C.A.K.E.: Circus Ambassadors Promoting Kindness and Empathy is Circus Juventas' student council. Last year, C.A.K.E. held 15-minute monthly meetings for students ages 12+ to discuss topics under the big top, but this year, those meetings will be biweekly on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. for an hour in the Artistic Department (see the meetings scheduled for fall session below). These meetings are our students' chance to bring forth circus-related concerns/issues or ask questions. Our students always have a voice at CJ, and C.A.K.E. meetings offer a safe, designated space to use that voice. There are a few other changes coming in our C.A.K.E. program, including mentorship programs to help those new to spring or summer show performing. We will announce our mentorship application/nomination process soon. FALL SESSION C.A.K.E. MEETINGS: Biweekly on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. September 26 October 10 October 24 November 14 New classes and things to note: Acrobatic Jump Rope – Last seen in 2014’s Neverland, this act melds acrobatic tumbling with face-paced jump roping. Aerial Conditioning – This class has a new level. Chinese Poles – Last seen in 2009’s Yulong, this acrobatic act brings the art of pole climbing to a new level. Creative Dance/Pilates for Circus – A class focusing on both the art of dance creation and circus-based Pilates training. Dance for Boys – Dance is for boys too! Check out this new class focusing on athletic dance movements—girls are welcome too. Esprit – Last seen in 2014’s Neverland, this aerial act combines partner work with lyrical dance. Girls’ Master Intensive – Prior experience in gymnastics, dance, or the like? Quickly develop your circus skills in this class! Hand to Hand – Previously a summer show act, Hand to Hand has a new 0100 level. Hanging Perch – This class has new 0200 level. Intro to Solo Trapeze – This new class teaches the basics of trapeze to those with little or no aerial experience. Mexican Cloud Swing – This class has new 0200 level. My Grown-Up and Me – A Toddlers program for 2 to 3 year olds and their grown-up! Power Mini Tramp – We’re bringing back this powerful summer show act, where high-level acrobats reach incredible heights. Revolving Ladder – Last seen in 2011’s Grimm, bravery meets comedy in this acrobatic clowning act performed on a suspended ladder. Sling – A brand-new, intermediate-level aerial act at CJ that combines the grace of Hammock with the power of Silks. Stilt Walking – This class has a new 1000 level. Table Comedy – An everyday table transforms into an acrobatic prop in this comedic summer show act. Trick Unicycle – Our advanced unicycle performers are taking their skills to a whole new level in this summer show act. Wall Trampoline Parkour – This year, our Wall Trampoline takes on a parkour twist! 3 Staff Changes at Circus Juventas! Jeannene Clark Meet Jeannene, our new School Coordinator! Jeannene moved to the Twin Cities in 2016 after graduating with her BA in English Literature from Cornell College. During her time at Cornell, she studied abroad in Amman, Jordan, adding Arabic to the list of languages she's determined to learn. She also had the opportunity to play the bassoon and the steel drums throughout her time there. Her college steel drums band, Pandemonium, performed in several Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans in 2016! Once in the Twin Cities, she served as an Americorps volunteer for two years before joining Circus Juventas as the School Coordinator. She really enjoys baking in her free time, and is always looking for new recipes to try out! Katy McEwen Katy McEwen will be continuing as our Lead Theater Coach and Script Writer for our summer show, and she will also be taking on an expanded role as the Artistic Department Communications Manager for Theater and Special Programming as well as joining the Toddler/Kinder program as Parent Liaison and coach. During her additional time under the big top, Katy hopes to sleuth out the difference between the Mexican cloud swing and regular the cloud swing. 4 Circus Juventas presents... SUMMER 2019 THEME Something is amiss in the Black Forest… The fairy tale world is thrown for a loop when Russian sorceress Baba Yaga and her sisters brew up a devilish plan to tangle the traditional tales and sow the seeds of epic chaos, forcing beloved fairy tale characters to band together and strive to set their stories straight. This summer at Circus Juventas, comedy, magic, and romance abound as we return to the world of international fairy tales for the first time since the 2011 blockbuster hit Grimm. Will Jack conquer his beanstalk? Will the Little Mermaid finally make it to shore? Will Pinocchio achieve real -boy status? Will Sleeping Beauty EVER wake up? And what about that wicked little fellow with the strangest name? Find out next August in this magical mix-up for the millennia that’s not to be missed. SPRING 2019 THEME FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD! Coming in 2019, Circus Juventas will be serving up a delectable buffet of artistic delights honoring all things culinary in our Spring Celebration Performances, Bon Appétit! PROGRAM Peking Dreams EKING (known today as Beijing), the capital of the People’s Republic of China, is a Pfamous historical and cultural city with a history spanning 1,000 years and a wealth of precious Chinese cultural heritage, including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven. Acrobatic art, Chinese circus, and Peking opera are Chinese cultural treasures and are beloved among the people of Peking. These art forms combine music, acrobatics, performance, mime, and dance and share many similarities with Western culture. Foreign tourists walking along the streets or strolling through the parks of Peking can often hear natives sing beautiful Peking opera, see them play diabolo or perform other acrobatics. Peking Dreams , incorporating elements of acrobatics, Chinese circus, and Peking opera, invites audiences into an artistic world full of history and wonder. The actors’ flawless performance, colorful costumes, and elaborate makeup will astound audiences with visual and aural treats. PROGRAM Opening Acrobatic Master and His Pupils The Peking courtyard is bathed in bright moonlight.     LOCAL HISTORY WOODSTOCK & MCHENRY COUNTY Woodstock and the Circus by Kirk Dawdy Soon after its establishment in 1852 Woodstock became a consistent destination for circus shows. Several different outfits visited Woodstock over the years, including the Burr Robbins, Forepaugh, Cole, W.B. Reynolds, Gollmar Brothers, Ringling Brothers and Barnum circuses. The first documented circus in Woodstock was “Yankee” Robinson’s Quadruple Show in October of 1856. Robinson, a direct descendant of Pastor John Robinson, religious leader of the "Pilgrim Fathers" who journeyed to North America aboard the Mayflower, established his first travelling circus in 1854, two years prior to visiting Woodstock. An ardent abolitionist, Robinson included in his circuses minstrel shows based on Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In fact, Robinson was the very first to ever take a dramatized version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the road. In “Yankee” Robinson’s 1856 Woodstock visit, in addition to presenting a band of African-American minstrels performing in a production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, he also exhibited live animals (including an elephant), a museum of curiosities, Dilly Fay the Shanghai Clown and Miss Paintero, a ‘Creole Lady’ who made a grand ascension on a 400 foot tightrope to the very top of the circus tent. Also advertised for “Yankee’s” visit was a grand parade around the Woodstock square. Circus parades were a crowd favorite and staple for all other circuses that visited Woodstock, weather permitting. Feeling his name sounded too foreign, especially during the anti-immigrant sentiments of the mid-1850s, Fayette Lodawick Robinson adopted the professional name “Yankee”.

    2019 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS SESSION A: August 5-11 PERIOD 1: 10:00 - 10:55 AM Acting the Song - Denise Blase, 13+ In this class, songs will be approached from the position of an actor with the logic, intention, and emotion behind the music being analyzed and truthfully expressed. Bring a song you are working on or Denise will help you choose one. All styles welcome. Either accompany yourself or Denise will on the piano. Students will learn how to break down a song and connect to the piece through both the lyrics and the music. This is the perfect class for singers/actors who want to dig deep into bringing more expression and dynamic interpretation to their singing. Opportunity to work on solos, duets and/or small group numbers. Caz Horns - Jessica Jones, 12+ Come join the house horn section, available to perform with many different bands in camp, including the jazz, rock and gospel ensembles! We'll learn the music for each ensemble and will also rehearse with the rock band (and other ensembles as possible). Then we'll perform! Some experience on your instrument and basic reading ability necessary. Some riffing, some improv, some reading - we're the ones who make the music punch! Instruments: all woodwinds and brass welcome, strings considered. Caz Masks - Emiliana Simon-Thomas, 7+ Make your own magnificent Caz Mask. Like a time capsule, your plaster gauze Caz Mask will be an aesthetic testament to who you are and what’s on your mind these days - and as a bonus - it can be your head start for Halloween.

Before coming to the performance, we encourage you to: • Copy the student resource sheet on pages 2-3 and hand it out to your students several days before the show. • Discuss the informa on on pages 4-7 about the performance and the ar sts with your students. • Read to your students from About the Art Form on page 8-10 and About Australia on page 12-14. • Assign two or more of the ac vi es on pages 15-17 to your students. • Refl ect with your students by asking them guiding ques ons, which you can fi nd on pages 4,6,8, and 12. • Immerse students further into the art form by using the resource and glossary sec ons on pages 17-18.     Accessible Arts Calendar Summary 2019 Current Venues and Shows Updated 9-4-19 – The VSA Minnesota Accessible Arts Calendar lists arts events that proactively offer accessibility accommodations such as: ASL (American Sign Language Interpreting), AD (Audio Description), CC (Closed Captioning), OC (Open or Scripted Captioning), DIS (performers with disabilities), or SENS (Sensory-friendly accommodations) which are inclusive for children on the autism spectrum. The main Accessible Arts Calendar listings (emailed monthly through August 2019 and online at http://vsamn.org/community/calendar) offer descriptions of shows, authors, directors, describer & interpreter names, ticket prices, discounts, dates for Pay What You Can (PWYC), and more. This Current Venues and Shows list supplements the Accessible Arts Calendar. On our website as a Resource under Community (http://vsamn.org/community/resources-community/), it summarizes shows at arts venues across Minnesota: plays, concerts, exhibits, films, storytelling, etc. It’s limited to what we learn about and have time to include. The venues are organized alphabetically by Twin Cities venues and then by Greater Minnesota venues. They may offer accessible performances proactively or upon request. Words in GREEN identify some accessibility accommodations. We assume all auditoriums and bathrooms are wheelchair-accessible and theatres with fixed seating have assistive listening devices, unless noted otherwise. Both calendars will be discontinued after September 2019 when VSA Minnesota ceases operation.
