magazine |21 Stafell Fyw is a monthly bilingual night that started back in January of this year. Run jointly by ‘Siarc Marw’ a fanzine based in Cardiff and ‘Cymdeithas yr Iaith’, the Society. ‘By mixing Welsh and non-Welsh-speaking bands, the night offers the opportunity to showcase Welsh-language music to audiences that might never hear it and vice versa. We caught up with the lovely Mair to get the full lowdown and to keep in the spirit of things she very kindly agreed to answer our questions in both Welsh and English.

247: Is there any particularly strong sound that is coming from South Wales at the moment? M: Broadly speaking, I’d say folk. There’s lots of emos frolicking about too… I don’t really listen to the latter, but I like a bit of folk. The influence of bands like Gorky’s is still pretty strong, and then you’ve got laid back festivals like the Green Man. That and our earth- loving druidic heritage, obviously!

247: Which artists have you had play for you in the past? M: Off the top of my head we’ve had Derwyddon Dr. Gonzo, Cate Le Bon, Sweet Baboo, Lleuwen, Eitha Tal Ffranco, Silver Spurs, Heather Jones, Ruby Samba, Radio Luxembourg, Howl Griff, Bob and a few more…

Glos-tonbury was their way of giving those bands that weren’t playing a gig and also gave those who didn’t fancy the mud, a weekend shindig. They managed to get a road closure for Cambridge Road (the road alongside the Lion) so decided to build a half pipe and invite as many skaters down to skate it as possible, in addition Keith Hopewell invited as many of the top Bristol thanks to James Dunn Photography: Telbert James (www.telbert.blogspot.com [email protected]) graffiti artists down to do some live pieces. Artists involved included Dicey, Mr Jago, Cheo, Seza, FLX, Lokey, Sepr, China Mike, RichT, Hine and SP. They did us all a favour and put on a BBQ selling Murray’s burgers (best in Bristol) and had a number of stalls including cups cakes, jewelry, bags, and clothing from Avalaan and Butchi & Gos Mos. The whole event was organised by James from the Golden Lion with a whole lot of help from his staff. This was such a tidy day out, nice tunes, top burgers, skaters, artists, cold beer, and nice peeps. Luckily they will be doing it again next year.
