From the President—Marjie Siekerka

First, I would like to thank the 2013 board and President Waskah Whelan for an amazing job in service to NCRWF. If you did not know, Waskah was voted in unanimously as President of SDCFRW during the convention here in San Diego. Don’t worry we will not be losing Waskah, we will be gaining more insight. Waskah will still be in charge of Campaigns and Precincts for us, and she will be attending our meetings! Speaking about Campaigns, we have an important elec- tion coming up on February 11th, the same day as our meeting, for the Mayor of San Diego. As you know, Kevin Faulconer is the Republican endorsed candidate, and he

needs your help. He won the primary easily against 3 Democrats, but, they are

pooling their resources against him. Per Jason Roe, the Republicans comprise only

: 27% of the registered voters in the City of San Diego. The last poll Mr. Faulconer had drawn even in the race against David Alvarez, the Democrats’ candidate. Alva- rez has also raised $1 million more than Falconer! We need to help get out the vote if we don’t want the newly elected mayor to keep with the radical poli- cies of the left. To volunteer please call: 858-450-4600. NCRWF has some grand plans for 2014 including dynamic speakers, an anoth-

Cold Hard Facts It may be summer in Antarctica, but a group of scientists on a global warming expedition were dealt an ironic twist after their ship became stranded due to exceptionally thick sea ice. Several ships were forced to avert rescue attempts after also running into adverse conditions. A helicopter was finally deployed in a last-ditch effort to pick up the 52 pas- sengers stranded for 10 days. All this embarrassment could have been avoided if the crew had simply looked at the cold hard facts: Antarctica continues to mount record after record for sea ice expansion, and the globe is cooling – a development not projected by climate models. But environ- mental alarmists don’t hinge their efforts on facts.

ObamaCare: Some Things Never Change

It seems that 2014 will be the same as 2013 in at least one respect: The Obama White House will keep lying to us, particularly about its crowning “achievement,” ObamaCare. Health and Human Ser- vices Secretary Kathleen Sebelius claimed on Tuesday that, as of Dec. 28, “2.1 million people have enrolled in a private insurance plan” via ObamaCare. Recall, however, that one is not “enrolled” until the first premium is paid, and the administration refused to provide figures on how many people made it through the Healthcare.gov gauntlet and managed to pay their premium. According to The Wall Street Journal, “As of Monday, however, only about half of enrollees billed for plans offered by more than 100 insurers in 17 states had paid their first month’s premium.” The dead- line for paying those premiums has been extended, in some cases as late as Jan. 31. Moreover, even if 2.1 million are enrolled, that doesn’t outweigh the five million policies that have been cancelled because of ObamaCare. That isn’t to say that three million people are without insur- ance; many of those five million rolled into other policies. But it also doesn’t diminish the size of Obama’s BIG lie that “if you like your plan, you can keep your plan.” Undaunted, the White House spun it this way in an email this week: “Americans across the country have new health insurance that starts today, thanks to the Affordable Care Act.” That’s because they lost their old insurance because of the “Affordable” Care Act! No wonder the chief operating officer of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is retiring. In the end, however, the problem for Democrats isn’t the failed website rollout or even the mass number of cancellations; it’s the fact that, from here forward, every American suffering anything from a hang nail to a heart attack will blame Democrats for wantonly destroying the health care sys- tem.

Page 6 NAVAJO CANYON NEWS Stop the Bailout – Now (Charles KrautHammer)

First order of business for the returning Congress: The No Bailout for Insurance Companies Act of 2014. Make it one line long: “Sections 1341 and 1342 of the Affordable Care Act are hereby re- pealed.” End of bill. End of bailout. End of story. Why do we need it? On Dec. 18, the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers was asked what was the administration's Plan B if, because of adverse selection (enrolling too few young and healthies), the insurance companies face financial difficulty. Jason Furman wouldn't bite. “There's a Plan A,” he replied. Enroll the young. But of course there's a Plan B. It's a government bailout. Administration officials can't say it for political reasons. And they don't have to say it because it's already in the Affordable Care Act, buried deep. First, Section 1341, the “reinsurance” fund collect- ed from insurers and self-insuring employers at a nifty $63 a head. (Who do you think the cost is passed on to?) This yields about $20 billion over 3 years to cover losses. Then there is Section 1342, the “risk corridor” provision that mandates a major taxpayer payout covering up to 80% of insurance-company losses. Never heard of these? That's the beauty of passing a bill of such monstrous length. You can insert a chicken soup recipe and no one will notice. Nancy Pelosi was right: We'd have to pass the damn thing to know what's in it. Well, now we have and now we know. The whole scheme was risky enough to begin with – getting enough enrollees and making sure 40% are young and healthy. Obamacare is already far behind its own enrollment estimates. But things have gotten worse. The administration has been changing the rules repeatedly – with every scrim- mage-line audible raising costs and diminishing revenue. First, it postponed the employer mandate. Then, it exempted from the individual mandate people whose policies were canceled (by Obamacare). And for those who did join the exchanges, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is “strongly encouraging” insurers to – during the “transition” – cover doctors and drugs not included in their clients' plans. The insurers were stunned. Told to give free coverage. Deprived of their best customers. Forced to offer stripped-down “catastrophic” plans to over-30 clients (contrary to the law). These dictates, complained their spokesman, could “destabilize” the insurance market. Translation: How are we going to survive this? Shrinking revenues and rising costs could bring on the “death spiral” – an unbalanced patient pool forcing huge premium increases (to restore reve- nue) that would further unbalance the patient pool as the young and healthy drop out. End result? Insolvency – before which the insurance companies will pull out of Obamacare. Solution? A huge government bailout. It's Obamacare's escape hatch. And – surprise, surprise – it's already baked into the law. (Continued on Page 8)

A DIAMOND AWARD WINN ER Page 7 (Stop the Bailout—Continued from Page 7) Which is why the GOP needs to act. Obamacare is a Rube Goldberg machine with hundreds of moving parts. Without viable insurance companies doing the work, it falls apart. No bailout, no Obamacare. Such a bill would be overwhelmingly popular because Americans hate fat-cat bailouts of any kind. Why should their tax dollars be spent not only saving giant insurers but also rescuing this unworkable, unbalanced, unstable, unpopular money-pit of a health care scheme? The GOP House should pass it and send it to Harry Reid's Democratic Senate. Democrats know it could be fatal for Obamacare. The only alternative would be single-payer. And try selling that to the country after the spectacularly incompetent launch of – and subsequent widespread disaffection with – mere semi-nationalization. Do you really think vulnerable Democrats up for re-election will vote for a bailout? And who better to slay Obamacare than a Democratic Senate – liberalism repudiating its most important creation of the last 50 years. Want to be even bolder? Attach the anti-bailout bill to the debt ceiling. That and nothing else. Dare the president to stand up and say: “I'm willing to let the country default in order to preserve a massive bailout for insurance companies.” In the past, Republicans made unrealistic and unpopular debt- ceiling demands – and lost badly. They learned their lesson. Last year, Republicans presented one sim- ple unassailable debt-ceiling demand – that the Senate pass its first budget in 4 years. Who could ar- gue with that? The Senate capitulated within two days. Who can argue with no bailout? Let the Senate Democrats decide – support the bailout and lose the Senate. Or oppose the bailout and bury Obamacare.

There’s only one way to fix this and it comes in the next two elections.”

Convicts Vote Democrat According to a new study in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, most convicted criminals register as Democrats. In fact, Breitbart reports, “The study found that felons regis- tered Democratic over Republican by a six-to-one margin in some states, including New York, where 61.5% are Democrats and only 9% GOP. Another fact discovered was that 73% of the felons who would vote would vote Democrat.” They add, “The study said there are 5.8 million eligible voters in jail,” the majority of which are young black males. There’s one thing the Left can always count on: support from criminals. Because pickpockets have to stick together.

Thirteen Tax Hikes in 2013 Now that 2013 is history, here’s a recap of some of the taxes that went up last year: Payroll tax (from 4.2% to 6.2%); payroll taxes on those earning more than $250,000 rose another 0.9% on top of the oth- er rate increase; top marginal rate (from 35% to 39.6%); personal exemptions began phasing out for couples earning more than $300,000; ditto for itemized deductions; capital gains and dividends tax in- creased from 15% to 20%; the death tax on estates larger than $5 million rose from 35% to 40%; taxes on business investment increased; the ObamaCare surtax of 3.8% kicked in for those earning more than $250,000 per year; medical device manufacturers now pay 2.3% excise tax on their products; the deduc- tion for medical expenses was reduced; the corporate deduction for Medicare Part D subsidy expenses was eliminated; and health benefits deductions for corporate executives were limited.

DNC’s Fake ‘Impeachment’ Scare The DNC emailed supporters just after the Winter Solstice to rustle up some year-end cash. The “urgent” message? Don’t let Republicans impeach Barack Obama! Given that such an event is less likely than Al Gore renouncing his climate alarmism, we say to conservatives: Don’t bite on this hoax. The DNC’s message is a bait-and-switch attempt to change the subject from the Obama/Democrat epic FAILS this year to “impeachment.” Any political capital devoted to any such effort will go down the same rat hole as all the capital wasted on the “birth certificate” charade.
