  • Chiptuning Intellectual Property: Digital Culture Between Creative Commons and Moral Economy
Chiptuning Intellectual Property: Digital Culture Between Creative Commons and Moral Economy Martin J. Zeilinger York University, Canada [email protected] Abstract This essay considers how chipmusic, a fairly recent form of alternative electronic music, deals with the impact of contemporary intellectual property regimes on creative practices. I survey chipmusicians’ reusing of technology and content invoking the era of 8-bit video games, and highlight points of contention between critical perspectives embodied in this art form and intellectual property policy. Exploring current chipmusic dissemination strategies, I contrast the art form’s links to appropriation-based creative techniques and the ‘demoscene’ amateur hacking culture of the 1980s with the chiptune community’s currently prevailing reliance on Creative Commons licenses for regulating access. Questioning whether consideration of this alternative licensing scheme can adequately describe shared cultural norms and values that motivate chiptune practices, I conclude by offering the concept of a moral economy of appropriation-based creative techniques as a new framework for understanding digital creative practices that resist conventional intellectual property policy both in form and in content. Keywords: Chipmusic, Creative Commons, Moral Economy, Intellectual Property, Demoscene Introduction The chipmusic community, like many other born-digital creative communities, has a rich tradition of embracing and encouraged open access, collaboration, and sharing. It does not like to operate according to the logic of informational capital and the restrictive enclosure movements this logic engenders. The creation of chipmusic, a form of electronic music based on the repurposing of outdated sound chip technology found in video gaming devices and old home computers, centrally involves the reworking of proprietary cultural materials.

00:00:00 Music Transition “Crown Ones” off the album Stepfather by People Under The Stairs 00:00:05 Oliver Wang Host Hello, I’m Oliver Wang. 00:00:07 Morgan Host And I’m Morgan Rhodes. You’re listening to Heat Rocks. Rhodes 00:00:09 Oliver Host Every episode we invite a guest to join us to talk about a heat rock, AKA an album that sizzles, but today we are going multimedia with a new series where we talk about music and movies. We’re calling it Music and Popcorn—shout-out to Morgan for coming up with that— and we’re kicking it off by taking a trip up north to the Santa Cruz boardwalk, and taking a creepy escalator down into Jordan Peele’s 2019 film, Us. 00:00:35 Music Music “I Got 5 On It (Tethered Mix)” off the album I Got 5 On It by Luniz. Slow, somewhat eerie instrumentals and vocalizations. 00:00:55 Oliver Host If someone in 2016 had asked for your opinion about Jordan Peele, you might be forgiven if you had first asked, “Wait, was he the tall guy or the short guy from Key and Peele?” [Morgan laughs.] Prior to his breakout debut film, Get Out, Peele was best known for his comedy skits, alongside partner Keegan Michael Key. But with Get Out, Peele showcased all manner of talents as a screenwriter and director by crafting one of the most lauded horror-slash-thriller films in recent years. In 2019, Peele was back with Us, a dark and at times darkly funny meditation on race, class, and equality, and the lethal shortcomings of voice-activated smart devices.

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

  • Roots Report: an Interview with Weird Al
Roots Report: An Interview with Weird Al Okee dokee folks… Almost exactly one year ago I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Zeiterion in New Bedford. In all honesty it was one of the BEST shows I have EVER seen. It was fun, funny, energetic … basically AWESOME! I had a grin on my face the whole time. Weird Al is a comical/musical genius. I know a lot of you will scoff at this and probably think what he does is easy. It’s not, but he makes it seem that way as he effortlessly genre-shifts and works lyrical magic with the lampoons. Weird Al is bringing his Mandatory Fun Show to the Providence Performing Arts Center on September 14, and I had the opportunity to talk to him about his tour, music and upcoming show. Before I did the interview I asked folks on Facebook what they would like to know about Al, and I based my all of questions on those responses. John Fuzek: What was your favorite video to film? Weird Al: Probably “Tacky” (a parody of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams). It was also one of the easier videos to film because it was all done in one shot. Once we had the DP and the crew rehearsed, my celebrity friends came in. We told them where their marks were, everybody was professional and we knocked it out in a couple of hours. It was great. I got to work with some of the funniest people I know: Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho and Eric Stonestreet … you know, they’re in my address book.

  • Sketches of the Inchoate by Charles Davi
Sketches of the Inchoate By Charles Davi 2 The outlines of a day It's Syttende Mai, we're in the living room of our apartment, there's a TV mounted on a white wall. You take your earrings off, which are large, and silver, and quite reflective, your hair is blonde. Our bedroom is sunny, as is the entire apartment. I watch your fingers, as you take your earrings off - Your ear is almost glowing a bit in the light, and so I can see the faint outlines of the blood vessels branching under your skin, causing your earlobes to look like small opaque gumdrops, in context. It's all a bit disorienting, leaving me relieved, we're finally home - You seem so comfortable, undressing, slowly and casually, with something in between indifference and affection, occasionally, making eye-contact, smiling. Though I'm borderline offended by your pantyhose, which take me by sur- prise, given what you're wearing is, otherwise, tantamount to a costume: The translucent, brown top is high-waisted, looks a bit cheap, like a beer bottle. I can nonetheless see the outlines of your underwear in the bright light of the room, which compensates. Our apartment is not that big, though certainly not small - My snobbishness creeps into almost everything, including our home, though you are the rare exception, leaving even my exhausting pretensions exhausted, unable to find an unflattering aspect of your appearance, or behavior. The bedroom has what look like floor to ceiling windows, and the room is filled with typical Scandinavian summer sunlight: Ultra-bright and white.

On “The Orchard,” Wright penned many of the songes. “Fellowship,” which is available now, is a nod to her roots in gospel on the one hand and her gospel of eclecticism on the other. Fruit Bats will be unveil- ing album number five this month. “TRIPPER” is a “collection of stories and thoughts on rambling, reinvention, avoidance of the apocalypse, suburban malaise, anti-Babylon back-to-the-landers, chaparral scrub, lopsided relation- ships, Florida beach bums, Stevie Nicks gypsy temptresses who smell like cloves, banishment from a Utopia, the attainment of enlightenment, and going home.” The Holmes Brothers -- With their soulful blend of gospel, country and rhythm & blues, the Holmes Brothers’ music is universal in its appeal and the band has Raul Midón won multiple Blues Music Awards.
