Harvest of sunshine Alison Morris Lifestyles Editor unflowers are not a typical crop growing in Western Oklahoma but Mark and Vonda Graf of Corn are on their second year of growing and harvesting sunflowers. S Graf said they plant the sunflowers around the first of May depending on soil temperatures and they are ready to harvest towards the end of August or beginning of September. When they are ready to harvest the flowers will be black and dry. Graf uses an ‘all crop head’ on his combine to harvest the flowers. He said the head sandwiches the flowers in-between a set of belts before cutting the flowers. This allows him to capture almost every flower head. Graf then stores the sunflowers in bins until he can deliver them to Jettco Seed in Binger to be processed. The sunflowers Graf plants are not the confectionary ones that are harvested for their seeds. His flowers are about half the size and are used for bird seed or crushing for sunflower oil. Graf said this is a relatively low maintenance crop. As long as they get plenty of rain they do well. “They look lovely, they are a good cash crop in comparison to wheat right now,” said Graf. “Right now they are at the peak of their beauty and have drawn lots of spectators.” WFRC plans can sculpture competition Roxane Paone Mark Graf, of Corn, said his sunflower fields are at the peak time for beauty. Great News for the Lockhart Stadium Site! Earlier This Month, the City Commission Took a Major Step Toward Redeveloping This Important Property
Great news for the Lockhart Stadium site! Earlier this month, the City Commission took a major step toward redeveloping this important property. We unanimously voted to enter into an agreement with Miami Beckham United, a group led by soccer legend David Beckham, on a visionary project for the 64- acre site. The Beckham group is ready to invest up to $60 million to transform the property into a “soccer-centric community destination.” Preliminary plans call for the construction of a new state-of-the-art 18,000-seat soccer stadium where Beckham’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team, Inter Miami CF, would play its first two seasons. An interim agreement is currently being negotiated that will allow the Beckham Group to expeditiously move forward with site preparation and demolition so that the stadium can be completed by February 2020 in time for the start of next year’s MLS season. In addition to the stadium, the Lockhart site would serve as Inter Miami’s base of operations, main training center, home to a United Soccer League (USL) farm team, and headquarters for a youth soccer academy that would groom the next generation of elite soccer players. The complex would also include team and administrative offices, locker rooms, weight rooms, classrooms, dining facilities, medical and rehabilitation facilities, and practice fields. The Beckham group would bring millions of dollars in public enhancements to the property including the development of a public park, dog park, playground, public multi-purpose fields, and a walking/jogging/fitness trail. The Commission is also committed to building an additional stadium that our local public schools could use for football and other athletic activities. -

MLS as a Sports Product – the Prominence of the World’s Game in the U.S. April 8, 2021 Abstract The purpose of this Working Paper is to analyze how soccer at the professional level in the U.S., with Major League Soccer as a focal point, has developed over the span of a quarter of a century. It is worthwhile to examine the growth of MLS from its first game in 1996 to where the league currently stands as a business as it moves past its 25th anniversary. The 1994 World Cup (held in the U.S.) and the subsequent implementation of MLS as a U.S. professional league exerted a major positive influence on soccer participation and fandom in the U.S. Consequently, more importance was placed on soccer in the country’s culture. The research reported here explores the league’s evolution and development through the cohesion existing between its sporting and business development, as well as its performance. -

Strategic Plan 2020-2025
CONTENTS Executive Summary 2 Introduction 7 Greater Miami and the Beaches Market Overview 8 Project Overview 12 Community Engagement 14 Community Stakeholder Feedback 16 Industry Trends 18 Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) Trends 20 DestinationNEXT Assessment 22 Major Findings 28 Strategic Goals & Initiatives 30 Appendices 36 DestinationMiami.org | 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Greater Miami and the Beaches has evolved into one of the most diverse and dynamic destinations in the world in little more than a generation. The fusion of Latin, Caribbean, African and European influences has elevated Greater Miami on the world stage with a bravado uniquely its own, attracting a wide cross-section of visitors from around the globe. Signature destination marketing programs along with infrastructure and real estate investment have propelled Miami- Dade County as one of the fastest growing counties in the eastern U.S. in 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Today, Greater Miami has entered a new era where it must address numerous challenges brought about by its status and success as a global destination. Specifically, with regard to the visitor economy, there are many complex issues relating to mobility, workforce development, inclusivity, affordability and sustainability that will require the public and private sectors to collaborate more intentionally than ever before to address effectively. The Strategic Plan for Greater Miami and the Beaches is a 5-year roadmap to outline how the local tourism and hospitality industry can navigate a future ripe with new opportunities amid those challenges. To inform the development of the plan, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), in partnership with the InterVISTAS and MMGY NextFactor consultant teams, convened key industry stakeholders, elected officials and hundreds of residents across the county.
