It’s been a big year in climbing – from Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson’s epic saga on the Dawn Wall to the tragic loss of Dean Potter, one of the sport’s all-time greats. In our 10th year, the REEL ROCK Film Tour will celebrate them all with an incredible lineup of films that go beyond the headlines to stories that are both intimate and awe-inspiring. HIGH and MIGHTY 20 mins High ball bouldering – where a fall could lead to serious injury – is not for the faint of heart. • “What Does 13 Look Like?” Rabbi Judith Schindler Mint Museum/Council for Children’S Rights June 11, 2015
“What Does 13 Look Like?” Rabbi Judith Schindler Mint Museum/Council for Children’s Rights June 11, 2015 What does 13 look like? 13 can be a tumultuous time in life. Entering the teenage years and leaving the security of childhood can be fearful and frightening. Teens’ eyes are opened to adult realities. They face physically maturing bodies, body image issues, school pressure, peer pressure, life pressure. They witness life on the web where parental screens can no longer keep out the harsh words of social media and they see life on the streets where parents cannot cover their teen’s eyes to harsh realities and enticements that could easily lead one down a detrimental path. What should 13 look like? In Judaism, 13 is a monumental milestone. It is the age of Bar and Bat Mitzvah – an age I know well. Almost every Saturday for the past 20 years, I have officiated at the ceremony of one or two 13 year olds leading a service on their own. Almost every week, I study and talk with several of them. I even have my own 13 year old son in my home. In Judaism, 13 is a time of responsibility. 13 marks the beginning of Jewish adulthood. 13 is an age of being able to make moral choices, of being able to make positive choices. Anne Frank received a gift on her 13th birthday from her father. She received a diary in which she recorded words of hope and inspiration amidst the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam during the most horrific time in history.

My message isn’t ‘Start climbing,’ it’s ‘Find something you love and keep doing it.’” Ashima Shiraishi October 2020 Dear Pines Students, Staff, and Families, It’s a great pleasure for me to say that we have experienced a wonderful start to this new school year. As we have pulled together to create the best possible scenario for our students, staff and entire school community, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank everyone for their time and energy as we have accomplished what may have seemed unlikely just several weeks ago. I understand that some of the outcomes tied to this situation may still be beyond our control; yet, I am #PinesProud of what we’ve been able to do together, in-person as well as virtually, as an entire school community. Who better to teach us about embracing new challenges while growing stronger outside of our comfort zones than Ashima Shiraishi, the author of our October Book of the Month, How to Solve a Problem: The Rise (and Falls) of a Rock-Climbing Champion? Ashima Shiraishi, started climbing at Rat Rock, a boulder 15 feet high and 40 feet wide, located at the south end of Central Park when she was 6 years old. When the New York weather got too cold in late fall/winter, she honed her talents indoors at gyms in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Nice to watch you climb Alex. You topped four of the five problems in very good style. How did it go for you, how did you feel? Alex Puccio: It went pretty well, I had a little bit of a technical that me and bunch of people feel like I should have won. But I didn’t- I’ve had technicals the past couple of years and I’ve never won one. Whatever, it happens. So I flashed four of them, the one I didn’t do I asked a judge if the arete was on when I was on it, I pointed to it, the whole crowd even saw it. Neely Quinn: Yeah we saw. Alex Puccio: I said “Is this on?”, and he answer was “No, there is black tape”. And then she said “But there is a blue wall. The blue wall is on”. In that position you can’t see around the arete, but my question was “Is this arete on?”, and then “No there is black tape”. And that’s why I avoided it, and fell. After I fell, I realized that there was another arete.

For Immediate Release: January 4, 2016 Press Contacts: Natalie Raabe, (212) 286-6591 Molly Erman, (212) 286-7936 Adrea Piazza, (212) 286-4255 As the Movie Business Founders, Adam Fogelson Tries to Reinvent the System In the January 11, 2016, issue of The New Yorker, in “The Mogul in the Middle” (p. 36), Tad Friend profiles Adam Fogelson, the chair- man of Hollywood’s newest studio, STX Entertainment, which is on a mission to change the movie business. Fogelson, forty-eight, came up as a marketer at Universal Pictures, which he ran from 2009 to 2013 before being fired—coincidentally just moments after green-light- ing “Jurassic World,” which became the third-highest-grossing film of all time. After leaving Universal, he saw an opportunity to prove that his idea about filmmaking was right. He became the chairman of STX, which was founded by Bob Simonds, in 2014, and set about dis- rupting the floundering filmmaking business, which has increasingly come to rely on big-budget, blockbuster franchises to insure a return on investment. “With Simonds’s checkbook, Fogelson was going to demonstrate that you could build a studio without theme parks and television networks to help you market your films, and without anything like the two or three thousand people most studios employ,” Friend writes. “He was going to pick the right films, spend less to make them, spend just as much to market them, and win back audiences who’d forsworn the moviegoing habit.” He was going to save the industry. And he didn’t expect much thanks.

CREATING PE CLASS: CLIMBING Interactive Qualifying Project Report completed in partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Science degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA Submitted to: Professor Torbjorn S. Bergstrom (advisor) Students Signatures Ian M. Costanzo _____________________ Jennifer G. Legaspi _____________________ Anselm J. Mak _____________________ ___________________ _________ Advisor signature Date i ABSTRACT The scope of this Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) is to determine the feasibility and put into practice the opportunity to earn physical education credit at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) through rock climbing. Interviews with the athletic department and local climbing gym have been carried out to gain a better understanding of what a climbing oriented PE course should entail. Following those interviews, an alpha version of the class was developed to lay the groundwork for a budget and a curriculum. Alongside this alpha phase, a survey was sent out to the students of WPI to ask the student body about the state of physical education at WPI and to learn their opinions about the possibility of climbing for PE credit. Going into C Term, the project entered into a beta phase. Student volunteers helped smooth out curriculum and class dynamics. Potential agreements were explored between the athletic department and Central Rock Gym (CRG). D Term will see the final budget decisions and making climbing a formal option for PE starting in the 2014-2015 academic year. ii AUTHORSHIP Ian M.
