2019 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS SESSION A: August 5-11

PERIOD 1: 10:00 - 10:55 AM

Acting the Song - Denise Blase, 13+ In this class, songs will be approached from the position of an actor with the logic, intention, and emotion behind the music being analyzed and truthfully expressed. Bring a song you are working on or Denise will help you choose one. All styles welcome. Either accompany yourself or Denise will on the piano. Students will learn how to break down a song and connect to the piece through both the lyrics and the music. This is the perfect class for singers/actors who want to dig deep into bringing more expression and dynamic interpretation to their singing. Opportunity to work on solos, duets and/or small group numbers.

Caz Horns - Jessica Jones, 12+ Come join the house horn section, available to perform with many different bands in camp, including the jazz, rock and gospel ensembles! We'll learn the music for each ensemble and will also rehearse with the rock band (and other ensembles as possible). Then we'll perform! Some experience on your instrument and basic reading ability necessary. Some riffing, some improv, some reading - we're the ones who make the music punch! Instruments: all woodwinds and brass welcome, strings considered.

Caz Masks - Emiliana Simon-Thomas, 7+ Make your own magnificent Caz Mask. Like a time capsule, your plaster gauze Caz Mask will be an aesthetic testament to who you are and what’s on your mind these days - and as a bonus - it can be your head start for Halloween. Drawing inspiration from what matters most to you and examples from around the world, we’ll roll up our sleeves, use a variety of decorative approaches, and make something meaningful. (The plaster gauze part involves sitting still with stuff on your face one time for 10 to 15 minutes)

Circus Arts - Jill Fjeldheim / Ben Glazer, 6+ This is a class for all levels, though especially good for beginners. Students will learn to ground deeply, improve core confidence, spatial awareness and practice integration of body/mind through very fun activities such as , plate-spinning, stilts, rolling globe, ribbons and more. Students collaborate and develop acts for the Saturday night Circus Extravaganza!!

Classical Caz Ensemble - Richard Vaughan / Lisa Chattler, 12+ Bring your band or orchestra instrument and join with other classical musicians for small group music making in an intimate setting. We will choose from duets, trios, quartets, and quintets. Musicians need to be able to read music at an intermediate level or beyond. Let’s bring Mozart to Caz!

Creative Writing Performance Workshop, Joshua Silverstein, 13+ Whether you're beginning or advanced in your writing journey, this class is designed to usher you into a writing process that will help you relinquish trepidation, diminish writers block, and alleviate the doubt from your inner critic. As a collective, we will write and share pieces, daily, that are revelatory in the individual spirit and human condition. Please bring a journal/notebook and a writing utensil.

Drum Set, Beginning - Keith Terry, 12+ Learn basic grooves in rock, jazz, Latin and R&B, while exploring the world of four-way independence with 2 hands and 2 feet. A fun way to learn more about feel, time, and pocket. No experience necessary. Instruments will be provided. Bring your own sticks.

Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 1 Fabric Arts: Weaving -Walmaria Caldas, 6+ Join us under the redwoods to weave a decorative wall piece. We will explore different patterns and each participant will compose a unique piece to take home. We will also have an opportunity to work together in a communal art piece. No weaving experience required. This will be an all-ages, multigenerational experience!

Guitar: 5 Styles in 5 Days - Steve Gibson, 13+ Join Steve for a whirlwind tour through 5 different approaches to playing guitar. Each day we'll take a look at a different approach to guitar playing. There will be handouts and some instruction, but the class will focus on making music. The styles to be covered will be, Soukous guitar, R&B guitar, Malian guitar, Blues fingerpicking, and Improvisation.

Jazz Dance, Beginning - Justine Villanueva, 6+ This class is designed for beginning dancers who are looking for energized fun, with both classic and current music of today. Class introduces students to syncopated rhythms, isolated body movements, and classic jazz moves. Focus is on improving rhythm, coordination, musicality, and strength. Learn some basic jazz dance vocabulary—jazz squares, lindy, grapevine, Charleston, chasse, etc.—and move to contemporary jazz-y pop songs with fun choreography.

Kid City – Creative Play with Christie the , 2.5 – 5 Christie brings her bag of tricks to engage and entertain our youngest campers. Clowning, puppetry, scarf dancing, storytelling, magic and more!!! Please refer to the website for additional details about Kid City.

Motown/Soul Band - Jeremy Steinkoler / Bryan Dyer, 12+ The mighty Motown Band returns! This band is geared toward more advanced players looking for a more intensive ensemble experience. We’ll cover several classic songs from the Motown and Soul repertoire, focusing on groove, arrangement, presentation, and very tight ensemble playing. Horn players (trumpet, sax, trombone) strongly encouraged! Bring your instruments and amps. (Limit 3 guitars, 2 keys, 2 bass, 2 drums, 6 vocalists)

Music ExplORFF - Zack Pitt-Smith, 6+ Explore music making through body percussion, singing in rounds, using easy to access pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments and unlock your full potential to making music in an ensemble environment. An easy and encouraging environment to finding how rhythm harmony and melody fit together in all sorts of musical styles from around the world.

Pandeiro - The Tambourine of Brazil! - Brian Rice, 10+ Pandeiro - known as the national instrument of Brazil, a drum set in a box, a frame drum on caffeine, this treasure of a percussion instrument is something we will learn how to groove whether it's the samba, bossa nova or northeastern baião. We will also look at a few other important instruments. Pandeiros will be provided or bring your own.

DSLR Photography for Beginners - Auey Santos, 12+ or 10+ with Parent/ Guardian If you’ve paid a pretty penny for your fancy DSLR camera and have yet to use it -- this course is for you! Everything you'll need to know about creating stunning images will be tackled: understanding light, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus and creative exposure. The first few days will focus on camera handling and understanding your light meter and various exposure settings. Each class will be project based and the session will end with a photo exhibit. Requirements: Digital SLR Camera (with full manual settings), with interchangeable lenses, memory card reader and USB thumb drive. Desirable but not required, a tripod and a laptop with editing software.

Play with Clay - Chris Fortin, 6 - 12 Join this class and get inspired by air-dry clay projects! Air-dry clay is a classic material that does not disappoint. It will be a fun and relaxing opportunity to learn basic hand building techniques for pots and sculptures, press-molds, surface and texturing. You can use these techniques to let your imagination run wild!

Songwriting: Three Chords and the Truth - Marie Schumacher, 10+ Come enjoy the deep satisfaction that comes from writing your own songs! In this class, we’ll do several warm-up activities to get the musical and lyric ideas flowing. Then you will have time in class to develop these ideas (or other ideas you have) into songs. On the last day of class, you’ll have the option of sharing your songs-in-progress with the group. If you have an instrument that will help with the writing process, please bring it; if not, there will be a guitar and keyboard available to use.

Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 2 Steel Drums - Mark Rosenthal, 7+ We will be jamming from day one. It usually takes very little time to get our collective groove on. For one thing the instruments provided have all the notes written on the drums!! (shhh...don't tell anyone). Steel pans are not only a unique addition to the world's catalogue of instruments; they are also fun to play. If you enjoy the sound and have never played you need to check it out. One Trinidadian saying is: "Not I, "We!" and it is very much a community feeling playing in the steel band. In the class we explore different styles of music. Students will be given parts to play according to their level. Classes often prepare one or two pieces for a Sunday performance.

Stone Carving - Eric Oldmixon and Sarah Myers, 10+ or 7+ with Parent Learn and practice the techniques of carving in the soft and versatile medium of soapstone. Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced students are all welcome. You will learn the whole process from developing a clear vision to “roughing out the form” with abrasive tools to refining with files and ultimately finishing through fine sanding and polishing. Demonstrations and sharing of ideas will accompany periods of focused (even meditative) time engaging with your stone. Soapstone carving is a great opportunity for parents and children to learn a new process together.

Ukulele, Beginning - Kyle Blase, 8+ We will concentrate on traditional chord progressions, vamps, turnarounds and a little bit of the history and legend behind the ukulele. Several tunes will be introduced with the intent of mastering at least one during the week. We will emphasize maximizing playing time, keeping talking and lecturing to a minimum. Transpositions will be available to more advanced players that decide to further challenge themselves. The ultimate goal of the course is to give each player the skills they need to motivate them in their own ukulele practice.

West African Dance - Naby Bangoura and accompanied by Wade Peterson, 8+ This high energy class is an introduction to the history and vocabulary of West African dance, emphasizing the central role that dance plays in African cultures. Beginners are welcome and the class if fun for all levels. Naby Bangoura learned traditional West African dance during village ceremonies and celebrations in Guinée, West Africa. At age fifteen, Naby started dancing professionally with Les Merveilles de Guinée. In 1998, Les Merveilles brought him to perform in the United States. Known for his energetic and fluid dance style and soaring spirit, Naby has been performing and teaching high energy West African dance, Guinée style, in dance studios and dance workshops all over the world.

Yoga Flow - Melanie Green, 9+ This class is suitable for yoga students of all levels. We will practice sun salutations to warm up the body, followed by standing and seated postures. Various yoga postures will be taught to increase , strength, and flexibility. You will learn and deepen your experience of yogic breathing, while moving through the postures. There is ongoing encouragement to find an inner steadiness in the face of discomfort. Students will be challenged and have fun. Bring your own mat.

African Percussion - Mamadou Sidibe, 10+ Explore the rhythms of West Africa using handmade African percussion instruments - djembe, chekere, calabasse, African shakers. We'll find a groove together and learn simple songs. All levels welcome.

Beat Making - Clay Terry and Devin Fike, 13+ In this class, we will be using GarageBand to learn how to make beats. We will be exploring the program, and cool techniques and tricks to get you started using GarageBand to your liking. Equipment Requirements: Computer with Garage Band downloaded (free) or Ipad with GarageBand downloaded, Headphones.

Clowning Around - Christie Lewis and Jill Fjeldheim, 6+ Did you ever feel that there was a ridiculous character inside of you just dying to get out? Then this is the place for you! Through improvisation and creative play, we will create silly characters and wacky stories to perform at the Cazadero Clown and Circus Extravaganza. This is your big chance to run away and join the circus!!!

Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 3 Create Compelling Photos - Auey Santos, 10+ We all love to communicate through images, and we don’t need a fancy camera to do creative beautiful images. Using any camera, this course aims to help artists of all levels to find their visual voice. We will be tackling techniques for better nature photography, portraits and storytelling. Some fun activities include scavenger hunts, games and art projects. The photography course ends with a group photography project. Equipment requirements: Any camera device, iPhone, iPad, Fuji Instax, Polaroid or Point and Shoot Camera.

Dancing with Others: Basics of Partner Dance - Evie Ladin, 8+ Swing dance, square dance, two step, waltz, more - basic skills for dancing with a partner is not something people generally learn anymore, and yet gives so much juice to any style in which you'd want to dance with others. Basic weight sharing, leading, following, turns, footwork - it's easier than you think! No experience needed.

Family Creek Walks - Craig Nelson, 6+ Come explore the creek bed together. We'll wander and look for crayfish, frogs, and insects as we learn about the local ecology of Austin Creek. Meet by the pool and we will walk down to a different spot in the creek each day. It’s a great start to the morning for all ages and run as a drop-in activity if you want to explore on your own some days.

First Friday Producers with Keith Terry, 18+ Be the producers. The class will plan, organize and implement the First Friday Dance Parties. Get your Empresario on - learn more about what goes into programming, overview, and logistics when producing an event.

Gospel Choir - Bryan Dyer, 12+ Have you always wanted to sing gospel music? Well here’s your chance! You are invited to be part of Family Camp’s rockin’ and soulful gospel choir! You will learn and perform spirituals, along with contemporary and traditional gospel music. Students will learn vocal and performance techniques, rhythms, and harmony. Singers from beginners to advanced, of all ages, are encouraged to join in the fun of learning and singing this exciting music. All you need is willingness, a sense of humor, commitment, a passion for making a “joyful noise!”

Hip Hop Ensemble - Justin James, Jacob Rubin, Mike Ruby, 10+ In this collaborative ensemble, lyricists of all skill levels explore the art of spoken word and perform original verses for a final performance...with a live band! Those in the band should be more advanced players, capable of improvising and holding a steady groove. Concepts like remixing and sampling will be applied in our arrangements of hip-hop covers/originals. (limit 3 guitars, 1 keys, 2 bass, 3 singers, 8 rappers)

Kid City Swimming - Isabel, 2.5 - 5 Join Kid City at the pool for young camper and parent swim time. Please refer to the website for additional details about Kid City.

Kids Rock Band- Kyle Blase & Zack Pitt-Smith, 6-11 Kids Rock Band at Caz is a combination kids chorus and rock band. Finally, the kids get to play the music they want, with a class dedicated to their needs and pace. Open to all kids, regardless of instrument and experience. We will pick two pop/rock songs to work on for the week, and work out fun multi-part vocal arrangements, along with dedicated rhythm section parts. If you already play an instrument, be sure to indicate it on the class sign-up form. (limit 2 drums, 2 keys, 2 bass)

Meditation and Restorative Yoga - Melanie Green, 14+ This class is designed for anyone wanting to meditate at Caz. It provides a place to support people who already have a meditation practice as well as beginners wanting to learn simple meditation techniques. Each day, students will receive support and guidance to quiet the mind, followed by simple restorative yoga poses for full relaxation.

New Orleans Groove Ensemble - Jennifer Jolly, 13+ New Orleans has given us some of the deepest grooves on the planet -- early jazz and R&B, funk, second line, Mardi Gras Indian rhythms, brass bands, and even bounce. Come join the Groove Ensemble and get down with some New Orleans tunes, and maybe even some Cajun/zydeco. Open to all instruments and singers. Laissez les bon temps rouler! Cazadero String Band - Steve Gibson, 13+ Open to all acoustic stringed instruments, but curious winds and others are welcome as well. We will be playing some Irish fiddle tunes, along with American string music, and who knows what else?! Learn some great melodies or accompany, improvise, and have fun as part of the Cazadero String Band.

Recyclophonic Orchestra - Phil Worman, 6+ The materials may be recycled, but the musical sounds will be super-fresh. Come join us at any level, and we will help you find your inner-musical- instrument-inventor-maker as we explore a world that encourages blowing on a milk jug, banging on a tin mug, twanging on a flip-tub, or otherwise making the air sing. We will provide an array of dump-diverted materials, and tools needed to cut, drill, screw, glue, bind, and shape them into the sounds they always wanted to be. As the instruments emerge, so will the music, and as the music emerges, so will a collaborative soundscape that promises to be funky, experimental, sweet, and new to the world.

Rock Band - Jeremy Steinkoler, 12+ Rock out at Caz this summer! Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists with basic proficiency on their instruments. We’ll have fun playing through 2 or 3 songs, focusing on arrangements, dynamics, soloing, and establishing a strong groove; we’ll play one tune at open mic on Friday and choose the best one for the final performance. Guitarists should know major and minor chords. Bass players should be able to find root notes at the bottom of the neck. Drummers should be able to play a simple steady groove, and keyboardists/pianists should know major and minor chords. Bring your instruments and amps. All instruments welcome. (Limit 3 drummers and 6 vocalists)

Sew What?! - Amy Brown, 13+ Let's meditate with stitches. For those who already know the basics of sewing, come to this free-form fiber salon and select projects in embroidery, plush design, quilt-piecing and more. This is the Cazadero Stitch-n-Kvetch. Feel free to bring a project you seek input on. For campers with experience in the needle arts.

Taiko - Susan Horn, 8 - 12 This year we are honoring Grandmaster Daihachi Oguchi by learning the song he discovered in a temple in Nagano, Japan. It is also the first song Susan taught at Caz 21 years ago. Hiryu San Dan Gaeshi and Tonbane. Modern Taiko is a fun and energetic form of the ancient tradition of Japanese drumming. Similar to the training of martial arts: respect, discipline, and focus are an essential part of the teaching of Taiko. Susan expects each student to memorize and practice daily what is taught. Playing Taiko is a group effort, the fun comes as a reward for working, practicing, and performing together. CAZ Taiko's motto is: RENSHU KIBISHIKU--ENSO TANOSHIKU, hard practice = fun performance! If you have hesitated in the past or felt intimidated, this is the year for you to try Taiko. Memorization of parts will be minimized, fun maximized, but will still be taught in the tradition of Taiko style discipline (http://www.etaiko.org). Instruments are provided.

Tap, Beginning - Denise Blase, 10+ Let’s get tappin’! You've always wanted to try it. Now's your chance. In this class you'll learn a variety of tap steps such as shuffles, flaps, paddle turn, riff walks, and cramp rolls, that will lead you into basic combinations and possibly a beginning routine to perform on the final day of camp. Tap shoes are encouraged but optional. Jazz shoes, character shoes, oxfords or dress shoes with a smooth flat sole will work just fine. (Rubber and/or ridged soles will stick. No flip flops or barefoot.)

Violin, Beginning: A Tune a Day - Richard Vaughan, 8+ Discover the joy of playing violin! We start off with the basics (bow hold, fingering, note reading and scales for soloing) and then move into simple fiddle tunes. You will learn a song each day! Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 5 Writing Fiction with Joy and Ease - Hillary Homzie 10+ Fun, creative, enlightening writing sessions that will feel like play. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or an enthusiastic beginner, you will love these fiction writing prompts that will have you writing with gusto. We’ll also go over seven proven techniques to help you finish your short story or novel after camp is over. Prepare to share in this ultra- supportive workshop. Pencils, pens, and paper will be provided. You supply your unique voice.

You’re Hilarious: Comedy Writing- Hannah Feldman, 13+ You're hilarious... you just don't know it yet. In this class we'll learn how to find the comedy in our world and turn it into actual real live honest-to-goodness-I'm-super-serious-these-are-for-real jokes. Through improv, sketch, and standup techniques we'll learn how to bring comedy and creativity into our daily lives. This class welcomes writers and performers of all levels of experience.

Bluegrass Ensemble - Dennis Fortin and Steve Gibson, 13+ Join us and get down with this traditional American music! We will be exploring bluegrass styles to teach you the fundamentals from kick-off to ending. Instrumentalists (fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass) should have at least a basic understanding of their instruments; vocalists welcome.

Chamber Choir - Bryan Dyer, 16+ This is a small ensemble designed for singers with some prior choral experience. Ability to sight read is preferred but not required. We'll learn some traditional choral tunes, and perhaps some music from the Renaissance period. Beautiful music brought to life with beautiful voices! If you enjoy some advanced singing and great harmony, this is the class for you. Under 16 voices will be considered based on experience.

Clawhammer Banjo for the Rank Beginner - Evie Ladin, 12+ Old-time clawhammer banjo is a unique sound in American traditional music. Once you get the basic technique, it’s pretty easy to make music, and play along with all kinds of songs. We will start from scratch with basic technique and learn some songs and tunes from the standard repertoire. We will also discuss some basic music theory that is useful for any instrument, in any genre. Requests welcome! Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 6 DJ 101 - Justin James, 9+ Come try your hand at an art at the root of Hip Hop and American music for the past 50+ years. Bring your deep knowledge of genres or begin a new chapter in your musical career. Build your skills in making a playlist, scratching, and establishing a smooth set that all crowds will enjoy. The art of DJing has shifted from analog to digital making the artform accessible to anyone and everyone who wants to learn it. We will cover the basics from cueing and fading, beatmatching and blending, using basic effects and some basic scratching techniques. No experience necessary.

Drawing for Teens - Eric Oldmixon and Sarah Myers, 13-22 Responding to popular demand, an art class for all the teens. We will introduce a variety of drawing techniques and materials and work to help you reveal your creative voice. Experiment, refine and collaborate. All skill levels welcome.

Environmental Art: Aquatopia - Phil Worman, 6+ This year we will cast our net wide to incorporate things that move—water wheels, windmills, leaf-boats, etc.—with roads, bridges, elfin houses, and the like, as together we create a miniature city—Aquatopia—in the heart of the creek-bed. Budding artists, artisans, architects and adventurers of all shapes and sizes: Welcome to Aquatopia.

Felting, Beginning - Amy Brown, 10+ Create a small wool sculpture or toy using a very basic but satisfying technique-- needle felting! Learn to make a solid shape from wool and cover it in color. Use a special felting needle to poke, poke, poke fibers into place and sculpt anything real or imagined.

Hambone and Beyond - Keith Terry, 10+ Play your body clap, slap, snap, step and vocalize. It's body music music you can see, dance you can hear. Old as dirt and still fresh. Comfortable clothes and sneakers recommended. No experience necessary.

Harmonica - Les Ogilby, 10+ Don’t you think it is time you learned how to play the most popular instrument in the world? Here’s your big chance! Join Les Ogilby in a fun class designed to teach beginners to play tunes on their own by the end of the first lesson! By the end of the week, you’ll even experience jamming with a blues guitar! All you need to bring is a harmonica in the key of C. Buy one made by Hohner, Lee Oskar, or Suzuki. If you don’t bring one, Les will have some fine, inexpensive Suzuki Folkmaster harmonicas available for you to purchase.

Hip Hop Dance aka Kicking It with the Women of Hip Hop - Justine Villanueva, 10 - 15 Learn some hip-hop moves to the music of female hip-hop artists like Missy Elliott, Beyoncé, and Cardi B.

Jazz Band - Michelle Jacques and Jessica Jones, 13+ (Younger campers accepted with instructor approval) Open to all instruments. We’ll begin our journey playing by ear as well as doing some simple reading, through a few different jazz feels. By the end of the week, we’ll take solos, learn how to play behind solos, and we’ll start to create our own fantastic arrangements. There will be a little music theory, and a whole lot of playing. Requirements: Drummers; ability to keep a steady beat on a swing pattern; All others: ability to play 2 major scales on your instrument. Emphasis will be improvisation (a safe place to try it if you haven’t before – don’t worry!), ensemble sound and swing, and enjoying ourselves in the redwoods with our instruments. (limit 2 guitars, 2 basses, 2 drums, 2 keyboards)

Kid City - African Percussion with Mamadou Sidibe, 2.5 - 5 Explore the rhythms of West Africa using handmade African percussion instruments - chekere, calabasse, African shakers. Students will be invited to listen and play along with Mamadou.

Masks, Movement & Improv - Michele Haner, 10+ Group play, physical improvisation and expansive expression are explored in this workshop in movement, physical improvisation and mask work. Each session begins with physical warm-ups, theater games and improvisation. We then expand our expressive tools by exploring elements, animals, colors and passions through movement and improvisation. Participants then explore a variety of masks including neutral masks, larval masks, commedia dell’arte masks and even that smallest of masks: the clown nose. Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 7 Musical Ensemble - MARY POPPINS Kimberly Dooley, 6+ This year's musical is the beloved Mary Poppins. Sing and dance to some of your favorite tunes this summer, like Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

We need ALL AGES for this class, so adults please join us too!!! Kids 8 and under MUST have a grown-up signed up and performing alongside them. Must be available Friday night 6:30-8:30 for an extra rehearsal, and Saturday during free time and quiet time for a dress rehearsal. The show is Saturday night.

Musical Stage Crew - MARY POPPINS Kimberly Dooley, 10+ Join our fabulous tech crew to participate in creating props and bringing the magical production of Mary Poppins to life.

Musical Pit Band - Denise Blase and Richard Vaughan We will be the musical accompaniment for the Saturday night production of Mary Poppins. Working in conjunction with Kimberly Dooley's theater class, we will be an essential piece in creating an exciting theatrical experience. Advanced musicians only, please. Paper Craft - Chris Fortin, 6+ Learn the fundamentals of paper engineering and the many fantastic forms it can take. From simple techniques of folding, gluing and cutting to the complex folds of origami, paper pop-ups, and paper mask construction. This is a fantastic class for all levels of experience and anyone who enjoys paper construction.

Rock & Pop Piano: Beginning - Jennifer Jolly, 10+ Piano and keyboards are everywhere in rock, pop, and hip-hop. From Queen and Elton John to Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa, an entire song can be carried by you: the piano player! Even “Old Town Road” uses the piano to hold the song together. In this class you’ll learn the basics of piano the most fun way: by playing songs we all know. No experience necessary; all are welcome! Bringing your own headphones (not earbuds) with 1/4” adapter is recommended; a few sets will be available to borrow at camp.

Samba Pagode - Brian Rice, 9+ There are many styles of samba from Brazil, but one of the most infectious is samba pagode (pah-go-jee). This style, unlike the drum heavy carnaval samba is more suitable for a backyard barbeque than a street parade. It’s all about the singing really, but there are many drum parts to fill it out. Nylon string guitar and cavaquinho are the two string instruments that are needed to make this class happen. If you have those skills, I will have my cavaquinho for you to use (a ukulele can work as an alternative). One cavaquinho and all percussion instruments will be provided.

Swing Guitar - Debbie Cox, 11+ This class will help the intermediate guitarist form those beautiful chords that create the sweet sounds of 30's and 40's swing music. With just a few 4-note chords and some practice, you can be playing the music that birthed the improvisations of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. We'll be playing a few classic songs from the American Songbook by the end of the week. Come have some fun with us!

Taiko - Susan Horn, 12+ This year we are honoring Grandmaster Daihachi Oguchi by learning the song he discovered in a temple in Nagano, Japan. It is also the first song Susan taught at Caz 21 years ago. Hiryu San Dan Gaeshi and Tonbane. Modern Taiko is a fun and energetic form of the ancient tradition of Japanese drumming. Similar to the training of martial arts: respect, discipline, and focus are an essential part of the teaching of Taiko. Susan expects each student to memorize and practice daily what is taught. Playing Taiko is a group effort, the fun comes as a reward for working, practicing, and performing together. CAZ Taiko's motto is: RENSHU KIBISHIKU--ENSO TANOSHIKU, hard practice = fun performance! If you have hesitated in the past or felt intimidated, this is the year for you to try Taiko. Memorization of parts will be minimized, fun maximized, but will still be taught in the tradition of Taiko style discipline (http://www.etaiko.org). Instruments are provided.

Trivia Classic - Jacob Rubin, 10+ Love bar trivia? Want to do it yourself? This handy skill is great for parties, team-building, or other events, and now you can learn how to make your own games! Learn the skills behind forming the questions, creating a diverse round and game, and hosting the events, all culminating in a game the whole camp can play with questions provided by the students.

West African Dance - Naby Bangoura and accompanied by Wade Peterson, 8+ This high energy class is an introduction to the history and vocabulary of West African dance, emphasizing the central role that dance plays in African cultures. Beginners are welcome and the class if fun for all levels. Naby Bangoura learned traditional West African dance during village ceremonies and celebrations in Guinée, West Africa. At age fifteen, Naby started dancing professionally with Les Merveilles de Guinée. In 1998, Les Merveilles brought him to perform in the United States. Known for his energetic and fluid dance style and soaring spirit, Naby has been performing and teaching high energy West African dance, Guinée style, in dance studios and dance workshops all over the world.

A Cappella Singing - Marie Schumacher, 9+ In this class, we’ll be learning two pop/rock songs arranged for voices only, sung in 3-4 parts. If you love to sing harmony and are intrigued by the idea of being in a rock band of all voices, this will be a great time for you! It’s helpful but not necessary that you have a little experience singing in harmony with others. We’ll use sheet music to learn the songs, but the tunes will be catchy, so if you’re more of a learn-by-ear person, you should have no trouble getting into the groove! We may even throw in some simple beat-boxing and choreography to liven up the act.

African Band - Mamadou Sidibe, 14+ Join Mamadou for West Africa band! We will be using African percussion instruments -kamelengoni (hunters harp) djembe, chekere, calabasse, and African shakers. Students are welcome to bring their own instrument as well as play African instruments. We'll find a groove together, learn simple songs, and play traditional West African rhythms. All levels welcome.

Ashtanga Yoga - Melanie Green, 14+ Ashtanga Yoga is a vigorous flow style of yoga, linking breath with movement. It is a yoga system designed to strengthen, align and purify the entire body and mind. Previous yoga experience is required; all levels of Ashtanga practitioners are welcome to attend. Students will explore all of the standing and finishing poses in the Ashtanga Primary Series. This class will encourage greater focus, endurance and flexibility.

Bodhran: Irish Drum - Jeremy Steinkoler, 14+ Ever wondered about the circular drum you’ve seen played in Irish traditional music? Curious how percussionists can generate so much rhythm and tonality out of a simple frame drum with a stick? This class will offer a crash course in playing the bodhran (pronounced “bow-ron”), the simple but powerful drum at the heart of the traditional Irish music session. We’ll learn to play in the Kerry style, but also go over the more modern “top down” approach to playing jigs, reels and other tunes. We’ll play along with recordings, but we’ll also cover session etiquette, so you can join in at the pub session and play with the band! Bring your own drum, as there will only be one extra on hand. Classic Country Songs Ensemble - Evie Ladin, 13+ Classic Country Songs! George, Patsy, Loretta, Merle, Hank - we'll work up harmonies and simple arrangements, and sing and play through classic country songs, paying attention to some nuances and what makes them so achy- breaky awesome. Bring your instruments and we'll pass around solos, or practice playing and singing, backing up singers, etc. If you love that old honky tonk sound, or have no experience in this genre, this class will get you hooked! Prerequisite: Able to play basic chords on an instrument played in a Honky Tonk Band and/or want to sing melody or harmony! - guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, accordion, fiddle, lap steel, etc. This class will prep us for the First Friday Honky Tonk Session.

Commit to the Bit: Performing Funnies Funniely - Hannah Feldman, 10+ Are you a storyteller, comedian, singer, actor, or just a regular person talking to other regular people who wants to make funny things funnier? In this class we’ll explore how to use our voices, movement, expression, and other techniques to achieve peak funniness. This class welcomes performers of all experience levels, just be ready to COMMIT. TO. THE. BIT.

Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 9 DJ 101 - Justin James, 9+ Come try your hand at an art at the root of Hip Hop and American music for the past 50+ years. Bring your deep knowledge of genres or begin a new chapter in your musical career. Build your skills in making a playlist, scratching, and establishing a smooth set that all crowds will enjoy. The art of DJing has shifted from analog to Digital making the artform accessible to anyone and everyone who wants to learn it. We will cover the basics from cueing and fading, beatmatching and blending, using basic effects and some basic scratching techniques. No experience necessary.

Electric Bass - Mike Ruby, 12+ This workshop will address the foundational role of electric bass in modern music. We will explore a range of techniques and styles, while learning bass lines essential for a bassist's repertoire. There is no final performance for this class and all levels are welcome.

Hip Hop Hamilton, Justine Villanueva, 6+ Learn hip-hop influenced dance moves to songs from Hamilton, including “Room Where It Happens”, “Right Hand Man”, “Non-Stop”, “My Shot”, etc.

Jazz Lab - Zack Pitt-Smith, 8+ An introductory experience to "play" with the elements of jazz: We will explore the swing groove and get to know good tools to use in improvisation all through fun. Best part of all, no prior musical experience necessary! We will use "accessible" instruments - xylophones and non-pitched percussion, but feel free to bring anything to the laboratory! Fun for the whole family!

Kid City Rhythm & Dance - Wade Peterson, 2.5-5 For more than a decade, Wade Peterson brings his playful rhythms to Kid City. Kids love the shaker warm up, clave activity, Djembe drumming, animal freeze dance, dancing & movement games, songs, & goodbye high-fives. His unique approach benefits the children by engaging them socially, cognitively and creatively, & most importantly, they have loads of fun!

Lindy Hop, Beginning - Auey Santos & Katie Dillon, 12+ Keep calm & Swing Out! In this class, you will learn the basics of Lindy Hop, the original swing dance from the 1930s that features fancy footwork and syncopated rhythms. Learn basic 6-count variations, 8-count swing outs and Charleston footwork to the old jazz greats: Count Basie, Louie Armstrong and Duke Ellington. No partners are needed, we will rotate in the classroom, but you should decide beforehand if you will take the role of a lead or a follow.

Make and Play Chekere - Brian Rice, 13+ The Chekere is a gourd instrument with a net of beads around it. Originally from Africa the instrument is also found in Cuba and Brazil and other places, and takes on the many different shapes gourds come in. By shaking the gourd and making the bead net move we can play many grooves. They can also be very beautiful to look at. In this class we'll make our own and learn to play them, too. You must be able and willing to tie many small knots to make one.

Musical Leads - MARY POPPINS Kimberly Dooley, 10+ This year's musical is the Disney favorite, Mary Poppins. Bring your favorite characters to life, like Mary Poppins, the adorable Bert, Jane, Michael, the Banks and many more unforgettable roles.

In the Leads class, you'll tackle a role with solo lines and singing parts, as well as backup singing in many numbers. You must be available for Friday night rehearsal 6:30-8:30, and Saturday dress rehearsals during quiet time and free time. You also must be available to meet with Denise, our music director, during free time one day.

After you sign up, you will receive an email with a questionnaire soon (return it ASAP) and then a script, role and costume details soon after that. (the goal is by 1 to 2 weeks before camp, so you can learn your lines)

Playification - Ben Simon-Thomas, 6+ Harness your imagination! Increase your fun IQ! Connect to your inner sense of play! Join us at PLAYIFICATION where we use the power of play to learn together, grow together and have fun together! With a mixture of team games, scavenger hunts, capture the flag, hide and seek, and other games; your child, and you if you’re game, will have a great time. Join us to improve your social skills, learn how to work in a team, and improve problem solving abilities through play.

Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 10 PlayCreation - Site Specific - Steve Morgan Haskell, 14+ Want to get down and dirty and scream at your ancestors? Ever had a heated conversation with a tree? What if bluebirds told us what to do? Dare to explore a subterranean life and turn it into a performance for our camp, whilst we can-can around and about the redwoods of Cazadero land. This site-specific playwriting class will take you through phases that offer investigations into a physical performance form using movement, music, gesture and the nature that surrounds us. Be brave, shed light on an essence that is at once a group creation and your very own play.

Printmaking - Sarah Myers and Eric Oldmixon, 13+ Combine the skills of drawing and carving to create a unique image that can be printed repeatedly. We will explore the graphic and illustrative potential of relief printing looking at images from this rich history. You'll be guided through the process of developing imagery, planning values and color use, and using tools to carve your image. Hand printing techniques on a variety of materials will be demonstrated and you will be urged to experiment with the opportunities offered through the process including the opportunity to create an illuminated lantern for the Friday Night Art Walk. Repeating/Adv students will be able to employ reductive-carving color techniques and/or mixed media printing opportunities.

Steel Drums - Mark Rosenthal, 7+ We will be jamming from day one. It usually takes very little time to get our collective groove on. For one thing the instruments provided have all the notes written on the drums!! (shhh...don't tell anyone). Steel pans are not only a unique addition to the world's catalogue of instruments; they are also fun to play. If you enjoy the sound and have never played you need to check it out. One Trinidadian saying is: "Not I, "We!" and it is very much a community feeling playing in the steel band. In the class we explore different styles of music. Students will be given parts to play according to their level. Classes often prepare one or two pieces for a Sunday performance.

Swing Band - Dennis Fortin and Richard Vaughan, 13+ Got a song in your heart? Always wanted to sing and/or play the timeless music of Classic American Standards for an adoring audience of swing dancers? Then this is the class for YOU! Singers - come prepared with 1 or 2 songs and the lead sheets. Instrumentalists - be prepared to read great charts and swing! This class is specifically for the singers and instrumentalists who will be performing at the dance on Wednesday night. You will learn how to find your key, how to accompany in a key that is new to you, how to communicate with the band, or with the singers, and how to have a blast on a gig! After Wednesday we will have a few days to go over what we did at the dance, polishing songs that were performed as well as beginning new songs. Knowledge of your instrument is needed for this intermediate level class, and some chord knowledge is required. Singers: you are required to bring in a song that you know and want to sing, with a chart xeroxed of the song, which includes lyrics and chord changes. Prerequisite: 2 years-experience on your instrument is required.

Tiny Quilts - Amy Brown, 13+ Learn to make a miniature quilt block by hand while relaxing in the forest. Using the English Paper Piecing technique, quilting doesn’t have to be so intimidating. We will design a small quilt that can be hung as art or used as a place mat. This class is for those who already have beginner sewing skills, but no quilting experience is needed!

Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp | Page 11 Video Storytelling - Mark Altenberg, 13+ Video is a great way to capture the Caz vibe. But there’s so much going on… where do you start? The key is to tell simple, short stories. In this class we’ll look at different ways to tell a story with video. You'll get an assignment every day, then come back to class the next day and we'll watch and critique the results. An iPhone is all you need. Be sure there is space to record some video and don’t forget your battery charger. There will be a little tech talk, but mostly we’ll focus on shooting and storytelling techniques.

Your Own Big World: The Huldufólk - Phil Worman, 6+ Come join us as we search for the legendary “Huldufólk” or “Hidden People” of Cazadero. They are small and secretive, but they do often leave clues as to their whereabouts—you just have to know where to look. If (when?) we find their secret hideaway, we will choose from a cornucopia of natural materials to construct summer houses for them—known to bring them happiness—all interwoven with their history, which we will discover together. In the spirit of the Huldufólk, Eclectic Experimentation will be encouraged; Insane Ideas will be welcomed; and Freewheeling Fun will be had.
