A safer alternative for disinfestation is by heating up grains to a temperature of 50-60 °C. However, this alternative consumes high thermal energy due to the relatively high temperature required to achieve the required goal. Using solar energy as heat source for low temperature applications has become a viable mean for heating applications. Heating of grains using solar energy requires special design of grain storage system as well as development of efficient heat transfer mechanism to increase grain temperature over a limited period of time. The main objective of the current study is to use thermal disinfestation as a non-chemical, safe control method for grain management. A heating system based on solar energy has been developed as heat generator to control stored-grain insects. The target temperature range is 50-60 °C, which is enough to kill most of stored-grain insects. -

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Plant galls are preyed upon by a diverse group of parasitoids and inquilines, which utilize the gall, often at the cost of the gall inducer. This community of insects has been poorly described for most cynipid-induced galls on oaks in North America, despite the diversity of these galls. This study describes the natural history of a common oak apple gall (Andricus quercuscalifornicus [Cynipidae]) and its parasitoid and inquiline commu- nity. We surveyed the abundance and phenology of members of the insect community emerging from 1234 oak apple galls collected in California’s Central Valley and found that composition of the insect community varied with galls of different size, phenology, and location. The gall maker, A. quercuscalifornicus, most often reached maturity in larger galls that developed later in the season. The parasitoid Torymus californicus [Torymidae] was associated with smaller galls, and galls that developed late in the summer. The most common parasitoid, Baryscapus gigas [Eulophidae], was more abundant in galls that developed late in the summer, though the percentage of galls attacked remained constant throughout the season. A lepidopteran inquiline of the gall (Cydia latiferreana [Tortrici- dae] and its hymenopteran parasitoid (Bassus nucicola [Braconidae]) were associated with galls that developed early in the summer. -

Stjepan Krčmar U ovom radu je istražen kvalitativni sastav entomof aune na četiri močvarna staništa od me đunarodnog značenja u Republici Hrvatskoj. To su Park prirode Kopački rit, Park prirode Lonjsko polje, Delta rijeke Neretve i Crna Mlaka. Glavni cilj specijalističkog rada je objediniti sve objavljene i neobjavljene podatke o nalazima vrsta kukaca na ova četiri močvarna staništa te kvalitativno usporediti entomofau nu pomoću Sörensonovog indexa faunističke sličnosti. Na području Parka prirode Kopački rit utvrđeno je ukupno 866 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 84 porodice i 513 rodova. Na području Parka prirode Lonjsko polje utvrđeno je 513 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 24 porodice i 89 rodova. Na području delte rijeke Neretve utvrđeno je ukupno 348 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 89 porodica i 227 rodova. Za područje Crne Mlake nije bilo dostupne literature o nalazima kukaca. Velika vrijednost Sörensonovog indexa od 80,85% ukazuje na veliku faunističku sličnost između faune obada Kopačkoga rita i Lonjskoga polja. Najmanja sličnost u fauni obada utvrđena je između močvarnih staništa Lonjskog polja i delte rijeke Neretve, a iznosi 41,37%. -

SCIREA Journal of Biology http://www.scirea.org/journal/Biology May 17, 2021 Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2021 Behavior and Extra-Oral Digestion of the Wasp Sclerodermus guani (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) Parasitizing Lai Yanxue Forest Pest Control and Quarantine Station of Ningbo City, Ningbo 315000, China Email: [email protected] Abstract: For many decades, the parasitic behavior of wasp Sclerodermus guani (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), a typical generalist gregarious ectoparasitoid, was described as paralyzing the hosts by stinging with venom for egg-laying, and then their offspring larvae after hatching feed on hosts’ hemolymph for the development until emergence. However, this paper reported a new mechanism of the wasp to parasitize the host borer Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Observation on their parasitic behavior and their offspring growth discovered that the wasp needs 6 steps to complete its parasitic process, i.e. host-biting and-fighting, host-subduing and-nursing, host-liquefying and-feeding, wasps’ berried and oviposition, larval sucking and developing, cocooning and wasps’ emerging. Host-biting and host-liquefying are the key steps which would evolve an amazing array of mechanisms to create a liquid nutrient reservoir inside the borer body cavity for the parasitoid larvae’s sucking and developing. This mechanism suggests that S.guani is a species of ectoparasitoid 13 wasp, with the characteristic of extra-oral digestion; the nature of subduing is to fully liquefy the borer internal material and help their offspring smoothly sucking the liquid nutrient from the host for development. Cephalonomia Hyalinipennis (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) and Its Alternative Host, the Stored Product Pest Caulophilus Oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Howard1* and Gabriela Pérez-Lachaud2 Cuticular hydrocarbons of an ectoparasitic wasp attacking two beetle hosts have been identified and examined for the influ- ence of age, gender, mating status, and host on hydrocarbon composition. The 37 wasp hydrocarbons identified consisted of a series of n-alkanes (C16 to C33), 3-, 5-, 9-, 10-, 11-, and 12-methyl alkanes and a series of Z-7 and Z-9 monoenes (C23:1 to C27:1). One C25:2 diene was found. No effects of hydrocarbon composition as a function of age, gender, or mating status were found for the wasps. Wasps reared on Hypothenemus hampei, however, had 12/37 significant abundance differences to those reared on Caulophilus oryzae, although all but one of these differences were for components in less than 2% relative abundance. The C25:2 diene from wasps reared on H. hampei was present in about 10% whereas from wasps reared on C. oryzae it was present in about 2%. The hydrocarbons of one host for this wasp, the coffee berry borer (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), have been previously reported [Howard and Infante, Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 89:700–709 (1996)]. The hydrocarbons of the alternative host, C. oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) consists of n-alkanes (C17 to C31), 3-, 4-, 5-, 7-, 9-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, and 15-methyl alkanes, and a series of dimethyl alkanes of the series 3, 17-; 5, 11-; 5, 17-; 7, 11-; 7, 13-; 13, 17-; and 15, 19-. -
