Executive Summary

Species Survival Plan® for Marbled Teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris)

The current, formally managed population of marbled teals includes 286 birds at 39 AZA institutions (151 males, 116 females, 8 unknown sex) and 2 non-AZA institutions (2 males, 9 females). One AZA institution will be added to the Program as a result of this plan. The Anseriformes Taxon Advisory Group has set the AZA target size for this population to be 250 animals (2012 Regional Collection Plan). Where noted, a larger target size of 300 is used in this plan because of an increased holding capacity among SSP institutions. At present, the Marbled Teal Program qualifies as a Yellow SSP Program. This is a two-year breeding and transfer plan.

Genetic and demographic analyses of a North American studbook (current to 1 April 2018) were performed using PopLink 2.4 and PMx 1.5, resulting in the current breeding and transfer plan for this species.

The pedigree of the breeding population is 0% known, primarily because founding teals entered the population from the private sector and historic pedigree information was not well recorded. Through the incorporation of multiple potential (MULT) parentage and a large number of pedigree assumptions, the pedigree can be increased to 100% known. However, given the nature and extent of the pedigree manipulations standard genetic calculations should be interpreted with caution. The improved pedigree is primarily used to examine known, recent relationships among individuals to avoid breeding birds known to share recent ancestors.

Analyses suggest that 120 hatches are needed over the next two years (60 per year) to maintain the current population size, while 140 hatches are needed over the next two years (70 per year) if a 4.3% growth rate is maintained to grow the population toward the SSP capacity of ~300 birds. The average number of hatches over the past 5 years is 61, which is sufficient to maintain, but not grow the population. The number of pairs recommended is intended to produce sufficient offspring to slightly increase the population size, fill new institutions if recruited, and replace individuals as needed. Recommendations contained in this plan supersede those made by earlier plans.

To continue facilitating genetic management, the following actions are recommended to all institutions:

 Assure that all animals can be individually identified.

This Animal Program is currently a Yellow SSP Program and recommendations proposed are non-binding – Participation is voluntary. Dispositions to non-AZA institutions must comply with each institution's acquisition/disposition policy, in accordance with the AZA policy on Responsible Population Management. Marbled Teal SSP – 2018 Final 1

 Breeding institutions are recommended to record parents of all offspring. If multiple sires or dams are possible, track and report all possible parents to the Studbook Keeper.

 Non-breeding institutions should consider maintaining single-sex exhibit flocks, thus minimizing the production of offspring from non-recommended pairs.

Summary Actions: The SSP recommends 66 females to breed and 96 transfers.

This Animal Program is currently a Yellow SSP Program and recommendations proposed are non-binding – Participation is voluntary. Dispositions to non-AZA institutions must comply with each institution's acquisition/disposition policy, in accordance with the AZA policy on Responsible Population Management. Description of Population Status Species Survival Plan® for Marbled Teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris)

Introduction: The current, formally managed population of marbled teals includes 286 birds at 39 AZA institutions (151 males, 116 females, 8 unknown sex) and 2 non-AZA institutions (2 males, 9 females). This is a two year breeding and transfer plan.

Genetic and demographic analyses of a North American studbook (current to 1 April 2018) were performed using PopLink 2.4 and PMx 1.5, resulting in the current breeding and transfer plan for this species.

Conservation Status: IUCN Red List – Vulnerable (assessed in 2016; current population trend is listed as decreasing); USFWS – Not Listed; CITES – Not Listed

Analytical Population: Multiple potential (MULT) parentage has been extensively documented for a notable portion of the population, as 0% of the pedigree can be traced to wild founders. The PMx software allows MULT parentage to be incorporated into genetic calculations to provide improved estimates of gene diversity and kinship. A number of reasonable pedigree assumptions are made (Appendix A), increasing the pedigree to 100% known. Given that birds have been liberally exchanged among and private breeders since the 1980’s, any unpedigreed birds coming from the private sector are likely related to the formally managed marbled teal population. To facilitate identifying close relationships among living birds and avoid, to the extent possible, breeding birds known to share recent ancestors, some birds from private breeders were assumed full or half- siblings but unrelated to the rest of the population. Although these birds were given WILD/WILD parents they are not considered true founders of the population (Appendix A). Three birds were excluded from genetic analyses because of unknown pedigree or unusual color morph, leaving a total of 283 potential breeders.

Given the nature and extent of the pedigree manipulations standard genetic calculations should be interpreted with caution. However, the improved pedigree was used to examine known, recent relationships among individuals as well as document trends in the estimates of inbreeding and the retention of gene diversity.

Demography: Studbook data indicate that the first marbled teal appeared in North American zoos in 1952. However, the population size remained at less than 20 individuals until 1970, and then began growing in part due to successful zoo and private-sector hatches. The population size has grown steadily since 2004 (Figure 1), with an average growth rate of 4.4% since then. Because of recent successful reproduction and 300 the use of MULT parentage, the projected growth rate of the marbled teal population based on life 250 total tables is very high (63%). The average growth male rate for the past 5 years, however, is 4.3% and a 200 female more realistic growth rate for the population given current institutional capacity. 150

The age structure does not approximate a stable Census 100 age distribution (Figure 2), because annual reproduction has often seen boom and bust 50 cycles. For example, there were 108 hatches in 2015, 127 hatches in 2016, but only 6 hatches in 0 2017. Years of lower reproduction typically result after institutions reach capacity quickly due to Year large clutch sizes. However, based on studbook data, first-year mortality is approximately 40% Figure 1. Census of managed marbled teals in North America from for males and 38% for females (Appendix C). 1954 to 2017, by sex. Thus, the high mortality rate should offset the

large clutch sizes (mean = 5.3). This Animal Program is currently a Yellow SSP Program and recommendations proposed are non-binding – Participation is voluntary. Dispositions to non-AZA institutions must comply with each institution's acquisition/disposition policy, in accordance with the AZA policy on Responsible Population Management. Marbled Teal SSP – 2018 Final 4

16 Based on studbook survival records, if a marbled teal survives to its first birthday, its median life 14 Unknown expectancy is 6.0 years for males and 5.4 years for females (50% of males and females die before Male 12 these ages and 50% die after). More information Female on interpreting the survival statistics can be found 10 on the AZA website (www.aza.org/species- survival-statistics). Males and females are

Age 8 reproductively mature at ~1 year of age. Males 6 have reproduced from 1 to 15 years of age and females from 1 to 11 years. The oldest recorded 4 male and female were 19 and 22, respectively. However, the oldest currently living male is 13 and 2 female is 15 (Appendix C).

0 Analyses suggest that 120 hatches are needed 36 31 26 21 16 11 6 1 4 9 14 19 24 29 34 over the next two years (60 per year) to maintain Number of Individuals the current population size, while 140 hatches are needed over the next two years (70 per year) if a Figure 2. Age distribution of the formally managed population of 4.3% growth rate is maintained to grow the marbled teals in North America. population toward the SSP capacity of ~300 birds. The average number of hatches over the past 5 years is 61 birds. This is sufficient reproduction to maintain the population size, which is close to the current holding capacity.

Genetics: None of the pedigree of the current, living population can be traced back to explicit population founders. However, after incorporating information on MULT parentage and a number of pedigree assumptions, a total of 283 animals in the potential breeding population have pedigrees that are 100% known. The pedigree information that was available for those animals was considered when making breeding and transfer recommendations to identify close relationships and avoid breeding birds known to share recent ancestors.

Given the nature and extent of the pedigree manipulations standard genetic calculations should be interpreted with caution. MULT parentage may particularly artificially inflate the number of founders and the proportion of the population that is reproducing (Ne/N) and any calculation that depends on these statistics. Because of this, long- term genetic projections are not considered meaningful. However, examining population mean kinship and average inbreeding over time are provided to help assess genetic trends. For example, over the past 4 years, the average mean kinship has barely increased, and average inbreeding has decreased substantially.

Management Strategy: The current, formally managed population of marbled teals includes 286 birds (153 males, 125 females, 8 unknown sex) at 39 AZA and 2 non-AZA institutions. Analyses suggest 140 hatches are needed over the next two years (70 per year) if a 4.3% growth rate is maintained to grow the population toward the SSP capacity of ~300 birds. Current reproductive rates indicate that the population size can be maintained or slowly grow if reproductive rates are slightly increased.

The breeding recommendations in this plan are intended to help the population reach these demographic and genetic goals. Pairings are prioritized to avoid inbreeding and to increase the representation of underrepresented lineages.

Careful record keeping can assist even the most basic genetic management and necessitates the cooperation of all participating institutions. The Marbled Teal SSP recommends continuing documentation of parentage or possible parentage in all flocks.

At this time, the SSP Program:

1. Recommends 66 females to breed. Institutions recommended to breed are expected to hold offspring for at least one year.

2. Recommends 96 transfers to meet institutional needs and establish new breeding pairs.

3. Recommends that all breeding institutions track parentage of all offspring. However, if multiple sires or dams are possible parents, report all possible parents to the Studbook Keeper.

4. Recommends determining the sex of all currently unknown sex birds in order to facilitate management of these individuals.

5. Recommends institutions consider holding single-sex flocks.

6. Recommends institutions interested in placing or receiving birds contact the SSP Coordinator.

This Animal Program is currently a Yellow SSP Program and recommendations proposed are non-binding – Participation is voluntary. Dispositions to non-AZA institutions must comply with each institution's acquisition/disposition policy, in accordance with the AZA policy on Responsible Population Management. Explanation of MateRx Analyses

MateRx is analytical software developed jointly by the National Zoological Park and Lincoln Park Zoo. The primary output is a matrix of genetic ratings (Mate Suitability Indices = MSI) for every possible breeding pair in a population. MSIs allow managers to quickly discover how the genetic status of individuals in their collections compares to the rest of a managed population.

Each MSI represents the genetic consequences for the population if a given pair was to produce offspring. There are seven values for MSIs: offspring of pairs rated 1, 2, or 3 would benefit the population’s genetic situation; pairs rated 4, 5, or 6 would be detrimental to the population’s genetic situation. Pairs without an MSI value (i.e., a dash [--]) should not be considered under any circumstances without consulting an advisor. These MSI values are defined as: 1 – very beneficial 2 – moderately beneficial 3 – slightly beneficial 4 – slightly detrimental 5 – moderately detrimental 6 – very detrimental

Whenever possible, managers should encourage pairings with MSIs of 1, 2, or 3 and discourage pairings of 5, 6, or “—“. Pairings with MSIs of 4 are neither encouraged or discouraged and may be necessary in order to meet demographic goals.

MateRx integrates four genetic factors to produce the Mate Suitability Index (MSI). These four components are currently used to develop pairing recommendations for SSPs and PMPs. In decreasing order of “importance,” they are:

1. the expected change in genetic diversity (increase, decrease) that would result if an offspring of a pair is added to the population; 2. the relative rareness or commonness of the parents genetic information (i.e., the relative dissimilarity of parental mean kinships); 3. the inbreeding coefficient of offspring that would be produced by a pair; and 4. the proportion, if any, of the dam and/or sire’s pedigree that is of unknown origin.

The PMC has created an online tutorial to help understand how to use MateRx tables for breeding recommendations. More information can be found on the AZA website at the following link: https://www.aza.org/online-training-modules/.

Analysis Note: The “breakpoint” and “no way” values for inbreeding used 0.066 and 0.125, respectively.

Appendix G Definitions

Management Terms (as of June 2016)

Green Species Survival Plan® (Green SSP) Program – A Green SSP Program has a population size of 50 or more animals and is projected to retain 90% gene diversity for a minimum of 100 years or 10 generations. Green SSP Programs are subject to AZA’s Full Participation and Non–Member Participation Policies.

Yellow Species Survival Plan® (Yellow SSP) Program – A Yellow SSP Program has a population size of 50 or more animals but cannot retain 90% gene diversity for 100 years or 10 generations. Yellow SSP participation by AZA institutions is voluntary.

Red Species Survival Plan® (Red SSP) Program – A Red SSP has a population size of greater than 20 but fewer than 50 animals, at least three AZA member institutions, and a published studbook. Animal Programs that manage species designated as Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered, or Endangered (IUCN) do not need to meet minimum population size and number of participating institution criteria to be designated as an SSP Program. Red Program participation by AZA institutions is voluntary.

Full Participation – AZA policy stating that all AZA accredited institutions and certified related facilities having a Green SSP animal in their collection are required to participate in the collaborative SSP planning process (e.g., provide relevant animal data to the AZA Studbook Keeper, assign an Institutional Representative who will communicate institutional wants and needs to the SSP Coordinator and comment on the draft plan during the 30-day review period, and abide by the recommendations agreed upon in the final plan).

All AZA member institutions and Animal Programs, regardless of management designation, must adhere to the AZA Policy on Responsible Population Management and the AZA Code of Professional Ethics. For more information on AZA policies, see http://www.aza.org/board-policies/.

Demographic Terms

Age Distribution – A two-way classification showing the numbers or percentages of individuals in various age and sex classes.

Ex, Life Expectancy – Average years of further life for an animal in age class x.

Lambda () or Population Growth Rate – The proportional change in population size from one year to the next. Lambda can be based on life-table calculations (the expected lambda) or from observed changes in population size from year to year. A lambda of 1.11 means an 11% per year increase; lambda of 0.97 means a 3% decline in size per year. lx, Age-Specific Survivorship – The probability that a new individual (e.g., age 0) is alive at the beginning of age x. Alternatively, the proportion of individuals which survive from birth to the beginning of a specific age class.

Mean Generation Time (T) – The average time elapsing from reproduction in one generation to the time the next generation reproduces. Also, the average age at which a female (or male) produces offspring. It is not the age of first reproduction. Males and females often have different generation times.

Mx, Fecundity – The average number of same-sexed young born to animals in that age class. Because studbooks typically have relatively small sample sizes, studbook software calculate Mx as 1/2 the average number of young born to animals in that age class. This provides a somewhat less "noisy" estimate of Mx, though it does not allow for unusual sex ratios. The fecundity rates provide information on the age of first, last, and maximum reproduction.

Px, Age-Specific Survival – The probability that an individual of age x survives one-time period; is conditional on an individual being alive at the beginning of the time period. Alternatively, the proportion of individuals which survive from the beginning of one age class to the next.

Qx, Mortality – Probability that an individual of age x dies during time period. Qx = 1-Px. Alternatively, the proportion of individuals that die during an age class. It is calculated from the number of animals that die during an age class divided by the number of animals that were alive at the beginning of the age class (i.e.-"at risk").

This Animal Program is currently a Yellow SSP Program and recommendations proposed are non-binding – Participation is voluntary. Dispositions to non-AZA institutions must comply with each institution's acquisition/disposition policy, in accordance with the AZA policy on Responsible Population Management. Marbled Teal SSP – 2018 Final 47

Risk (Qx or Mx) – The number of individuals that have lived during an age class. The number at risk is used to calculate Mx and Qx by dividing the number of births and deaths that occurred during an age class by the number of animals at risk of dying and reproducing during that age class.

Vx, Reproductive Value – The expected number of offspring produced this year and in future years by an animal of age x.

Genetic Terms

Allele Retention – The probability that a gene present in a founder individual exists in the living, descendant population.

Current Gene Diversity (GD) -- The proportional gene diversity (as a proportion of the source population) is the probability that two alleles from the same locus sampled at random from the population will not be identical by descent. Gene diversity is calculated from allele frequencies, and is the heterozygosity expected in progeny produced by random mating, and if the population were in Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium.

Effective Population Size (Inbreeding Ne) -- The size of a randomly mating population of constant size with equal sex ratio and a Poisson distribution of family sizes that would (a) result in the same mean rate of inbreeding as that observed in the population, or (b) would result in the same rate of random change in gene frequencies (genetic drift) as observed in the population. These two definitions are identical only if the population is demographically stable (because the rate of inbreeding depends on the distribution of alleles in the parental generation, whereas the rate of gene frequency drift is measured in the current generation).

Founder – An individual obtained from a source population (often the wild) that has no known relationship to any individuals in the derived population (except for its own descendants).

Founder Genome Equivalents (FGE) – The number wild-caught individuals (founders) that would produce the same amount of gene diversity as does the population under study. The gene diversity of a population is 1 - 1 / (2 * FGE).

Founder Representation -- Proportion of the genes in the living, descendant population that are derived from that founder.

Inbreeding Coefficient (F) -- Probability that the two alleles at a genetic locus are identical by descent from an ancestor common to both parents. The mean inbreeding coefficient of a population will be the proportional decrease in observed heterozygosity relative to the expected heterozygosity of the founder population.

Mean Kinship (MK) – The mean kinship coefficient between an animal and all animals (including itself) in the living, captive-born population. The mean kinship of a population is equal to the proportional loss of gene diversity of the descendant (captive-born) population relative to the founders and is also the mean inbreeding coefficient of progeny produced by random mating. Mean kinship is also the reciprocal of two times the founder genome equivalents: MK = 1 / (2 * FGE). MK = 1 - GD.

Percent Known – Percent of an animal's genome that is traceable to known founders. Thus, if an animal has an UNK sire, the % Known = 50. If it has an UNK grandparent, % Known = 75.

Percent Certain -- The percentage of the living individuals’ pedigree that can be completely identified as certain: (exact identity of both parents is known) and traceable back to known founders. Individuals that are 100% certain do not have any MULTs or UNKs in their pedigree. Certainty represents a higher degree of knowledge than Known and therefore is always less than or equal to Known.

Prob Lost – Probability that a random allele from the individual will be lost from the population in the next generation, because neither this individual nor any of its relatives pass on the allele to an offspring. Assumes that each individual will produce a number of future offspring equal to its reproductive value, Vx.
