Klíčová slova Herní studia, herně-narativní disonance, ideologie ve videohrách, kritická kulturní analýza Abstract The thesis focuses on ludo-narrative dissonance in videogames‘ ideological discourse. Ludo-narrative dissonance dissonance allows us to analyze videogames as ideologically complex and diverse socio-cultural phenomenon. In its theoretical framework, the thesis is building on critical cultural analysis presented by Douglas Kellner and related authors. The objective of the thesis is to perform a critical analysis of an action RPG videogame Dishonored, identify dissonance between ludic and narrative dimensions and analyze them in the context of progressive-conservative ideological clash. Maps are created based on offering equal chances of winning or losing for both teams. Also, a character adaptation system is developed which allows changing the attributes of players in real-time according to their behaviour, always maintaining the game balanced. Our tests show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms to establish the adequate values in a MOBA video game. Buonocor Abstract This study examines and compares the environmental footprint of video game distribution on last generation consoles, current generation consoles and personal computers (PC). Two different methods of delivery are compared on each platform: traditional retail on optical discs and digital downloads in the U.S. Downloading content has been growing and is used to distribute movies, music, books and video games. This technology may change the environmental footprint of entertainment media. Previous studies on books, music, movies and television shows found that digital methods of distribution reduced emissions. However, prior research on video games, looking only at previous generation consoles, found the opposite conclusion. -

Although some tropes are present in the game and are necessary to stay tonally consistent to the genre, I argued that much of the focus of the game is shifted from the typical situational horror of the monsters and violence to the overall narrative, effective dialogue, strategic use of cinematic elements, and character development throughout the course of the game. -
The Decline of Mmos
The Decline of MMOs Prof. Richard A. Bartle University of Essex United Kingdom May 2013 Abstract Ten years ago, massively-multiplayer online role-playing games (MMOs) had a bright and exciting future. Today, their prospects do not look so glorious. In an effort to attract ever-more players, their gameplay has gradually been diluted and their core audience has deserted them. Now that even their sources of new casual players are drying up, MMOs face a slow and steady decline. Their problems are easy to enumerate: they cost too much to make; too many of them play the exact same way; new revenue models put off key groups of players; they lack immersion; they lack wit and personality; players have been trained to want experiences that they don’t actually want; designers are forbidden from experimenting. The solutions to these problems are less easy to state. Can anything be done to prevent MMOs from fading away? Well, yes it can. The question is, will the patient take the medicine? Introduction From their lofty position as representing the future of videogames, MMOs have fallen hard. Whereas once they were innovative and compelling, now they are repetitive and take-it-or-leave-it. Although they remain profitable at the moment, we know (from the way that the casual games market fragmented when it matured) that this is not sustainable in the long term: players will either leave for other types of game or focus on particular mechanics that have limited appeal or that can be abstracted out as stand-alone games (or even apps). -

Ubisoft® Celebrates 30 Years of Creating Games at E3 2016 PARIS, FRANCE — June 2, 2016 — Today, Ubisoft reveals its plans for E3 2016, where its creative teams will proudly present highly anticipated titles such as Watch Dogs® 2, For Honor™ or Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands. Lollipop Chainsaw Goichiego Sudy I Problem Autorstwa W Medium Gier Wideo
2015 / Homo Ludens 2(8) Lollipop Chainsaw Goichiego Sudy i problem autorstwa w medium gier wideo DOMINIKA STASZENKO Uniwersytet Łódzki Abstract Goichi Suda's Lollipop Chainsaw and the problem of authorship in video games This paper examines the phenomenon of the game designed by Goichi Suda, also known as Suda 51. It focuses on the analysis of Lollipop Chainsaw, detailing the characteristics of his work, such as a sense of humor, unique aesthetics and controversial solutions. This Japanese designer is sometimes considered as an artist who manifests his original ideas even in high-budget games. This paper also describes the problem of authorship in the video games medium using Suda’s creation as an example. KEYWORDS: Goichi Suda, aesthetics, remediation, authorship 1. -
Roots Report: an Interview with Weird Al
Roots Report: An Interview with Weird Al Okee dokee folks… Almost exactly one year ago I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Zeiterion in New Bedford. In all honesty it was one of the BEST shows I have EVER seen. It was fun, funny, energetic … basically AWESOME! I had a grin on my face the whole time. Weird Al is a comical/musical genius. I know a lot of you will scoff at this and probably think what he does is easy. It’s not, but he makes it seem that way as he effortlessly genre-shifts and works lyrical magic with the lampoons. Weird Al is bringing his Mandatory Fun Show to the Providence Performing Arts Center on September 14, and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his tour, music and upcoming show. Before I did the interview I asked folks on Facebook what they would like to know about Al, and I based my all of questions on those responses. John Fuzek: What was your favorite video to film? Weird Al: Probably “Tacky” (a parody of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams). It was also one of the easier videos to film because it was all done in one shot. Once we had the DP and the crew rehearsed, my celebrity friends came in. We told them where their marks were, everybody was professional and we knocked it out in a couple of hours. It was great. I got to work with some of the funniest people I know: Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho and Eric Stonestreet … you know, they’re in my address book.
