[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Robert Henry Gough Smallwood (1864-1943), antiquary, local historian and an authority on shorthand, was born at Burslem, Staffordshire, but spent most of his life in the Wrexham area, having married Mary Pritchard of Gresford, Denbighshire, in 1893. His interests were numerous and wide-ranging, but (in his own words) concentrated on 'old deeds, numismatics, local history (chiefly the personal side) and shorthand'. Smallwood was a member of several genealogical, antiquarian and archaeological societies, and assisted Alfred Neobald Palmer (1847-1915) in his historical studies of Wrexham and its neighbourhood. He also published a number of articles on the history of freemasonry and shorthand, and collected a considerable amount of material during the course of his research. Smallwood, together with deeds and documents collected by him, 1317-1943, mainly relating to the Wrexham area and mainly 17th-19th cent., comprising deeds and other papers, 1317-1890, concerning various families and properties in Wales, England and Jamaica; Smallwood's notebooks, files, indexes, etc., on genealogy, especially of the Smallwood family, and local history, freemasonry, numismatics and archaeology; material relating to shorthand, including volumes written in shorthand, [17th cent.]-[18th cent.], catalogues, letters, and material relating to Welsh, American, German, Austrian, Italian, French and English shorthand systems; and various letters, bills, receipts and memoranda [late 18th cent.]-[early 19th cent.). (NLW Wynnstay estate records; Strata Marcella Charters; Montgomery Collections vol IV, 1871, p234) No date The lordship of Rûg Estate contains the townships of Gwernol, Bod Heulog, Ucheldref, Trewyn, Cynwyd Fawr, Cynwyd Fechan, Y Fairdref, Bryn Saeth Marchog Aelhaearn, Meiarth, Clegyr and Aber, Alwen, in the parish of Corwen. (Powys Fadog VI, 1887, 9 24) No date The manor of Ucheldref, in the parish of Gwyddelwern formerly belonged to Llewelyn The Great, Lord of Iâl at Llanarmon-yn-Ial. Ucheldref consists (present tense in 1887) of 16 farms and very extensive moors, affording good grouse shooting. Llewelyn ap Dolffin was lord of 7 manors: Aelhaearn, Llygadog in Gwyddelwern, Ucheldref, Garth Haiarn Llandderfel in the commote of Is Meloch in Penllyn, Caer Gelor, and Y Saeth Marchog, in the parish of Derwen in the Commote of Coleigion.(Powys Fadog VI p 5-6) No date Ucheldref was in the Barony of Glyndyfrdwy. (Arch Camb., April 1876) 1509 King Henry (VIII) Crowned 1530 Birth of Edmund Meyrick (I) at Bodorgan, Llangadwaladr, Anglesey (see death 1605) 1535 The six commissioners of King Henry (VIII) recorded the land holdings of Strata Marcella when it was forcibly closed down by King Henry. 1536 Dissolution of Strata Marcella abbey.
