Warehouse Cricketers with Brett lee and Adam zwar in ABC Bodyline Series Allan Border Oval August 2013

In 2013, Warehouse Cricketers in conjunction with Serendipity Films, participated in an ABC documentary at Allan Border Oval.

Comedian, writer & self-confessed cricket tragic, Adam Zwar presented and starred in a documentary, putting his body on the line to see if a “mere mortal” could have faced up to Bodyline in the modern era wearing that “equipment” used by players in one of cricket's most controversial cricket seasons. Brett Lee played a starring role along with Umpire Peter Mathieson looking every part, the 1930s Umpire. Warehouse Cricketers provided support roles. Warehouse Cricket wishes to thank Bruce Permezel and Lavinia Riachi as well as Adam and Brett for providing Warehouse Cricket with the opportunity to be a part of this excellent production. Special thanks go also to Lance Roudenko of the Roudenko Cricket Academy for his coordination with myself in making this event possible and to Gabba Sporting Products who outfitted the cast for playing uniforms on the day.

Laurence Christie (Development Officer)

“BodyLine” went to air on ABC on 17th November and 19th December 2013.

Plunkett Cup Success.

The highlight of the year was the success of the Plunkett Cup team, who defeated Sub-Districts in the final, on their home ground. The decision to appoint a coach was the key to unlocking the talent that is in our playing ranks. Lance Roudenko did a great job in bringing the side together as the coach and coupled with the captaincy of David Brain, the team defended a moderate total brilliantly to win the final. I have said this in the last few reports, but again Troy Burns cannot be commended highly enough for his work with our representative side. Without his drive and passion for this role, representative cricket would just be a memory for Warehouse Cricket.

Umpires : (Right: Neil Simpson – Secretary of Warehouse Cricket Umpires Association since 1987)

Once again, our umpires association, led by Neil Simpson and Peter Mathieson, have done a great job again with our umpiring fraternity. We all realise that a game of cricket can live or die by the quality of umpiring, and with the training program in place, we are seeing a source of quality umpires coming into the ranks. It is great to see former Laurence Christie Medal winner Peter Collins donning the black and white and giving back to our Association. My personal thanks go to Neil and Peter for their ongoing work in this unsung role for us.

Game Development

Laurence Christie has continued to do a great job as Development Officer. We secured additional funding from Queensland Cricket to allow this role to continue on. Increased playing numbers (particularly in the summer T20 competition), is a big plus, along with increased junior numbers for winter are the fruits of his work. He has done an excellent job in securing additional sponsorship for the Association, in an era where finding sponsors has become more difficult. Warehouse Cricket would struggle without his endless supply of energy he puts into the role.

(Left: Umpire Peter Mathieson “on duty” as Royal Tigers plays Macgregor in T20 finals at Kianawah Park in March.

Canteen The success of Warehouse Cricket is continually assisted by our canteen operators at Marchant and Kianawah Parks. The Webster and Finegan families make sure our players are fed and watered, fees are collected, balls are sold, stumps are supplied and problems solved. On behalf of the executive, I would like to again thank them for their work. PAGE 6 This Annual Report printed with the support of Konica Minolta Qld Social Media

After our initial foray into the world of Facebook and , we were lucky enough to have Angeline Lowther come and work with us via Queensland Cricket, to polish up our offerings in this area. We now have 800 Facebook supporters and well over 200 Twitter followers, which is allowing us to reach our playing group more quickly and also more cheaply. The Chairman’s report expands on how her expertise has enhanced Warehouse Cricket’s offerings and I can only echo the comments from Barry Peacock in this regard.

Ground Staff Our ground staff, led by Chris Doughty, yet again continues to do great work. Given some of the wet weather challenges they are faced with, the at Marchant and Seventh Brigade Park continually are of a high standard. The work done by Errol and Nyall with Chris, enable our cricketers to play on quality surfaces week in and week out. Sometimes, our clubs and players do not realise how hard these guys work to make sure games are played wherever possible. My thanks, and that of the Executive, go out to them these guys

Financial Report Once again Peter Pfeffer has done a fantastic job in looking after our financials. Once again we are in a sound financial position, and given our reduced general funding from Queensland Cricket, and the increased burden of paying the Player Insurance Costs, Peter is to be congratulated on his work in this area.

Executive Committee We have had a coherent and hard-working executive committee in place over the last 12 months, where all members have contributed to the workings of Warehouse Cricket. Whilst we were disappointed to lose Haroon Khan on a work transfer, he is to be commended for the job he has done in the Conduct Commissioner’s role. He will be sorely missed, but welcomed back should he return back to . His role as Conduct Commissioner has been taken by Prashant Vazirani, who has taken to the role with real enthusiasm. We were lucky to have Andrew Middleton on our committee, who provided his professional guidance when an opportunity arose to obtain grants to upgrade the drainage facilities. Without this, we would have missed an opportunity and he is to be thanked for his time in this regard, as well as stepping up into the Chairman’s role was required. Our other Executive members, Mick Osborne and Blair Steele have done a fantastic job as well and I look forward to working with them again over the next year. Having these executive members still in the playing ranks, has given the executive an input into what clubs and players want from our Association.

The Future As an Association, we need to look to embrace what our changing players group is looking for. Whilst there is always the preference for two day cricket and 50 over cricket, the growth in T20 gives an indication of where our game may be headed. Our Executive will continue to make sure that we offer competitions and facilities that allow our players and clubs the opportunity to play and enjoy the game, in whatever format they prefer to play.

Damian Sharry (President)

PAGE 7 This Annual Report printed with the support of Konica Minolta Qld Chairman’s Report

Thanks again cricketers for giving me the opportunity to be Chairman of the Warehouse Cricket Association of Qld (WCAQ) Executive Committee. Rather than naming and thanking all the people in the Warehouse Cricket family who have performed volunteer and paid functions of the Association over the past year, I wholeheartedly endorse the recognition and thanks mentioned by all other report writers in this Annual Report.

I am very proud as Chairman to offer my time and efforts to the Association and to support its goals wherever and whenever I can. I trust we can persuade more cricketers to also be involved at the highest levels of the Association. Last year, the Association did not attract the additional Executive Committee members it needed as endorsed by last year’s AGM. However, I trust that this situation changes this year.

WCAQ Development: As the 2004 Chairman reported, Association facilities at Kianawah Park are underused in summer. Ten years on, the situation remains essentially the same except that the Executive Committee notes the increasing unrecompensed use of its Kianawah Park facilities, particularly after weekend games cease or where games are not rostered to ovals on weekends. Warehouse Cricket cannot continue to bear the cost of wear and tear of synthetic wickets if users do not pay for that use. The Executive Committee is looking at ways to remedy this situation for the benefit of all Warehouse Cricket family members.

The Development Officer, Laurence Christie and I had Executive Committee support to visit schools with the help of Queensland Cricket to introduce more people to the winter cricket product which continues to be recognized as quality, some say, real cricket, particularly for juniors. We judge that the sooner junior cricketers (and their carers) become aware of our quality product, that is, quality junior cricket during winter seasons, the more likely it will be considered as a suitable winter sporting option in the future. For one reason or another we did not proceed with that plan. We need to revisit that proposal sooner rather than later. In addition, the Development Officer needs to be more free to pursue development as envisaged by past Executive Committees and past AGMs. Planning. Like most organizations, Warehouse Cricket needs formal plans. In earlier years, the Executive Committee committed to annual strategic and operational planning. I trust that the Executive Committee can return to formal planning processes outside the weekly and monthly operational ones seeking the input of those external to the Executive Committee.

Thank You. Contrary to the observations I made in my general vote of thanks at the top of my report I wish to specifically thank a couple of folk, one who has left the Executive Committee (Haroon Khan) and one who has just filled the casual vacancy (Angeline Lowther) created by Haroon’s departure. That said, I thank retired Executive Committee member, Haroon Khan for his commitment to the Executive Committee including efforts he made to develop a with the Qld Cricketers' Club. Haroon and I still believe the Qld Cricketers' Club is but one cricket oriented organization where collaboration might lead to mutual benefits. There are no doubt, other opportunities. The Executive Committee will welcome Haroon back with open arms if and when he is in a position to be involved with Warehouse Cricket in the future. PAGE 8 This Annual Report printed with the support of Konica Minolta Qld

The Development Officer, Laurence Christie and I worked closely with Angeline Lowther to, among other things, move Warehouse Cricket from its old website to the new one within MyCricket. Our focus was, in the transition, to maintain the integrity of the old website including its useful functionality. To that end, we are almost there, with the team working on improving the website even more. Angeline Lowther came to assist Warehouse Cricket as a University Intern through Queensland Cricket and impressed us enough to consider her to fill the casual vacancy caused by Haroon’s departure. Among other things, the new Warehouse Cricket website is a testament to Angeline’s commitment to this Association.

General Warehouse Cricket is a complex entity with many facets that require volunteers and paid staff to devote considerable time and effort to provide useful and suitable outcomes for cricketers. While the volunteer base can be expanded in a “casual” manner as needs direct, the volunteer base at the Executive Committee level still needs to be broadened. This will allow the workload to be more reasonably spread and should reduce the risk that things can be inadvertently overlooked and that interests will be or are conflicted. To this end, I continue to support the need for different volunteers to perform the Secretarial, fiduciary and statistics functions for obvious risk management purposes. Last year, the AGM endorsed the Annual Report which also meant it endorsed my calls for action to separate duties and responsibilities currently residing with one or two Executive Committee members.

Survey The Executive Committee trusts if your team or club decides to cease playing cricket with Warehouse Cricket, you share with us the reason why the team or club will not continue. From this constructive information, the Executive Committee can assess whether it has the option to reasonably make useful changes or solutions for the benefit of all. If you have ideas that can progress and develop Warehouse Cricket, the Executive Committee will gladly consider them. If any person has comments, concerns or suggestions for the betterment of the Association, I am more than willing to consider them. Please also support the Association in its fund raising endeavours.

Best wishes with your cricket.

During the past 12 months, the role of Commissioner was carried out by firstly, Haroon Khan and then by Prashant Vazirani when Haroon moved upstate for work commitments. The role of Commissioner provide players, umpires and the Executive Committee with a respected process for investigating incidents both on off the field where they occur. Over the past 12 months in all but two cases, the player deemed by the Commissioner to have a charge/s to answer, accepted an offered penalty without the need to convene a Code of Conduct hearing. Where a player did not accept an offered penalty, then the Code of Conduct provision of a penalty of double that originally offered would have been imposed if proven guilty of the charge.

When signing on for the season, all players are required to acknowledge that they are aware of the Code of Conduct and as such there should be no reason for breaches of the Code during any season. However, incidents do occur and the following is a précis of cases that have been reported and actioned by the Commissioner during the 2013 Winter season and 2013-2014 Summer season.

PAGE 16 This Annual Report printed with the support of Konica Minolta Qld Treasurer’s Report

The 2013/14 financial year was another fairly quiet year for the Warehouse Executive financially.

The number of government and community grant programs that used to prevail throughout the year seem to be reactivated following several financially quiet years following the Brisbane floods. Warehouse Cricket applied for and was successful for a $23,000 grant from the Brisbane City Council to assist in the improvement of the drainage of the grounds at Marchant Park and 7th Brigade Park. These funds will be used improve the drainage and flow of excess water away from the playing grounds. This should assist the grounds to dry faster and recover better from rainfall. Our major sponsor, Gabba Sporting Products continued their close relationship with Warehouse Cricket. The sponsorship with Gabba Sporting Products provides a significant financial benefit to the Association, which assists in keeping the costs of playing cricket to a minimum. Laurence Christie continued in his role as the part time Development Officer. Laurence continues his usual tireless hard working self and provides endless support and assistance on numerous projects and issues. On behalf of the Warehouse Executive, I would like to thank him for his continual efforts in this role. I would also like to thank Qld Cricket as well as the three levels of Government for their financial support for community projects, both big and small, which have greatly assisted Warehouse Cricket to provide excellent facilities to our cricketers. In addition I also want to thank Mark Gaskell and his Staff of Gabba Sporting Products for their ongoing sponsorship program as well as all other sponsors who regular provide both financial and equipment support to Warehouse Cricket. Without this assistance Warehouse Cricket would struggle to provide cricket competitions to all its members.
