ANALYSIS Poor White (1920) Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) “Hugh McVey, a telegraph operator at Pickleville, near Bidwell, Ohio, is isolated by his shyness from the people around him, whom he hopes to relieve of their back-breaking toil in cabbage planting. He invents a mechanical planter, but Steve Hunter exploits Hugh and the country people by causing them to invest in a company that, like the planter, is a failure. Hugh’s next invention, a corn cutter and a contrivance for loading coal cars, are so successful as to make Steve a millionaire and Bidwell a booming manufacturing town. Hugh, even in prosperity, finds it impossible to bridge the gap between himself and others. His shyness is appreciated only by Clara Butterworth, who marries him after her experiences with other men have left her with a loathing for their brutality. Bidwell acquires the characteristics of a modern industrial town, with foreign workers crowding its streets, and such craftsmen as Joe Wainsworth, who stand out against the factory, are broken in spirit. Pioneer democracy gives way to class distinctions based on wealth. Bosses and agitators appear, and there are strikes, violence, and killings. Hugh finally awakens from his calculations with gears and levers to a moral evaluation of the corrupting effect on Bidwell and its people.” James D. Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada ii WILLIAM FAULKNER AND SHERWOOD ANDERSON: A STUDY OF A LITERARY RELATIONSHIP ABSTRACT This study explores the nature and extent of Sherwood Anderson's influence upon William Faulkner. It demonstrates, through the use of the comparative method, that Anderson's influence is a major and continuous one. The early New Orlean Sketches strongly echo and, at times, imitate Anderson's work. Faulkner's first novel, Soldiers' Pay, was not only written at Anderson's suggestion but also published through his influence. In Mosquitoes, Faulkner closely modeled his main character after Anderson. Anderson helped Faulkner to organize some of the "folk" material in that novel. Faulkner's early use of negro characters to embody a kind of sane, healthy alternative to the world of the whites may well have been encouraged by Anderson's example. -

SOME OF THE EPISODES IN THIS BOOK WERE PRINTED IN THE SEVEN ARTS, THE MASSES AND THE LITTLE REVIEW TO WHICH MAGAZINES THE AUTHOR MAKES DUE ACKNOWLEDGMENT. INTRODUCTION By ERNEST BOYD Sherwood Anderson was born at Clyde, Ohio, in 1876, and it was not until his fortieth year that his first book, Windy McPher- son’s Son, was published. When that novel appeared its author was scarcely known beyond the small circle of readers who had seen his powerful stories in the little reviews which can afford out of their poverty to have the courage of their convictions. He was a con- tributor from the outset to The Little Review, whose files contain so many of the names which now give contemporary American litera- ture a quality and a significance that are truly national. It is note- worthy that many of the chapters in Winesburg, Ohio, the book which made his name, are reprinted from that and other periodicals of his experimental years. The legend is that Sherwood Anderson had “a trunkful” of fiction when he made his bid for fame with Windy McPherson’s Son in 1916, and the following year he issued Marching Men, followed In 1918 by a volume of poems, excellently entitled Mid-American Chants, That was the sum of Sherwood An- derson’s work when he published the book which now receives the consecration of being included in a library of the world’s modern classics. -

Structure and Unity in the Novels of Sherwood Anderson
RICE UNIVERSITY STRUCTURE AND UNITY IN THE NOVELS OP SHERWOOD ANDERSON MARILEE MAY WOOD A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Directors signature: Houston, Texas May 12, 196k- ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to study Sherwood Anderson's novels, showing how the unity of the works is destroyed by the author*s limited ability to develop and sustain characterizations and themes. Anderson was uniquely limited by personal experience, and when he stepped beyond the bounds of this experience in his development of themes and characterizations, his writing became incon¬ sistent and unconvincing. Chapter I shows how in his first novel, Windv McPherson’s Son. Anderson worked within his limitations as he wrote the first section of the work. The early part of Windv deals with the small town milieu, and Anderson's writing is coherent, unified, and forceful* However, in the second half of the novel, the emphasis falls on the intellectual and social problems of an urban society of which Anderson was not really a part. Thus the unity of the novel is broken as the author deals with unfamiliar material. In Chapter II Anderson's fourth novel, Poor White, is analyzed. This is another novel in which the opening sections succeed as Anderson tells the story of Hugh McVey and shows the effects of industrialization on a small midvjestern town. In the midst of this novel Anderson suddenly begins to develop a new set of characters and crops the themes of social and economic development. This break in the unity of the novel is never healed although Anderson does try to return to his original themes as the novel ends. -

We at Steppenwolf understand the difference a teacher can make in the lives of his or her students. It was a great teacher that gave the founding members of Steppenwolf the courage and confidence to express themselves creatively. We want to help you make that difference with your students. The Steppenwolf Arts Exchange Program presents to you a new theatrical adaptation of Winesburg, Ohio based on the book by Sherwood Anderson. It is about a boy coming of age in a small Midwestern town, surrounded by ordinary people who gradually reveal that they are burdened and elated by extraordinary passions. The study guide materials we have provided contain contextual information that will help in connecting the elements of the production to your year’s curriculum. We realize that not every classroom is the same and our audience varies in age, so the study guide tends to cover a lot of ground. You can select, edit and copy to meet your own needs and timeline. Dee • http://meaghand.com For Fletcher and Kit, my two Miracles Introduction The following narrative sets forth the events surrounding the death of American author Sherwood Anderson (1876–1941), which occurred on March 8, 1941, in the Canal Zone. Although often cited in broad terms, Anderson’s bizarre demise has never been presented as a full- blown episode in a life and career characterized by the unconventional. Though possessing little formal education, Anderson had developed a prodigious native talent by means of voracious reading and unrelenting experimentation. Having worked frst as an advertising salesman and copywriter and then as a businessman, by late 1912, at age thirty-six, he felt confdent enough in his self-developed skills to pursue a writing career. Although he owned his own business, was married, and had three children, he left his home in Elyria, Ohio, for Chicago in early 1913. (His family followed soon thereafter.) He had two completed nov- els in manuscript; however, he continued to work in advertising for his primary livelihood. In the winter of 1915–16 he achieved full realization of his evolving literary style and over the next three years produced the series of innovative short stories that were published together in 1919 as Winesburg, Ohio. -

Anderson's plays represent a little-known facet of his career and, indeed, in relation to the whole of his literary output the plays are insignificant.
