Look for the Park City native to be a strong medal contender in the slalom events and a threat to defend his Torino title in the combined. Personal Ligety is a graduate of Park City’s Winter Sports School along with fellow U.S. skier Julia Mancuso. He made an unconventional quick rise to stardom after failing to make the Park City ski team on his first try and not making the U.S. Ski Team until he was 18. PREVIEW 2019 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - 5-17 Feb World Championships return to Sweden • Åre will host the World Championships for the third time after 1954 and 2007. • Austria is the most successful country at the World Championships with 95 gold medals, 99 silver, and 92 bronze medals (286 total medals). Switzerland is next on 191 medals - 64 gold, 68 silver, and 59 bronze. • Austria have collected at least one medal at 41 of the previous 44 world championships. The only exceptions are 1934, 1938 and 1939. • Austria (149) is one medal shy of winning its 150th medal in men's events. THE THIN LINE: Life on the Edge Skier Biographies BODE MILLER Bode Miller burst onto the World Cup scene as an 18-year-old in 1996 and first gained widespread recognition when he won two silver medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the Giant Slalom and Combined events. Miller has won a total of four gold medals and one silver medal at the World Championships. In the 2004/2005 Season, Miller won his first overall FIS World Cup title, outlasting Austrian Benjamin Raich. In the 2006/07 Season, Miller finished 4th overall and won the Super G title. In May 2007, Miller announced that he was leaving the U.S. Ski Team to race as an independent. PICABO STREET One of the most prolific women’s racers to ever grace the U.S. Ski Team, Picabo Street was most definitely a ski racing personality. The native of tiny Triumph, Idaho announced her retirement from competition following the 2002 women’s Olympic downhill at Snowbasin, Utah, ending a career that included nine career World Cup victories, the 1995 and 1996 World Cup downhill discipline titles and a trio of World Championships medals to go along with her two Olympic medals, including the Super-G gold at the 1998 Nagano Games. Finally, former MBSEF athlete Laurenne Ross makes the podium in a World Cup Downhill Race. It was great fun digging through our vast photo archive to fi nd the “old photo” of Laurenne. Congratula ons Laurenne, we are very proud of you and all of our athletes. Unfortunately, this is also the me of year where some of our coaches decide to make life decisions. I would like to sincerely thank Anna Schulz, one of our Nordic Coaches, who will be returning home to the East Coast to a end graduate school this fall. Anna has been with us for two years and has done an outstanding job with our Nordic Athletes. She will be greatly missed. Her enthusiasm and zest for life are infec ous, and the friendships she has formed NOW AND THEN . Laurenne Ross, 2nd Place with our older athletes will hopefully last a life me. Technical and Tactical Implications of the new FIS Ski Specifications Ron LeMaster The FIS set off a firestorm of controversy and speculation this July when it announced that, starting in the 2012-2013 season, World Cup skis would be subject to new regulations. In an effort to increase athlete safety, FIS sought to reduce what they believe to be significant injury risk factors: the forces on skiers in the turn, the aggressiveness with which the skis interact with the snow (that is, how abruptly they engage, and how difficult it is to make them release), and overall speeds in general. Sidecut for downhill and super-G skis was also increased, as was ski length for all but slalom skis. The rule getting the most attention, almost universally negative, was an increase in the minimum sidecut radius of GS skis: 40m for men’s skis and 35m for women’s, up from 27m and 23m, respectively. Another change that has come under fire from many quarters is a reduction of the stand height – the distance between the bottom of the ski and the skier’s heel inside the boot – for downhill and super-G skis, from 50mm to 45mm. The GS ski dimensions seemed to be a big step backwards. The proposed sidecut radii haven’t been seen on race skis since the 1980s. Current World Cup competitors who tested prototype skis conforming to the proposed regulations gave them uniformly bad reviews. The turning forces were reduced as well as the skis’ aggressiveness, but at the cost of requiring techniques and tactics - such as skidding, stepping, and conservative, high lines - that look and feel dated and clumsy.
