This research took place in Elassona basin, in Thessaly, where two lignite deposits have been found, but the exploitation of them has not started yet. Multiple criteria have been analysed (geological, hydrogeo- logical, hydrological, hydrochemical etc) with the purpose of estimating the changes that will be caused during the mining activities in the area. The difficulties that the surface and groundwater cause to the lignite ex- ploitation are also examined. Key Words mining, aquifers, hydrogeology, surface run-off, groundwater Introduction • The Paleozoic gneiss with acid intrusions of Elassona basin is located in Thessaly, Central granites, which forms the western boundary of Greece. It is crossed by the Titarisios River, which the basin. drains an area of 107.75 km². The geological base- ment of the basin belongs to the Pelagonian Hydrogeological settings Zone.. This led to a rapid cooling of relations between the Greek and German governments. We compile a new index of public acrimony between Germany and Greece based on newspaper reports and internet search terms. This information is combined with historical maps on German war crimes during the occupation between 1941 and 1944. During months of open conflict between German and Greek politicians, German car sales fell markedly more than those of cars from other countries. This was especially true in areas affected by German reprisals during World War II: areas where German troops committed massacres and destroyed entire villages curtailed their purchases of German cars to a greater extent during conflict months than other parts of Greece. We conclude that cultural aversion was a key determinant of purchasing behavior, and that memories of past conflict can affect economic choices in a time-varying fashion. These findings are compatible with behavioral models emphasizing the importance of salience for individual decision- making. • Hydrogeological Conditions Associated with the Future Exploitation of Lignite Mine in Potamia Basin, Thessaly, Central Greece''
''HYDROGEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FUTURE EXPLOITATION OF LIGNITE MINE IN POTAMIA BASIN, THESSALY, CENTRAL GREECE'', E. VASSILIOU1, I. KOUMANTAKIS1 and D. DIMITRAKOPOULOS2 1National Technical University of Athens, School of Mining Engineering and Metallurgy, Department of Geological Science, Heroon Polytechniou 9, 15780 Zografou, Athens , Greece; :[email protected] 2Public Power Corporation of Creece, Mining Engineer, Kifisou&Dirahiou 89, 10443 Athens; Greece Abstract: In Potamia basin, in central Greece, two deposits of 160x106 tn of lignite, have been found. The exploitation process of the future open lignite mines is highly connected to the existence of surface and ground water in the area. In this paper the hydrogeological conditions and the hydrodynamic status of ground and surface water of the basin are described. A water management system of the water coming from dewatering process is suggested. Key words: Lignite deposits, dewatering, open pit exploitation, water status. Introduction Potamia basin is located in central Thessaly, Greece. Two lignite deposits, Domeniko and Amourio, of 160x106 tn, have been found there (Dimitriou D. 1997). The basin of Potamia is crossed by the Titarisios river, which drains an area of 85km2 . The existence of Titarisios river with its often destructive floodings, combined with the indications of an important groundwater-bearing strata in the basin, made necessary the investigation of the hydrologic and the hydrogeological conditions of the basin, within the framework of preliminary studies concerning the exploitability of the deposits. The aim of this study is to determine the degree to which the future mine will be influenced by the existence of ground and surface water.

He has been for me an invaluable teacher, not just of research skills, but also, and most importantly, of those non- cognitive skills and attitudes so necessary for the completion of a PhD, for working in academia and for life in general: trust in one's self, perseverance and the habit of thinking broadly, before solving the inevitable constrained optimization problems. The comments of my readers, Albrecht Glitz, Stelios Michalopoulos and Luigi Pascali were crucial for turning my research proposal to a completed thesis. I am indebted to Ran Abramitzky, Alberto Alesina and Davide Cantoni for their comments on the job market paper. I also owe thanks to Nathan Nunn for hosting me at Harvard for a year. I would like to thank seminar participants in Brown, Harvard, Lucerne (SEA), Naxos (CRETE), Northwestern, NYU (NEWEPS3), Stanford, Toulouse (ESEM), UPF and Vanderbilt for their constructive feedback on different chapters of the dissertation. A big thanks to Marta Araque and Laura Agust´ı,for their accessibility and efficiency, which made every administrative step of the PhD easier.

The aim of the present study was to examine the activity. In addition, the total polyphenolic content (TPC) of the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of 21 types of honey honey types seemed to contribute to the antibacterial activity derived from Mount Olympus (Mt. Olympus), a region with against P. aeruginosa. Furthermore, some of the tested honey great plant biodiversity. The antibacterial activity was exam- types exhibited potent free radical scavenging activity against ined against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) DPPH and ABTS•+ radicals, which was greater than that of and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) by the agar Manuka honey. The results indicated that not only the quantity, well diffusion assay and the determination of the minimum but also the quality of the polyphenols were responsible for inhibitory concentration (MIC). The antioxidant activity was the antioxidant activity. Moreover, four honey types exhibiting assessed by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) great antioxidant activity were converted to powder using and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid a freeze drying method.

Since the area did not rupture by strong earthquakes in the instrumental period of seismicity, it is of great interest to understand the seismotectonics and source properties Citation: Papadopoulos, G.A.; of these earthquakes. We combined relocated hypocenters, inversions of teleseismic P-waveforms Agalos, A.; Karavias, A.; and of InSAR data, and moment tensor solutions to produce three fault models. The first shock Triantafyllou, I.; Parcharidis, I.; ◦ ◦ (Mw = 6.3) occurred in a fault segment of strike 314 and dip NE41 . It caused surface subsidence Lekkas, E. Seismic and Geodetic −40 cm and seismic slip 1.2–1.5 m at depth ~10 km. The second earthquake (Mw = 6.2) occurred to Imaging (DInSAR) Investigation of the NW on an antithetic subparallel fault segment (strike 123◦, dip SW44◦). Seismic slip of 1.2 m the March 2021 Strong Earthquake − Sequence in Thessaly, Central Greece.

  • Leonnatus's Campaign of 322 BC
ELECTRUM Vol. 14 Kraków 2008 Sławomir Sprawski LEONNATUS’S CAMPAIGN OF 322 BC In the spring of 322 Leonnatus, one of Alexander the Great’s closest companions and the satrap of Hellespontine Phrygia, crossed over from Asia to Macedonia and marched south towards Lamia. His intention was to help Antipater, besieged in the walls of Lamia by the army of the Greek allies. He did not reach his destination; he was killed in a cavalry battle against the Greek forces. His campaign was one episode in the war which began in 323 and which is called the Greek or Lamian War. Leonnatus’s campaign has attracted only marginal interest of researchers so far. Scant source information means that the authors of most publications restrict themselves to a few sentences about this event. A lack of detailed data in source texts means that contemporary historians disagree on the route which Leonnatus took, how far south he marched and where he fought his last battle. Most publications do not go beyond saying that the battle took place on the Thessalian lowlands, where the Greeks managed to catch up with Leonnatus’s forces. In his otherwise outstanding work, Berve mistakenly has Leonnatus die at Crannon, a place in the middle of Thessaly, where a famous battle that decided the outcome of the war was fought several months later. Arnold Schaefer in his classic book Demosthenes und seine Zeit points out that the battle took place not far from Meliteia, at the foot of Mount Othrys. According to him, Leonnatus was killed on the wetlands on the River Enipeus.
