With regard to construction of the Tsubame Series 800 trains, the companies involved encountered many challenges. The following two solutions contributed greatly to overcoming these challenges: 1)The “building up experiences” were used effectively, including the continuous improvements made in technologies, the effective use of knowledge accumulated in departments in the companies other than those directly related to product production, and the contributions of their research laboratories. 2)A flexible production system was established, including the accumulated experiences and knowledge mutually shared by other related departments in the companies, and the manual assembly processes added to the automatic production lines. Special edition paper Preservation and Restoration of Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building Atsushi Hayashi* Isamu Suzuki** Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building is a huge structure—an over 330 m-long and three-story high brick building completed as the central station of Tokyo about 100 years ago. The roof and the inside were burnt down in 1945 during World War II, and it had existed in a temporarily restored form since then. For the purpose of preservation and restoration of the building to its original appearance, an isolation system was adopted. Although the building has a complex location relative to nearby structures, as many as 352 isolators with 158 oil dampers have made it possible to control the shaking of the building. Its railway operations encompass 18 prefectures in the western half of Japan’s Sanyo Shinkansen main island of Honshu and the northern tip of Kyushu, covering a total service area of approximately 104,000 square kilometers. Other Conventional Lines The service area has a population of approximately 43 million people, equivalent to 34% of the population of Japan. The railway network comprises a total of 1,222 railway stations, with an operating route length of 5,015.7 kilometers, almost 20% of passenger railway kilometerage in Japan. This network includes the Sanyo Kansai Urban Area Shinkansen, a high-speed intercity railway line; the Kansai Urban (including the Urban Network) Area, serving the Kyoto–Osaka–Kobe metropolitan area; and other conventional railway lines (excluding the three JR-West branch offices in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe). The Sanyo Shinkansen is a high-speed intercity to the major stations of the Sanyo Shinkansen passenger service between Shin-Osaka Station in Line, such as Okayama, Hiroshima, and Hakata, Osaka and Hakata Station in Fukuoka in northern without changing trains. These services are Kyushu. It is still not clear how far this matter will affect business performance; however, should matters requiring disclosure be identified, you will be notified promptly. February 28, 2018 Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Series N700 Shinkansen Train Bogie Frames With reference to the crack (structural failure) of the bogie (or truck) frame (hereinafter referred to as the “Failed Bogie Frame”) of series N700 Shinkansen train owned by West Japan Railway Company (hereinafter referred as "JR West") occurred at Nagoya Station on 11 December 2017, we, as the manufacturer of the Failed Bogie Frame, hereby express our sincere apology for inconvenience and concern caused to passengers of Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, JR West, Central Japan Railway Company (hereinafter referred to as “JR Central”) and any other related party. While the Japan Transport Safety Board (hereinafter referred to as “JTSB”) is currently conducting dedicated investigations into a root cause of the crack of the Failed Bogie Frame, we hereunder report what has been revealed in the investigation until now and our remedial actions to be taken. 1. Results of the investigation of the Failed Bogie Frame and defects during manufacturing process We manufactured the Failed Bogie Frame in February 2007 at Kawasaki’s Rolling Stock Company Hyogo Works, and the followings have been revealed in the investigation until now. (1) Although the bottom plate of the side frame of the bogie frame of series N700 Shinkansen train should be 8mm thick the design specifications (more than 7mm post-processing), it is 4.7mm at the thinnest location.
