Hillcrest 1968 Hillcrest Colby High School Colby, Wisconsin 1968 Table of Contents Dedication Administration Class of '68 Class of '69 Class of '70 Junior High Activities Athletics Ads Dedication We at Colby High School have been provided with a magnificent educational system. We have been endowed with a complex of buildings and a faculty that rival those of much larger cities. But just as a nation cal'! be no greater than its people, Colby High School would be an empty, meaningless thing if it were not for its students. The students of a school lend life, meaning, and an identity to what otherwise would be a dark, empty shell with no purpose for existence. There fore, the annual staff of Colby High School dedicates this 1968 edition of Hillcrest to you, the student body. One that has, through its participation in all phases of chool activities and its demonstration of school spirit, helped make Colby High School the great institution of learning that it is. Unambiguous Black Hole Mass from Polarimetry and Application to Hot Jupiters Dissertation by Sloane J. Wiktorowicz In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 2009 (Defended July 28, 2008) ii c 2009 Sloane J. Wiktorowicz All Rights Reserved iii This dissertation is dedicated to my wife Sharon, who has stood by my side and supported me while writing. I also dedicate this work to my family, who have encouraged me to pursue my love of the stars and whose advice and support through the years have been essential. iv v Acknowledgements Many thanks go to Keith Matthews, whose help and advice have been essential in construction of my instrument. I would like to thank Michael Ireland and Ian McEwan for valuable discussions on instrumentation, polarimetry, and signal processing. I appreciate the help of the Palomar Obser- vatory staff, especially Bruce Baker, Karl Dunscombe, John Henning, Greg van Idsinga, and Steve Kunsman. Without their help, this instrument would literally not have gotten off the ground. I thank Shri Kulkarni, who inspired me to pursue instrumentation. I acknowledge David Stevenson for a valuable debate regarding condensation in a water-hydrogen mixture and Conner Wiktorowicz for his help in determining uncertainty along the photospheric adiabat. I would like to acknowledge funding from the Moore Foundation. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS, Strasbourg, France. vi vii Abstract A novel technique for detecting light scattered by extrasolar planets is presented that has the poten- tial to constrain orbital inclination and planet mass.

March 9, 2021 Brenda Mallory Chair White House Council on Environmental Quality 730 Jackson Pl NW Washington, DC 20506 Via email Re: Utility disconnection moratorium for Tennessee Valley Authority Dear Ms. Mallory, Please find attached petitions signed by over 21,500 people from Tennessee and beyond urging the Tennessee Valley Authority to institute a utility shutoff moratorium throughout its service area. As the letters attached state, “Without electricity, people won’t be able to shelter in homes that are a safe temperature, support remote schooling for their kids, or refrigerate their medicines. It is a decision that literally has life-or-death consequences.” For several months throughout the pandemic, advocates have urged TVA to institute such a moratorium, but to no avail. We now call upon President Biden to act, by issuing an Executive Order directing TVA to keep people’s power on-- the only responsible option during a pandemic. Please also find attached a memo outlining the President’s authority to issue an Executive Order to this effect. It presents their origins (including foreign influences), types and word formation. We can see, among other things, that the French surnames are shorter, but have many dialectal variants, while the Polish surnames are longer and have a richer derivation. The article also focuses on demographic statis- tics of such surnames in both countries: the blacksmith as an etymon is the most popular. In the top 50, there are also in France: baker, miller and mason; while in Poland: tailor and shoemaker. Key words: family names; surnames; patronyms; handicraft; artisan.
