Cosmic Vision Jainism The Cosmic Vision Kumarpal Desai Mahavir Foundation London, U.K. Desai, Kumarpal Preface Jainism : The Cosmic Vision / In 1969 I bagan writing my Ph.D. thesis on ‘Mahayogi Kumarpal Desai - Ahmedabad : Anandghanji’ and my interest in the Jain philosophy, as propounded by Mahavir Foundation, London, U.K., 2008 Yogi Anandghanji, was aroused. I had inherited the legacy of Samskar from my father Jaibhikhkhu whose 300 books were largely based on Jain lore. I read those books avidly and that expanded my horizons. The term Jain means the devotee of Jinas (Spiritual Victors). Jinas are called so because they have won victory over passions of attachment, aversion, etc. that defile the soul. As a result, they have attained omniscience and supreme bliss. They are enlightened human teachers. They are also called Tirthankaras (Ford-makers). Here in the context, ford means Tirthankara’s words and teaching which help living beings to cross the ocean of misery or transmigratory existence. In every half- cycle of Time, there flourish twenty-four Tirthankaras. A letter from Dr. Fiihrer, accompanied by a batch of impressions of inscriptions, informs me that a grant of 300 rupees from the Government of the North-western Provinces enabled him to resume his explorations at Mathura during February last. Dr. Fiihrer spent this (for excava- tions) rather insignificant sum partly on " prospecting operations" in the large Katra Mound, which is said to conceal the ruins of Kesava's ancient temple, destroyed by Aurungzebe, and partly on diggings in some unexplored portions of the Kankali Tila, which some years ago yielded the splendid collection of important Jaina inscriptions. The Katra Mound furnished none of the hoped-for Brahmanical sculptures and inscriptions, but only, as in former times, fragments belonging to a Buddhist Stupa of the Kushana period. But the results of Dr. Fiihrer's work in the Kankali Tila, were as valuable as those of 1889-93. Besides a number of smaller fragments of inscriptions, giving the names of various Jaina schools and teachers, he found a longer one, which, in spite of the omission of the reigning king's name, possesses a considerable interest, and perhaps indicates that the dates of the Kushana kings, Kanishka, Huvishka, and Yasudeva or Vasushka, must be interpreted otherwise than is usually done.

Mahavira (Niyamasara, 99) TEMPLES SEVERAL HINDU AND JAIN TEMPLES FACE DEMOLITION IN THE MANGALORE AREA Mangalore, The Supreme Court has stated that 1,201 Hindu and 17 Jain places of worship are currently under threat of being demolished because they are considered to be religious institutions that are located in public places and apparently fall under a list of unauthorized religious construction. Mohan Gowda, Hindu Jana Jagruti Vedike spokesperson stated that the government has decided to go ahead with demolishing this large number of religious structures. The verdict of the Supreme Court clearly states that all religious structures that are built after December 7, 2009 must be demolished and most of these religious structures are Hindu temples across Mangalore. With regards to those places of worship built before December 7, 2009–they will be examined case by case before a decision is made for whether they will become regularized structures, relocated or demolished. A very short notice has been given with no opportunity for appeal and the state government in its affidavit to the Supreme Court has agreed to clear all illegal religious structures by the end of this month. Gowda further stated that although the Supreme Court has allowed for temples that are over 30 years old to be regularized, the Karnataka government is simply seeking to demolish because the process of regularizing will be time consuming and not worth their time.

    ( 14 ) Journal of Indian and Buddhist Studies Vol. 54, No.3, March 2006 Moksa in Jainism -with special reference to Haribhadra Suri - Yasunori HARADA 0. Introduction In ancient India, how people could eliminate the suffering of samsara and obtain liberation (moksa) was a serious issue. This was also the case for the Jains. They developed an original theory of karma since the time of Mahavira. Umasvati (ca. 5- 6c) systematized a theory of liberation in his work, the TAAS. Within that text he describes the Jaina view of the world and karma. In the 10th chapter he explains in particular the Jaina theory of liberation. Haribhadra Suri (ca. 8c), a Jaina Svetambara monk and scholar, also discusses a theory of liberation in the 5th chapter of the Anekantavadapravesa.l)However, instead of developingUmasvati's theory of libera- tion, he criticizes the Buddhist view of momentariness (ksanikatva),in particular that of Dharmakirti (ca. 600-660AD). The present article examines the AVP, especially concerning the way in which Haribhadra Suri refutes the ksanikatva theory. In ad- dition, it compares Haribhadra Suri with his predecessor, the Digambara scholar Samantabhadra(ca. 600 AD),who takes the same view, i. e. the anekantavada. Thus this paper will shed new light on an aspect of the Jaina theory of liberation in the post-Agamic "logico-epistemological"tradition that has not as yet been studied in detail. 1. The Liberation Theory of Umasvati First, I would like to confirm the theoretical role of liberation in the TAAS. Umasvati enumerates 7 tattvas: jiva, ajiva, asrava, bandha, samvara, nirjara and moksa.2)This world, according to the TAAS, consists of jivas and ajivas.
