Depending on the season, the bus runs up to 7 times daily to Untertal, 4 times daily to Obertal and 3 times daily to Preuneggtal. There are plenty of well-signposted bus stops. SCHLADMING IN THE HOLIDAY REGION 5 days filled with alpine summits, lakes and mountain adventures IN THE HOLIDAY REGION Schladminger Tauern Höhenweg The „High Trail“ Running along the summits and ridge lines of the Schlad- minger Tauern mountains are numerous high trails, which together form a trekking tour known as the “Schladmin- ger Tauern Höhenweg”. This, in turn, represents part of Central Alpine Trail No. 02. In total, the Schladminger Tauern Höhenweg covers a distance of 70 kilometers in 7 different stages. The somewhat shorter 5-day tour spanning 45 km follows mountain trails flanking the Obertal and Untertal valleys of Rohrmoos, taking hikers on a broad loop from the Hochwurzen in Rohrmoos to the Planai in Schladming. It is also possible to enjoy the tour in the reverse direction – starting out on the Planai. Geography and Geology, University of Salzburg, Hellbrunner Straße 34, A-5020 Salzburg, Austria; normal faulting raft tectonics *) Corresponding author, [email protected] Eastern Alps Abstract N–S shortening in front of the Adriatic indenter, surface uplift and exhumation of the Tauern window area characterize the Late Oligocene to recent tectonic evolution of central sectors of the Eastern Alps. The resulting structures are typified by eastward tilted blocks, separated by extensional corridors. The eastward retreat of the subduction zone in front of the Carpathians induced strong Miocene E─W extension and basement subsidence in the Pannonian basin realm; surface uplift in the Tauern window area created E─W topographic and exhumation gradients, allowing the brittle upper crust to move along the mid-crustal ductile decollément level towards the east. Subject of research is the area between the viscous Penninic zone of the eastern Tauern Window and the over- lying brittle Austroalpine basement units with deeply eroded/inverted basins on top. We use published apatite fission track (AFT) and apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He (AHe, ZHe) data from two sections of the Hohe Tauern to the east to constrain the E─W exhumation gradient. A W–E section along the southern Northern Calcareous Alps and sections along the Mur-Mürz fault zones are included for comparison, too.

It has largely been argued that repeated erosion and glaciation sustain isostatic uplift and topography in a decaying orogen. But, some parts of the Alps may still be actively uplifting via deep lithospheric processes. We add insight to this debate by isolating the role of post- glacial topographic forcing on erosion rates. To do this, we quantify the topographic signature of past glaciation on 15 millennial scale erosion rates in previously glaciated and unglaciated catchments at the easternmost edge of the Austrian Alps. Newly measured catchment-wide erosion rates, determined from cosmogenic 10Be in river-borne quartz, correlate with basin relief and mean slope. GIS-derived slope-elevation and slope-area distributions across catchments provide clear topographic indicators of the degree of glacial preconditioning, which further correlates with erosion rates. Erosion rates in the eastern-most, non-glaciated basins range from 40 to 150 mm/ky and likely reflect underlying tectonic forcings in this 20 region, which have previously been attributed to recent (post 5 Ma) uplift.
