For Anderson the play marked the culmination of his efforts at playwriting. He had adapted his finest collection of stories for the stage, and it would now be the responsibility of the theatre and particularly of his producer, Jasper Deeter, to see that the play succeeded. Deeter produced the play at the Hedgerow Theatre in 1937. Anderson had no doubts concerning the merits of his play. For Christopher Sergel, however, Sherwood Anderson's reading was only a beginning. -

Language: English Access: Open for research Administrative Information Acquisition: Purchases, 1968-1973 (R4498, R5102, R6030) Processed by: Michael Ramsey, 2010 Repository: The University of Texas at Austin, Harry Ransom Center Anderson, Sherwood, 1876-1941 Biographical Sketch Sherwood Anderson was born in Camden, Ohio, on September 13, 1876, as the third of seven children. His parents, Irwin M. and Emma Anderson, moved from town to town frequently after the failure of Anderson's father's business. Anderson attended school only intermittently in order to help his family's finances by working a variety of odd jobs including stable boy, house painter, and newsboy. He left school at the age of 14. His father (a former Union soldier) worked as a harness maker and house painter after the family finally settled down in Clyde, Ohio. Anderson moved to Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 17, where he worked in a factory by day and was a business student by night. He joined the National Guard in 1895 at the age of 19 and fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American war. After his service ended, Anderson returned to Ohio and finished a final year of schooling at Wittenberg College in Springfield. Anderson moved around Ohio frequently until 1904 when he married Cornelia Lane, a woman of good education and background, and fathered three children. -

The Context of Exile Motifs in Sherwood Anderson Kim, Kil-Ioong (A~ %*~1Jl: iliIi$l1*~ ~~~~f3}) 1 The relation of an individual to society as it is conceived by the subjective mind may find expression in varying degrees of tension. In theory that tension may range between two possible opposites of complete harmony at one extreme and utter rejection at the other extreme. Actually the tension would always point to a negative relation, a conflict. The conflict could be an internalized as well as manifest process. It may also involve shifting modes of perception from time to time. All the same it is always there. All creative works'[of literature necessarily touch upon this theme of social COn flict in one way or another. And it becomes all the more important for those writers who are particularly concerned with the questions of social values of his time, especially those writers inclined to depict individuals who fail to come to terms with such values. Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941), with his merits and demerits as a writer, belongs to this category of writers depicting such alienated individuals. The motif of estrange ment from society is central in his life and work. Anderson's published works include eight novels, four collections of short stories, three volumes of autobiography, three books of poems and plays, and more than three hundred articles, reviews,and essays. Out of these, the present essay concentrates on the characteristic aspects of the writer's alienated individuals in Winesburg, Ohio, Poor White,. Dark Laughter, and two autobio-. graphies, A Story Teller's Story and the posthumous Memoirs. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada ii WILLIAM FAULKNER AND SHERWOOD ANDERSON: A STUDY OF A LITERARY RELATIONSHIP ABSTRACT This study explores the nature and extent of Sherwood Anderson's influence upon William Faulkner. It demonstrates, through the use of the comparative method, that Anderson's influence is a major and continuous one. The early New Orlean Sketches strongly echo and, at times, imitate Anderson's work. Faulkner's first novel, Soldiers' Pay, was not only written at Anderson's suggestion but also published through his influence. In Mosquitoes, Faulkner closely modeled his main character after Anderson. Anderson helped Faulkner to organize some of the "folk" material in that novel. Faulkner's early use of negro characters to embody a kind of sane, healthy alternative to the world of the whites may well have been encouraged by Anderson's example. -

SOME OF THE EPISODES IN THIS BOOK WERE PRINTED IN THE SEVEN ARTS, THE MASSES AND THE LITTLE REVIEW TO WHICH MAGAZINES THE AUTHOR MAKES DUE ACKNOWLEDGMENT. INTRODUCTION By ERNEST BOYD Sherwood Anderson was born at Clyde, Ohio, in 1876, and it was not until his fortieth year that his first book, Windy McPher- son’s Son, was published. When that novel appeared its author was scarcely known beyond the small circle of readers who had seen his powerful stories in the little reviews which can afford out of their poverty to have the courage of their convictions. He was a con- tributor from the outset to The Little Review, whose files contain so many of the names which now give contemporary American litera- ture a quality and a significance that are truly national. It is note- worthy that many of the chapters in Winesburg, Ohio, the book which made his name, are reprinted from that and other periodicals of his experimental years. The legend is that Sherwood Anderson had “a trunkful” of fiction when he made his bid for fame with Windy McPherson’s Son in 1916, and the following year he issued Marching Men, followed In 1918 by a volume of poems, excellently entitled Mid-American Chants, That was the sum of Sherwood An- derson’s work when he published the book which now receives the consecration of being included in a library of the world’s modern classics. -

From the early short stories pub lished in Harpers, The Little Review, and Masses to Home Town, the last work published in his lifetime, and the posthumous Mem oirs, Sherwood Anderson returned again and again in fiction and fancy to the Clyde, Ohio, of his youth, convinced that if he under stood those experiences, the meaning of America and of American life in his time and ours would become clear. In that search he influenced the course and language of American literature in this century. "Sherwood was such a Midwesterner," Eleanor Copenhaver Anderson, herself a staunch mountain Virginian, has told me in conversation, and as members of the Society continue to explore the dimensions of the expression of that fact in his work, they ex plore, too, what is perhaps the truest expression of the Midwest in literature that we shall know. -

Structure and Unity in the Novels of Sherwood Anderson
RICE UNIVERSITY STRUCTURE AND UNITY IN THE NOVELS OP SHERWOOD ANDERSON MARILEE MAY WOOD A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Directors signature: Houston, Texas May 12, 196k- ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to study Sherwood Anderson's novels, showing how the unity of the works is destroyed by the author*s limited ability to develop and sustain characterizations and themes. Anderson was uniquely limited by personal experience, and when he stepped beyond the bounds of this experience in his development of themes and characterizations, his writing became incon¬ sistent and unconvincing. Chapter I shows how in his first novel, Windv McPherson’s Son. Anderson worked within his limitations as he wrote the first section of the work. The early part of Windv deals with the small town milieu, and Anderson's writing is coherent, unified, and forceful* However, in the second half of the novel, the emphasis falls on the intellectual and social problems of an urban society of which Anderson was not really a part. Thus the unity of the novel is broken as the author deals with unfamiliar material. In Chapter II Anderson's fourth novel, Poor White, is analyzed. This is another novel in which the opening sections succeed as Anderson tells the story of Hugh McVey and shows the effects of industrialization on a small midvjestern town. In the midst of this novel Anderson suddenly begins to develop a new set of characters and crops the themes of social and economic development. This break in the unity of the novel is never healed although Anderson does try to return to his original themes as the novel ends. -

Devon, Iowa, would have furnished forth just such a book as this…or any one of ten thousand others. The story of a small town anywhere is the story of the revolt of youth against custom-morality; with youth winning only occasionally and in secret, losing often and publicly. In the middle west the dominant morality of the crossroads is puritan inheritance. Puritanism went over to Ohio from New England with the settlers, and has taken a firmer hold on the minds and the lives of the inhabitants of the Mississippi valley than it ever had in the east…. As a challenge to the snappy short story form, with its planned proportions of flippant philosophy, epigrammatic conversation and sex danger, nothing better has come out of America than Winesburg, Ohio.” Maxwell Anderson The New Republic (25 June 1919) “Anderson is not a short story writer in so far as that implies a man who can handle the form of the short story. His metier is rather the—to qualify what alone would sound like a trifle—significant episode. Here, for example, are a number of episodes in the lives of the dwellers in a small Ohio town, in a country where farming and berry growing and merchandising occupy the people. They have no form in the sense of artifice—a bad sense in which to use the word, however. To be more accurate they have no pattern. -
