C'est l'illustration de l'importance accordée à un phénomène relativement méconnu ou qui s'appliquait à des situations relativement limitées et dont on découvre aujourd'hui qu'il n'est quasiment plus rien qui n'en relève. Ne faut-il pas voir dans cette situation le signe même qu'Internet et les réseaux sont devenus le champ permanent de toutes les rencontres possibles, d'autant plus que nous nous sommes rencontrés, Vincent Paul Toccoli et moi, à l'occasion de cette démarche partagée. Cette complexité, dans son domaine de relevance, rejoint structurellement et significativement, - même si analogiquement -, la complexité d’Internet, et pose les mêmes questions fondamentales que lui (et que pose aussi la globalisation de l’économie) : questions que ne peuvent comprendre - ni même imaginer -, ceux qui ne connaissent d’autre considération que la loi écrite, Civile ou Canonique, la tradition, et bagatellisent les interactions de plus en plus subtiles que tissent entre eux les phénomènes humains les plus ordinaires ( peut-être simplement parce qu’ils n’en ont aucune idée, ayant été nourris au dogme, au passé et à la loi du plus fort)".

It carefully considers the internal dynamics of anti-junta activism in Canada’s Greek populations, but it also contemplates the meanings of external perceptions, particularly from the Canadian state and Canadian public discourse. The study acknowledges the dominant paradigm of Greek immigrants as unskilled workers, however, it demonstrates that this archetype is not monolithic. In many ways, it is challenged by a small number of Greeks who possessed skills to write letters to politicians, create petitions, organize public rallies, and politically mobilize others. At the same time, this dissertation carefully considers Canada’s social and political environment and shows how uniquely Canadian politics ran parallel to and informed Greek homeland politics. Transnationalism is used as an analytical tool, which challenges the meaning of local/national borders and the perception that they are sealed containers. The main argument expressed here is that environments shape movements and migrant political culture does not develop in a vacuum. Each chapter deals with specific nuances of anti-junta activism in Toronto and Montreal. Chapter One examines the organized voices of the Greek community’s anti-dictatorship movement. The chapter’s latter section looks at how the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK), led by Andreas Papandreou, consolidated itself as the main mouthpiece against Greece’s authoritarian regime.

    Agonism and Junta: Greece’s Late Bourgeois Contribution to Public Sphere Discourse Barbara Syrrakos New School for Social Research Department of Political Science New York, NY [email protected] Paper presented at the 3rd Ph.D. Symposium of the Hellenic Observatory of the London School for Economics and Political Science June 14-15, 2007 Do not cite without author’s permission PART I: INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to suggest a model of the public sphere under conditions of dictatorship. I build on three pre-existing models: Jurgen Habermas' theory of the public sphere, Nancy Fraser's conception of multiple publics in response to the Habermas model, and finally Hannah Arendt's conception of the agonistic public sphere by way of the ancients.1 In this introduction, I begin with a hypothetical portrait of democratic participation. I then move on to discuss the Habermasean perspective of the public sphere and Nancy Fraser's multiple publics critique. This will be followed by a discussion of Arendt's classical-based portrait of the public sphere, for descriptive purposes, with a focus on agonism. I will then present the historical case of Greece, as an empirical illustration of the hypothetical, as interpreted through the lenses of Habermas and Arendt and offer up a model of the public sphere, consequently, with distinct traits that will allow us to perceive of a departure from the presumptions imposed by normative accounts of public sphere in a non-authoritarian political environment. A SYNOPSIS In 2015, Greece has already gone through the fifth year from the beginning of the implementation of the memorandum. The unstable economic and social situation (178.6% GDP debt for 2014) 1led to the rise and fall of five governmental schemes within six years. So, after 5 years of austerity, at September of 2015, the left party ΣΥΡΙΖΑ (Coalition of Radical Left), made a new governmental coalition with the right party of ΑΝΕΛ (Independent Greeks) for 2nd time at the same year (the first one was at January of the same year, but fallen after the decision to sign a 3rd memorandum at July of 2015). 1 According Eurostat’s General government gross debt - annual data (http:// ec.europa.eu/eurostat/tgm/table.do? tab=table&init=1&language=en&pcode=teina225&plugin=1) 1 Unfortunately, the moment that article was written, we still donʼt know which will be the luck of this coalition. Abstract Abstract This thesis examines the political speeches of the Greek dictator Georgios Papadopoulos from the time his regime—the self-titled ‘Revolution of the 21st April’—usurped power in 1967 until he himself was ousted in November 1973. The thesis proposes that the underlying aim of all of Papadopoulos’s political speeches is the construction of a cyclical narrative of a past, present and future Greece. According to his political speeches, this construct proposes a ‘dangerous’, ‘corrupt’ and ‘undemocratic’ recent past that necessitated his ‘Revolutionary’ present; a ‘revolutionary’ present that strives to create the preconditions for a ‘prosperous’ future Greece; and a future Greece that shall embody the ‘Helleno-Christian’ ideals of the distant past, and detach itself from the failings of the recent past. The premise on which the research is founded is that patterns in his political speeches can be quantitatively identified and that, from these patterns, a qualitative interpretation can be developed. Thus, quantitative data were collated concerning the frequency of key terms and concepts, both literal and figurative, in all of Papadopoulos’s political speeches and, then, cross-referenced with audience composition and date of delivery. These data were subsequently analysed holistically in the context of the political, social, economic and cultural aspects of Greece’s recent history. The thesis developed from the data is divided into three parts.
