The grounds are no less impressive, with an ancient rookery, tilting ground and pleasure garden. The Hall courtyard. All date from the time of Mary Fitton, Dark Lady of Shakespeare’s sonnets, and maid of honour to Queen Elizabeth I, whose family lived here and spent vast sums of money in the hope of procuring Timothy and Elizabeth Richards, a visit from the monarch. It was not to be, with Mary threatened owners of Gawsworth Hall. with the Tower after becoming pregnant by the Earl of Pembroke. Then as now, the pretty gardens are enclosed by a mile-long Tudor wall, St. James the Great church, and a series of five scenic lakes. Adults £7.50, Children under 16 £3.50 GARDEN THEATRE Season runs: 30 June to 21 August It’s 46 years since the theatre began, with a Shakespeare play in the Tilting ground. And in the decades since, the summer performances have become a huge part of the Gawsworth calendar, moving to the Hall’s sunken lawn, with the beautiful backdrop of the Tudor courtyard and the audience sitting in a covered grandstand. Tickets from £15 CLASSIC CAR SHOW Monday 2 May, 10am–4.30pm An annual event since 1998, our May Day show takes place within the walled Elizabethan pleasure gardens. One of the most popular rallies in the north west, it attracts an eclectic mix of classic cars and motorcycles from the past century, as well as interesting modern vehicles. The current show includes a display, autojumble and informal concours. Adults £10, Children under 16 £2.50 YOUNGTIMER CLASSIC CAR SHOW Monday 30 May, 10am–4.30pm An all-new show concentrating on more recent classic cars and motorcycles in production between 1970 and 1990. Inspired by the Youngtimer movement that’s popular in Europe, the day takes the form of a display, light entertainment and informal concours in the Hall grounds. Supported by Carole Nash Insurance. Adults £5, Children under 16 £2.50 YULETIDE WITH CRAIG BULLOCK Saturday 10 December to Thursday 15 December, 10.30am–5pm (Evening opening, Monday 12 December, 6.30–8.30pm) The highly acclaimed international floral designer Craig Bullock will be returning to the Hall, having been passed the Christmas baton by Barry Grey! Well known for his bright, bold colours and fabulous atmospheric arrangements, this event is the perfect festive warm-up. A comedy classic, it’s been revived via numerous hit runs 30 JUNE–21 AUGUST over the years, most recently starring Kara Tointon and Felicity Kendal in the West End, and it features all the Scarborough playwright’s myriad of ingenious, and often very silly, twists and turns. Britain’s most Greg has not long known glamorous Ginny. But he’s already sure she is the one. When Ginny announces beautiful garden she’s going to see her parents, he decides to surprise theatre her after finding a copy of the address. And what better time to ask the father for her hand in marriage? The five-piece swept to victory on the hugely popular ITV show in June 2014, winning a £250,000 cash prize as well as a much-coveted slot on The Royal Variety Show. They signed with Simon Cowell’s Syco Music and their career has gone from strength to strength. Their debut album Stars smashed in to the No.1 spot beating Ed Sheeran in the process, while last summer’s Act Two was only kept off the top spot by Florence & The Machine. In under two years the band have gone from being completely unknown to selling over 360,000 albums, making them platinum album recording artists. In 2015 they completed a sell out 32-date UK tour, while this year will see the band play prestigious venues such as The Royal Albert Hall. Faithfully recreating the legendary band’s Rumours line-up (still the fifth best-selling album of all time) this two-hour live show also features huge hits from the Peter Green days, and Stevie Nicks’ solo career. The first half of this superb evening will feature the finest compositions from the world of film and musical theatre – Tickets: Adults £17.50, Children £10 Wednesday 13 July, 7.30pm MICHAEL PORTILLO Life: A Game of Two Halves Returning to Gawsworth after yet more railway adventures, there are few more engaging public speakers than the politician turned television documentary maker. In a Westminster career spanning 21 years, Michael Portillo first took his seat in parliament in 1984, and was subsequently minister for Transport, Employment, and Defence. His memorable career in the House also took in a leadership contest and a dramatic election defeat at Enfield Southgate in 1997. He left the House of Commons in 2005 (after serving as MP for Kensington and Chelsea) and has since re-invented himself as a steam engine loving all-round good chap. After the huge success of the BBC’s Great British Railway Journeys, he again picked up his Bradshaw’s guide to tour Europe, before travelling to the United States for this year’s Great American Railroad series.
