Page 6 Christmas in Lebanon It’s no surprise Lebanon is commonly nicknamed the “Pearl of the Middle East.” Although the country is smaller than the state of Connecticut, 4.4 million religiously diverse people call Lebanon home. The Lebanese Constitution acknowledges 18 religious sects, including Lebanese-Christians, who make up more than 30% of the total population. But what makes Lebanon stand out from other Middle Eastern countries is the celebration and embracement of the Christmas holiday by all of Lebanon’s sects. “Christmas is uniting all the religions together, because Christmas is Community Events mentioned in the Bible and the Quran. Continued on Page 4 Justice David Viviano honored by LACOM (Page 2) Majida El Roumi to release Christmas Album (Page 3) Our Lebanese-American of the Month (Page 4) Christmas Edition December 2013 Justice David Viviano honored with LACOM’s 17th Annual Trailblazer Award The Lebanese-American Club of Michigan honored Michigan Supreme Court Justice David Viviano with the 17th Annual Trailblazer Award at a festive gala at St. Sharbel’s Banquet and Conference Center on November 23rd. Part of the evening’s proceeds was donated to the Centre Mar Semaan Orphanage in Lebanon. The orphanage cares for Lebanese orphaned children coming from deprived households. DTE Energy, the Law Offices of Joumana Kayrouz, G-Tech Services, Oakland University School of Engineering and Computer Science, and Brite Dental Care sponsored the event. See photos on Page 5. RECIPE CORNER Riz B Haleeb Ingredients 4 cups of milk 10-12 teaspoons of sugar (to taste) ½ cup of rice 2-4 Table Spoons of corn flour 2 teaspoons of orange blossom water Pistachio as a garnish Instructions 1. Rinse the rice then let dry 2. Boil the milk with the sugar and rice on low heat for 15 minutes or until the rice softens all while stirring continuously. 3. As the rice softens add the orange blossom water and the corn flour and stir it in and boil/stir for another 5 minutes or until the pudding hardens and gains the consistency of yogurt. If you add too much corn flour the pudding becomes too jello-like and if you add little it’ll take on a more watery consistency. This is a personal preference. Try adding 2 first then increase if you need to. 4. As the pudding hardens, pour it in your heat-resistant serving cups/plates and let rest for a few minutes before garnishing with pistachio and refrigerating. 5. Featuring a recital at a Lebanese church, a new album is on its way from the Lebanese singer that’s sure to get us in the spirit of the season. All proceeds from the Christmas album set to release on December 10 will go towards different charities throughout Lebanon. According to the Middle East news portal Elaph, the album is a production of Majida personally. Elie Saab creates new fashion degree at LAU Elie Saab is on a mission to bring world-class fashion design to Lebanon. In order to make this happen, the Lebanese fashion designer has teamed up with the London College of Fashion to create a new fashion degree - Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design in collaboration with Elie Saab - at the Lebanese American University, which has a campus in Beirut and another in Byblos. "The vision behind LAU's fashion design program was to offer the region's students an education of the highest possible international standards without having to travel too far from home," said Saab, who is honorary chairman of the new program. Lebanese-American of the Month Helen Thomas was born in Winchester, Kentucky to Lebanese immigrants George and Mary (Rowady) Thomas on August 4, 1920. Raised in Detroit, Thomas studied English at Wayne University, which did not offer a degree in journalism at the time. Breaking grounds as a pioneering female reporter, Thomas joined United Press in 1943 and reportedly earned $24 a week. In 1960, Thomas began covering President-elect John F. Kennedy and was known as the “First Lady of the Press.” Thomas’ questions were outspoken, blunt, demanding, and forceful. Her style of reporting was admired and respected by journalists around the world. Thomas died on July 20, 2013.
