haavisto, and Mr. Webb are the senior class advisors. The officers are Mary Lamont, secretary; Gerald Brecke, president; Helen Denzin, vice-president; and Ann Umhoefer, treasurer.

Sitting: Mary Ellen Schwartz, Peggy Lamont, Nancy Brunker, Kathy Schraufnagel. Hillcrest Production - Organized Bedlam

The Annual Staff consists of typists, solicitors, copy writers, and photographers who work throughout the entire year to put out the HILLCREST. In addition, the staff has an invaluable advisor. Without the dedicated help of Mr. Jarzin, it would have been impossible to produce this year book. Work for the new annual first gets into f~ll swing when representatives of the staff attend a yearbook workshop. As the pictures are taken , layouts are planned, and copy is written throughout the school year, the annual gradually be gins to take shape. Finally , with the completion of the last page, the staff is able to breathe a sigh of relief. By sponsoring a magazine drive and a coat check for school activities, the Annual Staff has been able to raise money for this organization.

If she works as hard next week, we might even let her use a desk. Our fearless leader hard at work.

lley girls, th.is isn't the way to make a deadline. The heights some people will go to get a good picture.

Well, look who's got the dummy book! You mean we really get OUR pictures taken? "Hornet's Buzz"

The purpose of the staff is to keep the students informed of school activities. The club , advised by Mr. Nelson work hard to put out a newspaper several times a year. Chiefs of staff are Susie Mueller, Editor; Sue Leichtnam, Assistant Editor; Don Gipp, Sports Editor; Betty Dearth, Exchange Editor ; Carol Gottschalk, Typ ist ; Dave Grewe and Jerry Flink, Publishers.

Not another mistake.

Why did I forget to put the paper in? I just can't stand people looking over my shoulder. Library Club "Fresh from the Shelves"

Students check card catalogue in the new library for necessary information.

Student librarians worked harder than ever this year keeping books and maga zines in their proper places in the new library. The librarians' duties also include checking out books, magazines, and newspapers. Each year the girls sponsor a Christ mas party and a Mother-Daughter Ban quet. New officers are installed during the Mother-Daughter Banquet. The officers instaJled this year were: Joceil Weix, President; Pam Firnstahl, Vice-president; Ann Jmhoefer, ecretary treasurer; and Linda I laas, Reporter. Mrs. Tennis and Mrs. Umhoefer are the club's advisors.

Busy librarians chew their fingernails while trying to decide on a change in policy. Masquers Curtain Call

This year the Masquer's Club pre sented three plays. Cries of laughter for THE UGLY DUCKLING, directed by Fran Waldhart, followed the cries ofter ror heard during THE LOTTERY, a dramatic satire directed by Masquer's advisor, Mrs. Schwartz. PILLOW TALK was also presented for the delight and amusement of a packed house. The officers of Masquer's are: Fran Waldhart, President; Linda Weirsig, Vice president; Donna Frome, Secretary; and Chuck Krueger, Treasurer.

Suspense builds ...... "It's not the way it used to be. People ain't the same way they used to be."

"What is it which has four legs and mews like a cat?" ... "A dog."

Up, up, and away ...

Tryouts for PILLOW TALK, a sophisticated comedy. "Well, your Majesty, her beauty certainly is elusive." DAR

This year's Daughter of the American Revolution Award went to Mary Lamont. Of three candidates selected by the senior class , the faculty chose one girl for the award. Lead ership, dependability, and patriotism were the basis for the choice.

Jim Staffeil is the recipient of the Voice of Democracy Award from CHS for the second consecutive year. His speech, entitled "Freedom's Challenge," was taped and entered in the district contest. The annual Voice of Democracy contest is sponsored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and is open to juniors and seniors. Jim received a twenty-five dollar savings bond for his efforts.

By receiving the highest score on the test, Mary was chosen to be presented with the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award, and is now eligible to compete in the district contest. National Honor Society

To qualify as a member of the National Honor Society, a student must show the qualities of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. It should be the goal of every CllS student to achieve the honor of becoming a member of the National Honor Society.

Badger State

Badger tate is an annual event sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. Its delegates learn the fundamentals of their city, county, and state governments through participation in meetings and mock elections. They also have the opportunity to listen to excellent speakers and to learn to solve the complex problems of today. Delegates are chosen according to their scholastic ability, lead ership, integrity, and loyalty. The 1967 Badger Boy's State was held in Ripon during the week of June 10-17. Badger Girl's State was held in Madison on the same days. This year's delegates from Colby were Mary Lee Brunker, Jim Staffeil, and Gene Reineking. Twice a year the band practices to suc cessfully put on two concerts, a Christmas concert and a spring concert. Toward spring, individual instrumentalists participate in a solo and ensemble contest, each working for the ultimate goal of state competition. This season was a rather unsuccessful one for the Colby Hornets. Due to relative inexperience, the team could not put together consistent performances, and as a consequence, they won only one game . As always after an unsuccessful season, one can only look forward to the next year. Here at Colby High , the future is indeed bright. The starting five will lose only one player, and the three juniors on this years team should have the experience and the skills to come through with a fine season . There are also quite a few promising young players coming up from the "B" team. "The Big Shots"

This year's wrestling team had a slow start, but finished the season by sending three boys to the sectional tourna ments. The Hillcrest staff of '68 hope the students of CHS will recall fond memories as they look back through this annual. We have endeavored to capture in these pages all of the wonders and blunders of the past school year. One year truly is too long to forget. Each new friendship or experience contributes to our treasury of past moments. We hope , then, that this an nual will preserve the past for the future.
