    NOTES AND DOCUMENTS THE STUDY OF PIONEER LIFE: TWO REPLIES TO MR. DAVIS MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, January 24, 1930 DEAR EDITOR: Having in my boyhood days experienced the life and trials of a pioneer upon the prairies of western Minnesota, I was much interested in reading in your last quarterly the criticism by Le Roy G. Davis of certain incidents and statements contained in Rolvaag's Giants in the Earth.^ I read this rather remarkable book with a great deal of interest — an interest much enhanced because of my own personal con­ tact with frontier life and because I recognized in the story a substantially correct picture of conditions and the social life prevailing in those far-flung stretches lying out beyond " where the West begins." Mr. Davis selects a few statements from the book (I presume the most extreme he could find) and sets out to prove that a false picture is painted by the author. My own impression and feeHng is that Rolvaag's picture is true in substance and practically so in detail. I will briefly go over the several objections made by Mr. Davis: I. Mr. Rolvaag states that "original settlers are agreed that there was neither bird nor insect life on the prairie, with the exception of mosquitoes, the first year that they came." Mr. Davis challenges this statement. If I remember rightly, mention was made in the story of the passing of ducks and geese. With that qualification, I believe the statement to be substantially correct. Before the advent of the settler the open prairie, far removed from rivers, lakes, and trees, was practically devoid of bird life.

    Nebraska Winter Weather Awareness Day Winter Weather Awareness Day - November 4, 2010 With Fall upon the Great Plains, now is the time to focus attention to winter weather and the dangers it can pose to life and property. November 4th, 2010 has been declared as Winter Weather Awareness Day for the state of Nebraska. Each year, dozens of Americans die due to exposure to the cold. Winter weather accounts for vehicle accidents and fatalities, and results in fires due to dangerous use of heaters and other winter weather fatalities. Other hazards, such as hypothermia and frostbite, can lead to the loss of fingers and toes or cause permanent internal injuries and even death. The very young and the elderly are among those most vulnerable to the potentially harsh winter conditions. Recognizing the threats and knowing what to do when they occur could prevent the loss of extremities or save a life. A winter storm can last for several days and be accompanied by high winds, freezing rain or sleet, heavy snowfall and cold temperatures. People can be trapped at home or in a car with no utilities or assistance, and those who attempt to walk for help could find themselves in a deadly situation. The aftermath of a winter storm can have an impact on a community or region for days, weeks, or possibly months. Wind - Some winter storms have extremely strong winds which can create blizzard conditions with blinding, wind driven snow, drifting, and dangerous wind chills. These intense winds can bring down trees and poles, and can also cause damage to homes and other buildings.

NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory, Norman, Oklahoma 8 Abstract 9 Harsh winters and hazards such as blizzards are synonymous with the northern Great Plains 10 of the United States. Studying these events is difficult; the juxtaposition of cold temperatures and 11 high winds makes microphysical observations of both blowing and falling snow challenging. 12 Historically, these observations have been provided by costly hydrometeor imagers that have been 13 deployed for field campaigns or at select observation sites. This has slowed the development and 14 validation of microphysics parameterizations and remote-sensing retrievals of various properties. 15 If cheaper, more mobile instrumentation can be developed, this progress can be accelerated. 16 Further, lowering price barriers can make deployment of instrumentation feasible for education 17 and outreach purposes. 18 The Blowing Snow Observations at the University of North Dakota: Education through 19 Research (BLOWN-UNDER) Campaign took place during the winter of 2019-2020 to investigate 1 20 strategies for obtaining microphysical measurements in the harsh North Dakota winter.     JANE WEST CLAUSS I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1907, the eleventh child of Willis Mason West and the fourth of my Mother, Elizabeth Beach west. I remember little of the first five years prior to my father's resignation from the University to take up dairy farming in northern Minnesota. we all loved the out door life at the farm, learning to swim at an early age to be allowed to canoe by ourselves before we c::ould properly reach the end of a paddle. We had our chores: keeping the , fires stocked with wood, and the iceb¥ filled with cakes of ice from the root cellar where they were stored in sawdust following their winter cutting from the lake, weeding and harvesting our large vegetable garden as well as gathering huge crops of wild berries for desserts, drinks and jams. Mother soon found the easiest way to assign these chores was to put a chart on our wall with each name and duty for a week at a time. We didn't even seem to mind the extremely cold winters where one year it never got above forty below for an entire month! We built elaborate forts and snow igloos in our deep snow drifts onesover which we sometimes had to navigate on our skis used as snow shoes. We used them also to layout the paths for our favorite game of Run Sheep, Run. Our schooling took place year round, but largely consisted of our parents never failing to read the classics aloud to us before bedtime.

Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society Member, Patricia Leland Mereen, sent this article written by Joseph Bodwell as part of an autobiography written for his grandchildren. He is known as “Gramps” for this reason. Joseph Henry Bodwell was born in Hallowell, Maine on July 8, 1891, the fourth child of eight. His parents were Willard Arthur Bodwell (1859-1931) and Carrie Alice Gage (1863-1954). He attended the University of Maine, Orono from 1912, graduating in 1915. On June 24, 1916, he married Irene Pearl Emery in Salem, New Hampshire. They had two sons, Walter Arthur Bodwell (1918-1998) and Ralph Emery Bodwell (1921-2001) and last a daughter, Irene Pearl, born on November 26, 1928. Mother Irene passed away on November 26, 1928 giving birth to their daughter.
