There's nothing funny about it. But survival, and what it takes to survive, there can be humor in that.” -Rob Reiner, Director “I am…privy to many of the films that are released on a yearly basis about the Holocaust. I cannot think of one project that has taken the approach of THE LAST LAUGH. THE LAST LAUGH dispels the notion that there is nothing new to say or to reveal on the subject because this aspect of survival is one that very few have explored in print and no one that I know of has examined in a feature documentary.” -Richard Tank, Executive Director at the Simon Wiesenthal Center SHORT SYNOPSIS THE LAST LAUGH is a feature documentary about what is taboo for humor, seen through the lens of the Holocaust and other seemingly off-limits topics, in a society that prizes free speech.

Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1988. Mulvey, L. “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema.” In Leo Braudy and Marshall Cohen (Ed.), Film Theory and Criticism (pp. 837-848). Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1975. VOL 4 | 36 WHAT’S SO FUNNY: COMEDY IN AMERICA EMILY MOUSSEAU-DOUGLAS ased on reviews and articles I had read about the new faux documentary Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, I Bexpected that when I actually saw it, I would be disgusted. I imagined sitting low in my theatre seat, covering my eyes, horrified by the displays on the screen. When I finally got to see the movie, I was disappointed at my lack of disgust and horror. It was not nearly as outrageous or offensive as I felt all those articles had promised it would be. My disappointment made me think about my extensive exposure to vulgar comedy and the nature of comedy in America. Perhaps I have been desensitized to bodily functions and nudity, especially when they are presented in the name of comedy. Perhaps years filled with American Pie’s and Scary Movie’s, capped by the summer of raunchy sex farces (like Wedding Crashers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin) have made it hard for me to be shocked and appalled by anything, even the scene of a hairy naked man wrestling a fat naked man, which constitutes the climax of the Borat movie.

  • 1 Introduction Beginning in the Early 1970S, a Shift Occurred in the World
1 Introduction Beginning in the early 1970s, a shift occurred in the world of television comedy. New network executives came in and decided to change the content that was being put on the air. The popular TV shows of the 1960s were based in fantasy and did not address any relevant issues. Programs like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Green Acres and Petticoat Junction were some of the highest rated shows of the decade. The reasons for these show’s success are many. One being they appealed to audiences young and old. Television had become cheap enough to be nearly ubiquitous in the U.S. and therefore a family activity. Also, commercial sponsors were and continue to be the loudest voice in determining a program’s content, and wanted to attract the largest audience possible. “And let’s face it, if you’re a salesman and your goal is to sell as many cans of dog food or tubes of toothpaste as you possibly can, the last thing you want to do is offend any potential customers.” 1 After the Communist threat or “red scare” became a lesser issue in the late 1960s, networks felt as though they could depart from traditional, antiquated values and address real societal issues. However, producers and network executives felt as though the best way to portray these issues was through the situation comedy genre. Early sitcoms like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, All in the Family, Maude and Soap all tackled issues that were extremely relevant in the lives of many Americans as well as in the greater American culture.
