A SSOCIATION A Project of the National Maritime Museum Association History of USS PAM PAN ITO USS PAMPANITO (SS-383) is a World War II fleet subma­ rine built in 1943 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, New Hamp­ shire. PAM PAN ITO is a Balao class submarine and made six patrols during World War II. She sank six Japanese ships and damaged four others, with a total of over 27,000 tons of enemy shipping sunk. During her first two patrols PAM PAN ITO narrowly escaped destruction. While attacking an enemy convoy on the first patrol, PAM PAN ITO was spotted, severely depth charged and damaged. On PAM PAN ITO's second patrol, while patrolling off the coast of Japan, alert lookouts spotted two torpedo wakes approaching allowing enough time to avoid them. Sev­ eral days later another approaching torpedo was sighted. Eva­ sive measures were taken and the torpedo crossed PAMPANITO's Commanding Officers during her PAMPANITO's bow, missing by only a few yards. six war patrols, Commander Paul E. Commander Frank W Fenno. operated as part of a wolf-pack consisting of USS GROWLER (SS-215) and USS SEALION II (SS-315) . On the morning of September 12th, 1944 the pack attacked a convoy carrying war production materials of oil and raw rubber. Unknown to the submarine skippers, the convoy also carried over 2,000 British and Australian prisoners of war. Many of the ships in the convoy were sunk by the pack including the two ships carrying the POWs. SEALION sank the RAKUYO MARU, which carried over 1,300 POWs, and PAMPANITO sank the KACHIDOKI MARU which carried 900 POWs. The three subs then left the area to pursue the scattered ships in the convoy. On September 15, PAM PAN ITO moved back to the area of the original attack and found men clinging to makeshift rafts. As the sub moved closer, the men were heard to be shouting in English. These men were the POW survivors of RAKUYO MARU sunk four days earlier by SEALION. PAMPANITO was able to pick up 73 men and called in three other subs in the area. SEALION picked up 54 men, QUEEN FISH rescued 18 men and BARB rescued 14. Of the 1,300 men on RAKUYO MARU sunk by SEALlON, 159 were rescued by the four subs. The Japanese rescued an additional 136 men for a total of 295 survivors. Of the 900 men on the KACHIDOKI MARU sunk by PAMPANITO, 656 men were rescued by the Japanese and taken to camps in Japan. Over 500 of these men were released by American troops at the end of the war. Allied POWs are pulled from makeshift rafts PAM PAN ITO went on to make three more successful patrols in the South China Sea, September 15, 1944. during the war before being retired from active service. Follow­ ing the war she served as a training ship forthe Naval Reserve and was eventually transferred to The National Maritime Mu­ seum Association for public display.     Cameron Harrington John Bishop Periods 1,2 T Michael Bircumshaw US Navy Submarine Service 1956­1976 2016 T Michael Bircumshaw T Michael Bircumshaw was born on the 18th of May, 1939 at 2:14 AM. It was a Thursday and slightly overcast. At barely 17 years of age in 1956, he ditched the last one and a half years of High School and enlisted in the US Navy as a Seaman Recruit (E­1). His first deployment following Boot Camp began in October of 1956 and lasted until April of 1960, during which time he had been stationed aboard a Fleet Tanker, the USS Aucilla AO­56, home ported in Barcelona, Spain. During his tour aboard he developed an interest in the Submarine Service due to the influence of his Commanding Officer, Captain Eli T Reich, a WWII Submariner who commanded the USS Sealion SS­315 and sank the Japanese Battleship, Kongo, with 880 men aboard. In addition to this he also sank a Jap Destroyer and a POW Ship. Captain Eli T Reich had personally written the names of the 4 men he lost when the Japanese bombed and sank the USS Sealion SS­195, where he served as Chief Engineer. The Sealion was the first Submarine sank in WWII while it was in overhaul in Cavite Bay, Philippines on the 10th of December, 1941. It is reported that upon sinking the Japanese ship, Kongo, Eli T Reich said “880 of those yellow bastards for 4 of my Sailors, we are still not even.” Reich’s actions had a major influence on T Michael Bircumshaw.

    Interviewee: Norman “Bud” Arcement Interviewer: Thomas Saylor Date: 12 September 2001 Location: Arcement home in May Township, Washington County, MN Transcribed by: Dan Borkenhagen, June 2002 Edited by: Thomas Saylor, August 2002 Norman "Bud" Arcement was born 16 November 1922 in Raceland, Louisina. After leaving school in 1936, he lived in the New Orleans area, working at several sugar refineries. In November 1942 he joined the US Navy and was sent to San Diego, California, for Basic Training, and in early 1943 to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for advanced training as an electrician. At the conclusion of electrician school Bud volunteered for the submarine service and in November 1943 was sent to New London, Connecticut, for this training. Here Bud joined the crew of a new submarine, the USS Pampanito (SS-383), and spent the next two months on sea trials and training exercises in the Atlantic. The Pampanito left Portsmouth, New Hampshire, sailed through the Panama Canal, and arrived in Pearl Harbor in February 1944; she left on her first war patrol the following month. Between March 1944 and April 1945 the Pampanito completed six war patrols, and Bud Arcement was on every one of them. As electrician's mate, Bud worked in the maneuvering room, where the submarine's changes in speed were made in response to orders from the conning tower, bridge, or control room. Pampanito patrolled from the Central Pacific to the Indian Ocean, and from the coast of Japan to Australia; during her six patrols she sank six Japanese vessels and damaged four others. In addition, in September 1944, Pampanito rescued 73 Australian and British POWs from a Japanese ship previously torpedoed by American submarines.
