  • Great News for the Lockhart Stadium Site! Earlier This Month, the City Commission Took a Major Step Toward Redeveloping This Important Property
Great news for the Lockhart Stadium site! Earlier this month, the City Commission took a major step toward redeveloping this important property. We unanimously voted to enter into an agreement with Miami Beckham United, a group led by soccer legend David Beckham, on a visionary project for the 64- acre site. The Beckham group is ready to invest up to $60 million to transform the property into a “soccer-centric community destination.” Preliminary plans call for the construction of a new state-of-the-art 18,000-seat soccer stadium where Beckham’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team, Inter Miami CF, would play its first two seasons. An interim agreement is currently being negotiated that will allow the Beckham Group to expeditiously move forward with site preparation and demolition so that the stadium can be completed by February 2020 in time for the start of next year’s MLS season. In addition to the stadium, the Lockhart site would serve as Inter Miami’s base of operations, main training center, home to a United Soccer League (USL) farm team, and headquarters for a youth soccer academy that would groom the next generation of elite soccer players. The complex would also include team and administrative offices, locker rooms, weight rooms, classrooms, dining facilities, medical and rehabilitation facilities, and practice fields. The Beckham group would bring millions of dollars in public enhancements to the property including the development of a public park, dog park, playground, public multi-purpose fields, and a walking/jogging/fitness trail. The Commission is also committed to building an additional stadium that our local public schools could use for football and other athletic activities.

  • Innovation Village – Stadium Authorization Tuesday, September 18, 2007
Innovation Village – Stadium Authorization Tuesday, September 18, 2007 PROPOSED BOARD ACTION As the next step in developing the previously approved Innovation Village project, the Administration requests that the Board of Trustees adopt a resolution: a) conceptually approving and authorizing the development of an on‐campus steel‐frame football stadium for the Boca Raton campus, with a maximum design and construction cost of $62,000,000 and a projected capacity of up to 30,000 seats; b) authorizing the President to commence formal negotiations with appropriate financial institutions and design and construction professionals, including issuing University Requests for Proposals or Qualifications, as appropriate, to secure the most financially feasible development plan; and c) authorizing the President to take such further actions as are necessary and appropriate to achieve these ends, subject to the Board of Trustees final approval of all financing and construction plans. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Throughout 2006 and 2007, the Administration has developed plans to implement the BOT’s directive to enhance the traditional campus environment on the Boca Raton campus. The ultimate goal is to provide physical and programmatic resources that will support FAU’s efforts to become recognized as a university of first choice. As part of these efforts, the University selected through a Request for Proposal process a development team led by KUD International to create and implement a plan for the Boca Raton campus that would include student residential housing facilities, retail space to serve the university community, and a venue for athletics and cultural events. The RFP required that all financing for the project must be private, with no recourse to University funds.

  • Even 0-6 Start Can't Mar Fact That FAU's New Stadium Is an Absolute Gem by DAVE GEORGE
Commentary: Even 0-6 start can't mar fact that FAU's new stadium is an absolute gem By DAVE GEORGE Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Updated: 6:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011 Posted: 8:56 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 It's finally real, not just some figment of Howard Schnellenberger's astounding imagination, and it rocks. Florida Atlantic's new football stadium, sized just right at 30,000 seats, debuted Saturday afternoon with thousands of students stomping their feet on the aluminum stands in celebration of all the regularly-scheduled tailgate parties that are coming to their campus neighborhood. Altogether, this long-awaited opening was a certified hoot, regardless of another demoralizing loss for the 0-6 Owls, and in spite of the fact that hundreds of customers weren't in their seats by the 4 p.m. kickoff with Western Kentucky because of exasperating clogs at the ticket booths and will-call lines. "Those are good problems to have," FAU Athletic Director Craig Angelos said. "We've never had this many people at an event in Florida Atlantic's history of 50 years. That means a lot of people were interested in coming to see our product. Eventually we got them in by the second quarter and it's all good now." Great news, too, for any who missed this historic opening day and want to catch next Saturday's FAU home game with Middle Tennessee. The stadium promotional staff still has bells and whistles in reserve that were not experienced by the opening-day crowd of 29,103.

  • Saturday, March 14 Marks the Opening of Major League Soccer
Exciting times are coming to Fort Lauderdale! Saturday, March 14 marks the opening of Major League Soccer (MLS) in District 1! At 2:30 p.m., Inter Miami CF will take the field for its inaugural home opener at the brand new, 18,000-seat professional soccer stadium located on the former site of Lockhart Stadium. This new club will harness the city’s great history and unmatched culture to create new traditions, rituals, and symbols that are admired around the world. The historic game will match Inter Miami against the L.A. Galaxy, which happens to be David Beckham’s former team. Beckham played for the Galaxy from 2007 - 2012, leading the club to back-to-back MLS Cup Championships in 2011 and 2012. The opening matchup should prove to be an exciting contest as Inter Miami boasts a host of talented young players led Head Coach Diego Alonso. Inter Miami’s debut marks a major milestone in the public/private partnership between the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Beckham group. Under the agreement, the Beckham group is investing $130 million to transform the 64-acre Lockhart Stadium property into a soccer-centric community destination. In addition to the new soccer stadium, the complex will include a 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art soccer training center and seven professional fields. The facility will be home to Inter Miami’s United Soccer League (USL) team and the Academy. Inter Miami is also rebuilding Lockhart Stadium for Fort Lauderdale High School and Stranahan High School to use as their home field during football season.
