We have been endowed with a complex of buildings and a faculty that rival those of much larger cities. But just as a nation cal'! be no greater than its people, Colby High School would be an empty, meaningless thing if it were not for its students. The students of a school lend life, meaning, and an identity to what otherwise would be a dark, empty shell with no purpose for existence. There­ fore, the annual staff of Colby High School dedicates this 1968 edition of Hillcrest to you, the student body. One that has, through its participation in all phases of chool activities and its demonstration of school spirit, helped make Colby High School the great institution of learning that it is. Boss Clerk President Treasurer The Board of Education of Colby Public Schools has the responsibility of overseeing the complete education­ al program of the school. They serve as a policy making body, determining the best policies to facilitate the opera­ tion of the school system. Among their many duties are ap­ proving a budget for each school year, providing transportation for students, providing a hot lunch program, em­ ploying sufficient educational staff to accommodate the pupil population, making certain all buildings are prop­ Dr. J. Grammer Director erly equipped and maintained, as well as keeping abreast of educational Director happenings and trends in order to keep pace with the demands of today's ed­ ucation. The Board of Education meets reg­ ularly every month and in addition has many special meetings during the year as needed. While their duties are many and their hours long, the Colby Board of Education is pledged to providing the finest educational opportunities and advantages for the youth of the school district. Mr. W. C. Pinter Mr. Calvin Schultz Director Director Administration Mr. Boe ttcher Mr. Boettcher received his Bachelor's Degree at W.S. U. Stevens Point and his Master's Degree at the University of Wyoming. As the executive officer of the School Board, he submits budgets and plans the spending of money in our district. Mr. Boettcher also carries out the policies dictated by the School Board. Mr. Schwartz Mr. Schwartz accepted his dutie as principal at Colby High School early last summer. lie received his Bachelor's Degree at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and his Master's Degree at the University of Minnesota. As principal, his major duties are the following: su­ pervision of the Junior and Senior High School; development of the curriculum; bus transportation; and the unpleasant, but necessary, task of discipline. Mr. Schwartz comments that he enjoys working with the students and faculty of Colby High School. Mrs. Hibbard As supervisor of the elementary grades, Mrs. Hibbard's duties vary. She sets up parent-teacher conferences, co­ ordinates curricula, and, in general, keeps classes from kindergarten to ninth grade running smoothly. Mrs. Hibbard received her Bachelor's Degree at W.S. U. Stevens Point and her Master's degree at W.S. U. Superior. Guidance Mr. Haavi sto As guidance counselor for the Senior High, Mr. Haavisto's services are invaluable to the students of C.H.S. His duties consist of arranging individual class schedules, testing, and of course, offering advice about college and careers to unde­ cided seniors. Students waiting to see Mr. Haas or Mr. Haavisto can browse and enjoy the comforts of their new waiting room. Mr. Haas Junior High School students with questions and prob­ lems can come to Mr. Haas for answers. In addition to his duties as Junior High Guidance Counselor, Mr. Haas is also assistant principal. She has worked here at CHS for two years and she handles many jobs such as taking care of locker keys, schedules, and lunch tickets. When asked if there was any comment she had about her work, she quickly replied, "There's never a dull moment." MISS MILLER Following her graduation from Colby High School, Chris became a secretary in the Colby School District. Among her varied duties as district secretary to Mr. Boettcher are: paying bills, taking care of the payroll, filling out state reports, sending district letters, and preparing a report for the school board each month. Chris has a beautiful new office this year and says she likes it very much. MISS CLINE Starting her first full year as secretary at Colby High School, Miss Cline's duties include checking attendance records, selling lunch tickets, taking care of insurance, and making announcements. Miss Cline has previously worked at the Elementary School, the Marshfield Clinic, and the Radke Insurance Agency. Maintenance Engineers Alex Hilber, Gramps Schultz, and Royal Awe are the men that keep our school building in smooth running order. Always ready with a quick smile or a good word, they are among the most liked people on the Colby High School staff. Culinary Wizards With this year's new kitchen facilities, cooking should be simplified; but then feeding 700 hungry students is never easy. The cooks that serve us so faith­ fully are Mrs. Ida Faming, Mrs. Helen Brehm, Mrs. Laura Lenhard, Mrs. Evelyn Herman, and Mrs. Marjorie Brehm.
